Less than a day after Trump named Kash Patel as his choice for FBI director, a former federal law enforcement official asked me a question: "curious if I'm on that list?" His definition of the 'deep state' appears to include the organization he hopes to lead. “One of the most cunning and powerful arms of the Deep State is the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” he wrote. “I have received calls from lifers who are putting in their papers,” said the former FBI official, who asked not to be named, citing fears of retaliation. Ultimately, he will fire the Attorney General and the FBI Director or force them out if they don’t do what he wants.”

CNN —After a chaotic week in which House Speaker Mike Johnson found himself at odds, at different times, with President-elect Donald Trump, hardline conservatives and minority Democrats, he returned to a similar joke. However, Collins noted that Johnson — who won the gavel after conservatives’ ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy kicked off weeks of chaos in 2023 — retains Trump’s support. Finally, on Friday — with six hours to spare before the government funding deadline — Johnson and the House GOP punted. The House approved a three-month spending bill that included $110 billion for disaster relief and a one-year extension of the farm bill. Some House Republicans who opposed the year-end funding bill on Friday were noncommittal on whether they’d support him.

Welcome to the online version of From the Politics Desk, an evening newsletter that brings you the NBC News Politics team’s latest reporting and analysis from the White House, Capitol Hill and the campaign trail. Plus, senior White House reporter Pete Nicholas files a dispatch from a conference of conservative activists in Phoenix. The vote was 366-34, capping a tumultuous week in the House that foreshadowed how the new Congress in January might deal with Donald Trump back in the White House. “I’ve talked to President Trump, in detail, and he knows exactly what we’re doing,” the speaker said. “We don’t need partisanship now; we need hyperpartisanship now,” Steve Bannon, a former Trump White House senior adviser, told a raucous audience gathered at the Phoenix Convention Center for AmericaFest.

Elon Musk has been a constant companion to President-elect Donald Trump as Trump meets with foreign leaders — an ever-present personality at Mar-a-Lago since November, even accompanying Trump to Paris on his first foreign trip since winning the election. Musk’s interactions with world leaders alongside Trump are raising questions about the tech leader’s potential influence on U.S. foreign policy over the next four years and the potential for conflicts of interest, Washington insiders say. Since 2014, Trump has traveled to China at least eight times where he had meetings with senior Chinese officials. Asked about Musk’s influence on foreign policy, a former U.S. intelligence official told NBC News: “I’m more concerned about conflicts of interest. Musk has previously expressed an interest in affecting the trajectory of foreign affairs, which could further affect his dealings with world leaders.

Like other countries, India has been targeted by Trump, who called New Delhi a “very big abuser” of the bilateral trading relationship during a campaign event in September. “Having Trump breathing down BRICS’ neck saying, ‘don’t go down that road,’ gives India more space to maneuver,” Pant added. Even though Republicans will control the White House, the House and the Senate, they’ll again need Democratic votes to stop a shutdown in less than three months. In addition, Trump’s demand that Congress extend or abolish the debt ceiling to take it off his plate next year failed dramatically. On Friday, 170 House Republicans defied him and did just that. A day after Speaker Mike Johnson released an initial bipartisan deal, Trump and his billionaire confidant Elon Musk blew it up. Van Orden's fellow Wisconsinite, Sen. WASHINGTON — The Democratic-led Senate confirmed the 235th federal judge nominated by President Joe Biden, marking a milestone for the outgoing occupant of the White House by giving him one more than former President Donald Trump secured. The latest confirmation Friday could be Biden's last, meaning he will leave office having secured one Supreme Court justice, 45 appeals court judges, 187 district court judges and two judges on the U.S. Court of International Trade. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer heralded the vote as “historic” as the gavel fell to some applause in the Senate chamber. “The majority has now confirmed more judges under President Biden than any majority has confirmed in decades. “These men and women have the power to uphold basic rights or to roll them back,” the White House said in a fact sheet.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a meagdonor and adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, is now seeking to influence Germany's election, posting an endorsement on X of the country's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. In a post Thursday night, Musk wrote, "Only the AfD can save Germany." In a post on X, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called Musk an "out of touch billionaire running the incoming Trump Administration" who "enthusiastically supports the neo-Nazi party in Germany." On Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, a center-left Social Democrat, dismissed Musk's claim that only the far-right party can "save Germany." Many cheered Trump's election, which Musk helped finance through $277 million in contributions to the campaign and related Republican causes.

The court unanimously ruled that prison officials were liable for Eighth Amendment violations only if they acted with "deliberate indifference" to a prisoner's suffering. "And when this is true of prison officials, no constitutional liability may lie, however 'soul-chilling' the conditions." As long as prison officials assert that they didn't know about the risk, he said, a federal court will rarely find an Eighth Amendment violation. Prison officials weren't aware of the altercation, according to an incident report, until Hodges' then-fiancée called the prison, concerned about his safety. She disagreed with how her colleagues assessed the question of mindset, writing that a committee finding alone should not release prison officials from liability.

House lawmakers voted on Friday to avoid a government shutdown, passing a government funding bill with just hours to spare before the midnight deadline. House Democrats provided significant cover for House Speaker Mike Johnson, who lost 34 Republicans on the measure. While federal agencies have already begun shutdown planning, there is some wiggle room if funding lapses for only a few hours. Trump then urged Republicans to pass a pared-down funding bill and an extension of the debt ceiling. On Thursday night, 38 House Republicans and nearly every House Democrat voted against that plan, raising the stakes as a shutdown approached.

The cost of living crisis in the US has eased somewhat, but low-income Americans are still struggling after years of high inflation and elevated interest rates. “Lower-income households are always going to be the ones that feel the brunt of high inflation and high interest rates,” said Elizabeth Renter, senior economist at NerdWallet. CNN —A top Senate Democrat on Saturday accused conservative Supreme Court justices of violating federal disclosure laws in a lengthy report that caps a monthslong investigation by the Senate Judiciary Committee and comes weeks before Republicans take control of the chamber. Both Thomas and Alito have cited the “personal hospitality” exemption from annual reporting requirements, which they said relieved them of any obligation to report the trips. In response to the outcry over the Thomas trips, the Supreme Court adopted its first-ever code of conduct a year ago, but the document quickly faced criticism because it includes no enforcement mechanism. Durbin’s report also recounts a scandal this year involving two controversial flags – including an upside-down US flag – hoisted over properties that Alito owns. Republicans, including Trump, have defended Thomas and Alito and have accused Democrats of trying to delegitimize the court’s conservative majority by focusing on ethics.

“It’s like crying wolf over and over again,” said Bobbi Scopa, with Grassroots Wildland Firefighters, an advocacy organization. Some 11,200 federal firefighters received a salary boost in 2021 of either $20,000 or 50% of their base pay under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Federal firefighters undergo rigorous training that is a step above what private, state and local crews teach. “Yet, federal wildland firefighters are frequently subjected to inconsistent compensation despite their essential role in protecting lives, communities, and wildlife. “It’s just unacceptable.”Frustrated by ongoing problems, federal firefighters have continued to leave the U.S. Forest Service for higher wages at state and local departments.

CNN —The House voted on Friday to pass a stopgap funding bill in a bid to avert a shutdown just hours before a midnight deadline. The Senate must take up the bill next before it can be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. Democrats supported the stopgap bill that came to a vote on Friday after Republicans dropped the debt limit provisions that Trump had pushed for. The House vote was 366 to 34. The bill will fund the government through March 14, 2025, and includes roughly $100 billion in disaster relief, as well as a farm bill extension.

President-elect Donald Trump has called on Congress to raise or eliminate the debt ceiling. Going over the debt ceiling could lead to a default and deep recession. The debt ceiling is the unexpected debate in Washington this week after President-elect Donald Trump threw the annual holiday-season government funding talks into disarray. "Congress must get rid of, or extend out to, perhaps, 2029, the ridiculous Debt Ceiling," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Friday. A debt ceiling breach has become a political tool — one that Trump is trying to wield for the last timeThe debt ceiling limits the amount of money the federal government is allowed to borrow to pay for its programs and operations.

WASHINGTON — Just days before the height of the holiday season, a government shutdown could throw hundreds of thousands of federal workers into the lurch by putting future paychecks in jeopardy. Federal employees’ paychecks for their work from earlier in December would not be delayed, according to guidance from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Federal employees who were furloughed or required to work will be paid retroactively, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, federal contractors often do not receive back pay. In order to pass the full House before the midnight shutdown deadline, however, the bill, released late Friday afternoon, will require significant Democratic support. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he was committed to avoiding a shutdown that could jeopardize paychecks for hundreds of thousands of federal employees a few days before Christmas. "We will not have a government shutdown," Johnson told reporters in the Capitol Friday afternoon. It was not clear how Democrats, led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., would react to the standalone bill. James Clyburn, D-S.C., a longtime party leader, on MSNBC's "Deadline White House."

Restrictions on gender-affirming care proposed by Republicans in Congress and President-elect Donald Trump could be devastating for transgender youths, doctors say, especially for teens with eating disorders. Taking the hormones estrogen or testosterone, which many trans teens eventually receive, restores most of that bone loss. Additional restrictions could lead more kids to develop eating disorders and make it harder for people with eating disorders to recover, Menzel said. Tiffany Justice, a co-founder of the influential conservative group Moms for Liberty, dismisses gender-affirming care for minors as “child abuse” and “snake oil,” and she said her organization is working to ban gender-affirming care for minors in every state. Research shows such state bans on gender-affirming care heighten the stress and anxiety with which many trans people already live.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants consume only breast milk — no formula — until they are about 6 months old. But at that age, just 56% of US babies consume any breast milk, according the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But for some women or birthing parents, exclusive breastfeeding or chestfeeding is simply not possible because of inadequate supply. “It is personalized.” Studies suggest that breastfed babies have lower risks of illness and chronic health problems, and that breastfeeding parents have lower risks of maternal diabetes and hypertension. “We have a long way to go.”The Lactation Network is privately held and doesn’t have external investment, Neff said.

Florence, Italy CNN —It was built as a secret passageway for the elite of Florence to pass undetected, far from the regular citizens. The main stretch of the corridor, running from the Uffizi to the Boboli Gardens outside Palazzo Pitti, opened to the public on Friday. The corridor connects Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti, via the Uffizi Galleries and the Ponte Vecchio. Volkswagen has been in talks with union representatives since September over measures it says are necessary for it to compete with cheaper Chinese rivals, lackluster demand in Europe and slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles. “After long and intensive negotiations, the agreement is an important signal for the future viability of the Volkswagen brand,” group CEO Oliver Blume said in a statement. VW said the deal would allow savings of 15 billion euros annually in the medium term and saw no significant impact on its 2024 guidance. “No site will be closed, no one will be laid off for operational reasons and our company wage agreement will be secured for the long term,” said works council chief Daniela Cavallo. “With this triple deal, we have achieved a rock-solid solution under the most difficult economic conditions,” she said.

But the bill, the Social Security Fairness Act, may undergo changes if some Senators' efforts to add amendments are successful. Per the original proposal, the Social Security Fairness Act calls for eliminating Social Security provisions known as the Windfall Elimination Provision, or WEP, and Government Pension Offset, or GPO, that have been in place for decades. The WEP reduces Social Security benefits for individuals who receive pension or disability benefits from employment where they did not pay Social Security payroll taxes. The Social Security Fairness Act was passed by the House with a 327 majority in November. Social Security advocacy groups have pushed for larger comprehensive Social Security reform that would use tax increases to pay for making benefits more generous.

WASHINGTON — A lengthy investigation by Senate Democrats into alleged ethical lapses by Supreme Court justices has ended with the release of a report Saturday criticizing the judiciary and calling for legislative reforms that incoming Republican leadership opposes. “The Supreme Court has mired itself in an ethical crisis of its own making by failing to address justices’ ethical misconduct for decades,” the report says. “An enforceable code of conduct for the Supreme Court is essential in light of the court’s failure to police itself,” the report says. In other findings, the report found justices are lax in identifying conflicts of interest that should trigger recusal. “This entire investigation was never about ‘ethics’ but about trying to undermine the Supreme Court because the Court is no longer acting like a super legislature handing down opinions implementing the Democrats’ political agenda,” he wrote.

CNN —Researchers on an expedition in Peru have discovered 27 animal species new to science – among them a “blob-headed fish” and a type of semi-aquatic mouse. But they were not expecting to unearth so many species new to science: four mammals, eight fish, three amphibians and 10 butterfly species. Among the most surprising new species was an amphibious mouse with webbed toes – to adapt for life in the water. Also described for the first time was the “blob-headed” fish, which gets its name from its enlarged, blob-like head. “The blob-headed fish has an incredibly bizarre head that looks almost like a giant swollen nose,” Larsen told CNN.

Yet in a few respects, a bit of wobbly action in the indexes, surge in volatility and reversals in some of the more overheated assets were overdue and probably necessary to test the bull market against higher bond yields and a more-foggy policy horizon. The S & P 500 retreated back to a check of levels seen the morning after Election Day and held there. The one-line story of this entire 26-month bull market is, "Inflation coming down faster than the economy has slowed." The resolute bullish commentators like to point out that the current bull phase is not particularly mature, with the average duration of a post-1945 cyclical bull market (defined as the span between 20% or greater index declines) exceeding five years. Yet both of those extended bull cycles featured two 19% S & P 500 setbacks each (in 1990, 1998, 2011 and 2018), barely stopping short of a loss that would've punctuated them.

The looming specter of a government shutdown could spell delays for holiday travelers this year. A shutdown could also translate to $1 billion per week in losses to the American travel economy, according to the U.S. Travel Association. People opting to travel by car could also face longer trips, even though the nation’s highways aren’t immediately affected by a government shutdown in any meaningful way. AAA said it projected that roughly 119 million people would trek 50 miles or more from home during the holidays, from Dec. 21 until Jan. 1 — an increase of about 3 million travelers from a year before. “This year, with Christmas Day falling on a Wednesday, we’re anticipating record-breaking travel numbers the weekend before and the weekend after the holiday,” Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement this month.

The agency’s Parker Solar Probe is days away from making its closest-ever approach to the sun on Tuesday, swooping nearer to our star than any other human-made object in history. As the Parker Solar Probe swoops close to the sun, it will likely fly through plumes of solar plasma and could even dive into active regions of the star, Korreck said. Honda and Nissan are considering producing vehicles in one another's factories as part of their plan to deepen ties and potentially merge, Japan's Kyodo news agency said on Saturday. Honda will consider supplying hybrid vehicles to Nissan as part of the plan, the report said, without citing the source of the information. A merger of Honda, Japan's second-largest car company, and Nissan, its third-largest, would create the world's third-largest auto group by vehicle sales, behind Toyota and Volkswagen, making 7.4 million vehicles a year. As announced, Honda, "Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors are in the process of bringing together our strengths and exploring potential forms of cooperation, but nothing has been decided yet," a Honda spokesperson said, when asked about the report. The agreement was nevertheless hailed as a "Christmas miracle" by union leaders after 70 hours of grueling negotiations, the longest in the company's 87-year history, as there would be no immediate site closures, layoffs or wage cuts. Volkswagen has been in talks with union representatives since September over measures it says are necessary for it to compete with cheaper Chinese rivals, lackluster demand in Europe and slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles. "After long and intensive negotiations, the agreement is an important signal for the future viability of the Volkswagen brand," group CEO Oliver Blume said in a statement. I wanted a more flexible job that allowed me to stay at home with my kids. The pay wasn't great (after 10 years of teaching I was still taking home just around $3,000 a month) and I didn't enjoy the politics of teaching. Becoming a freelance writerBefore I went into education, I had been a journalist for a few years. So while I was still teaching, I joined Upwork, a website that connects freelancers with those looking to hire contract workers. I had just made $6,000 in one month from freelancing — and that was while I was still teaching.

The hurricane killed at least 223 people across the Southeast, about half of them in North Carolina, authorities said. Empty apartment complexes and waterlogged vehicles rot in the faint winter sun. Tree stumps and branches, trash and household appliances waste away on roadsides and in rivers. Asheville resident Jeff Davis, 62, said he has tuned out the noise and adapted to living amid the chaos. Typically, the winter months draw millions of visitors to the alluring blue mountains, inviting hiking trails and live music venues.

Since its 1983 release, "A Christmas Story" has become a beloved holiday classic. Russia's economy will be ground to a halt by 2026, a think tank said this week. Massive government spending on defense is costing other sectors, Alexandra Prokopenko wrote. "Yet this image of resilience is deceptive," Alexandra Prokopenko wrote for Carnegie Politika this week. "Over the past two years, Russia's economy has operated like a marathoner on fiscal steroids—and now those steroids are wearing off." I was worried about how my adult children and new partner would bond and get along. Once we started traveling together, though, we got closer and really felt like a family. When I first met my partner almost 10 years ago, my two daughters were in college and not home much. My partner and my daughter's boyfriend got on better than any of us could have hoped, and we all loved being in the one house. At one point, my partner shared how much he enjoys a cold dip in the sea in Wales in October.

Investors on the hunt for ways to play defense if losses deepen in what has suddenly become a volatile market, may want to take a look at these stocks. That fueled a selloff that extended the Dow Jones Industrial Average's longest daily losing streak since 1974. Stocks bounced back Friday, but that doesn't mean the volatility has run its course or that the market won't enter a correction of 10% or more. Should that occur, CNBC Pro screened for individual stocks to help investors play defense. Two other utilities, a traditional refuge in times of turmoil, also made the cut: Duke Energy and American Electric Power .

Nearly a week after a devastating cyclone, most streets have reopened in Mayotte, a tiny French island off the east coast of Africa. President Emmanuel Macron of France, who toured the territory, got into tense exchanges with residents. And services like cellphone reception have slowly been returning to normal. The day after the disaster, France’s top official in Mayotte ignited broad alarm when he said of the death toll, “Maybe we will be closer to a thousand, maybe several thousand.”

Knowing I was going to be spending Christmas alone for the first time felt like a punishment. The previous year, I blacked outThe previous Christmas Eve, I had been in the same hospital for a mental health crisis. When I had been discharged earlier on Christmas Day, I went home and slept through the day. There were no awkward conversations around the dinner table with relatives I only see at Christmas, big birthdays, or funerals. Many people think the idea of spending Christmas on their own sounds lonely and unappealing.

My fourth-grade teacher showed up to school with painting materials one day. My teacher made me feel seen and included, and I still remember her. That happened to me when I was sitting on the floor of my fourth-grade classroom, painting a poster for a school project. When my teacher came over to check on our progress, she leaned in and told me how much she liked my painting. But instead of assuming I didn't celebrate Christmas, which I did, my teacher just wanted me to feel included.
