"Netflix missed their numbers, and Wall Street woke up," said Paul Hardart, director of NYU Stern's entertainment, media and technology program. A wide range of companies and employees were impacted, from entertainment giants to independent production companies to Hollywood talent agencies. More consolidation among the legacy media companies and independent production companies is widely expected, which often entails job cuts. Entertainment companies will get back to staffing up, but the jobs will be in stronger growth areas like gaming, streaming, and advertising, more than in filmed entertainment programming. Here are the Hollywood companies, listed alphabetically, that have made layoffs since the summer.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Arson was the cause of a massive weekend fire that charred and indefinitely closed a vital section of a Los Angeles freeway, causing major traffic headaches for hundreds of thousands of commuters, California authorities said. Los Angeles residents were urged to avoid travel to the area Monday and to work from home if possible. Ertugrul Taciroglu, chair of the civil and environmental engineering department at the University of California, Los Angeles, said part of the challenge is how expensive real estate has become. The city and county of Los Angeles in 2020 agreed to provide housing for almost 7,000 people living under freeways and near exit and entrance ramps. Associated Press writer Christopher Weber in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

Consumers See Worsening Economy, Higher Inflation

Consumers continued to sour on the economic outlook in November while also growing more pessimistic about future inflation, according to the first estimate from the University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey. The index of consumer sentiment fell 5% to a reading of 60.4, down from 63.8 in October. “Ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine weighed on many consumers as well.”“Overall, lower-income consumers and younger consumers exhibited the strongest declines in sentiment,” Hsu added. Various surveys measuring the minds of consumers have found them to be worried about inflation and the economy in general. “Consumer sentiment continues to trend downward at a moderate pace as consumers attempt to juggle inflation and higher interest rates,” said Damian McIntyre, Portfolio manager and head of multi asset solutions at Federated Hermes.

To be fair, these dead giveaways don't tend to show up early on in a relationship. As a psychologist with 25 years of experience, here's my best advice for recognizing the early warning of highly narcissistic people:1. According to decades of research, such starry-eyed treatment of our partners isn't just fun — it can predict the longevity and happiness of romantic relationships. Narcissists are rigidly invested in maintaining a sense of specialness. But healthy relationships can handle a slower pace, some predictability, an appreciation of each person's uniqueness, and direct conversations about how you are feeling.

Hezbollah’s Nasrallah Fans Flames of Wider War

Secretary of State Antony Blinken pressed Israel on Friday for a humanitarian pause in Gaza to provide relief to Palestinian civilians as worries of a wider Middle East war mount. Asked Friday what his message was to Americans in Gaza, Biden told reporters at the White House, "They'll be coming home." He did not respond to a question about whether he could contain a wider war. Nasrallah said the fighting along the border was weakening Israel and "deterring the enemy" by drawing resources away from Gaza. Biden has also called for justice for Palestinian civilians – and recently, under political pressure from his own Democratic Party, called for the humanitarian pause.

President Joe Biden announced Monday a $1.3 billion federal investment to build three new interstate power lines in an effort to upgrade the United States' outdated electric grid and transition it to clean energy. The department said the construction of the power lines would create roughly 13,000 new jobs. U.S. energy infrastructure was already in need of an upgrade. The $1.3 billion investment is a step in the right direction, but it does not mean three new power lines will magically appear. Federal agencies, along with the Biden administration, have previously said they would work to expedite federal permitting processes to make grid infrastructure development more efficient.

Saleemul Huq, a pioneering climate scientist from Bangladesh who pushed to get the world to understand, pay for and adapt to worsening warming impacts on poorer nations, died of cardiac arrest Saturday. “Saleem always focused on the poor and marginalized, making sure that climate change was about people, their lives, health and livelihoods,” said University of Washington climate and health scientist Kristie Ebi, a friend of Huq’s. Huq, who died in Dhaka, directed and helped found the International Centre for Climate Change and Development there. He was an early force for community-based efforts to adapt to what climate change did to poor nations. United Nations climate negotiators last year approved the creation of that fund, but efforts to get it going further have so far stalled.

The strike has shut down 13 locks between Lake Erie and Montreal, bottling up ships in the Great Lakes and preventing more ships from coming in. It’s the first time that a strike has shut down the vital shipping artery since 1968. A U.S. Navy warship, the littoral combat ship USS Marinette, was supposed to leave Cleveland on Lake Erie on Monday, but remains stuck. Shipments within the four Great Lakes from Superior to Erie such as iron ore and coal can still go through. How do we bring the best out in our boys, so they become the best of men? I think boys can turn into better men if we teach our sons that they don’t have to fight the world. And so, with practice — it didn’t come naturally to me — I smile and say, “They’re great kids.” That’s the overheard praise. Parents need to be self-aware to realize there’s value in the quiet moments and allow space for spontaneous contributions. It is the rare night I fall asleep before turning a few pages of a book. So, I was quite surprised to find myself immersed in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache novels, all 18 of them. Knowing that I would not run out of books, no matter how many sleepless nights I might be facing, calmed me. Continuing a crackdown on cryptocurrency companies, the New York attorney general accused three major players in the digital asset industry of lying to investors and concealing losses in a $1 billion fraud scheme, according to a lawsuit filed on Thursday. The suit targets Gemini Trust, the exchange run by the twin brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss; the lender Genesis Capital; and Digital Currency Group, the parent company of Genesis. The attorney general, Letitia James, contends in the suit that Gemini lied to investors about the dangers of Gemini Earn, a program started by Gemini and Genesis that promised investors a high rate of return — up to 8 percent — if they essentially lent their cryptocurrency to Genesis. But Genesis struggled after the FTX cryptocurrency exchange, founded by Sam-Bankman Fried, imploded last November. It froze accounts amid a crash in digital asset values, leaving Earn investors unable to reclaim hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of cryptocurrency.

President Biden could very well go down in history as the last American president born during World War II and shaped by a view of American power nurtured in the Cold War. To Mr. Biden’s mind, this has been the moment he has trained for his entire political career, a point he often makes when challenged about his age. In the past eight months, he has visited two countries in the midst of active wars. He has married his public embraces with private cautions, and kept American troops out of both conflicts — so far. Whether Mr. Biden can bring the American population along, however, is a more unsettled question than at any moment in his presidency, and the backdrop of his rare Oval Office address on Thursday night.
