Realtor.com identified the top 10 places in the US with the lowest cost of living. Small cities in the South and Midwest dominate the list, with a Texas city taking the top spot. While the cost of living varies widely from state to state and city to city, several spots across the US can offer residents a comfortable standard of living with prices that don't break the bank. "Home prices in these areas were $100,000 or more below the national median in September," Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com, said in the report. TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan’s defense ministry said Tuesday that live-fire Chinese drills in a province facing the island are routine annual exercises but also possibly part of China’s “deterrence effect” in the waters of the Taiwan Strait. China’s Maritime Safety Administration, in a notice late Monday, said an area around Niushan island in Fujian province would be closed off for four hours starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday (9 p.m. Monday ET) for live-fire drills. Taiwan’s defense ministry said in a statement that those exercises were part of routine Chinese training and were being closely monitored. “No matter how large the scale of the drill is, they should not be frequent and close to Taiwan,” he said. China detests Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who took office in May, as a “separatist” and has rebuffed his calls for talks.

TEL AVIV — Israeli officials are weighing an Egyptian proposal for a small-scale cease-fire deal with Hamas aimed at trying to build momentum for a larger agreement, an Israeli official told NBC News. Israel’s security cabinet has discussed the Egyptian proposal for a two-week truce in Gaza, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The Egyptian proposal calls for the release of just six Israeli hostages in exchange, the official said. The Egyptian proposal was first reported by Axios.
