Realtor.com identified the top 10 places in the US with the lowest cost of living. Small cities in the South and Midwest dominate the list, with a Texas city taking the top spot. While the cost of living varies widely from state to state and city to city, several spots across the US can offer residents a comfortable standard of living with prices that don't break the bank. "Home prices in these areas were $100,000 or more below the national median in September," Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com, said in the report. Below are the 10 US cities with the lowest cost of living.

BEIJING, China — China will offer the Taliban tariff-free access to its vast construction, energy and consumer sectors, Beijing’s envoy to Afghanistan said on Thursday, as the ailing resource-rich but diplomatically-isolated regime looks to build up its markets. “China will offer Afghanistan zero-tariff treatment for 100% tariff lines,” Zhao Xing, Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan, wrote on his official X account late on Thursday, above a photo of him meeting acting deputy prime minister Abdul Kabir. The country exported no commodities to China last year, the data shows, but Zhao has regularly posted photos of him meeting Taliban officials responsible for mining, petroleum, trade and regional connectivity since his appointment last September. “In the Horn of Africa, China’s Special Envoy Xue Bing said that the best way to resolve security and terrorism challenges is through economic development. I think they are bringing that same mindset to Afghanistan,” said Eric Orlander, co-founder of the China-Global South Project.

Houthi rebels used Russian satellite tracking data to hit ships in the Red Sea, The Wall Street Journal reported. AdvertisementHouthi rebels in Yemen used satellite data provided by Russia to target and attack commercial ships in the Red Sea, The Wall Street Journal reported. One of the Journal's sources said that the satellite data was transferred to the Houthis via members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps embedded with the rebels in Yemen. AdvertisementThe Houthis have for months harassed commercial ships in the Red Sea with drones and missiles, for what they say is retaliation against Israel for its bombardment of Gaza. AdvertisementMeanwhile, the US military has rotated multiple aircraft carrier groups to fend off Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, last week striking several targets in Yemen with B-2 Spirit stealth bombers.

Israel is also heavily backed by the United States, which has supplied more than 29,000 guided bombs, artillery rockets and assorted missiles since 2009. A spiraling conflict between Iran and Israel, one of the United States’ closest allies, could pull U.S. forces positioned throughout the region into the fray. Israel has told the United States that it will not attack Iran’s nuclear or oil facilities in its expected attack. Though highly unlikely, an Israeli strike on Iran’s oil facilities could prompt Iran or its proxies to target refineries in Saudi Arabia or the U.A.E. This April, Iran’s attack involving more than 300 drones and missiles, in retaliation for Israel’s killing of seven Iranian officials in Syria, shattered that supposition.

South and North Korea troops potentially entering the Russia-Ukraine war is unlikely to stoke a wider conflict between the two Korean countries, experts said. The U.S. on Wednesday confirmed that North Korean troops had been sent to Russia. "The messaging we are seeing is likely intended to deter the actual deployment of North Korean troops to Ukraine from Russia. But that will depend on how the North Korean troops are deployed, she added. "In such a case, South Korean troops would be shooting in self defence, thus limiting the nature of such combat encounters."

That’s helped push uncertainty among small business owners to an all-time high since the nearly 40-year inception of a monthly survey the National Federation of Independent Business conducts to gauge small business sentiment. The scale of firms whose investment plans are impacted by election uncertainty is “pretty remarkable” compared to prior elections, said Daniel Weitz, survey director at the Atlanta Fed. The Fed’s Beige Book, a quarterly collection of survey responses from businesses compiled by the 12 regional Fed banks published Wednesday, highlighted a wide range of businesses that are suffering because of election uncertainty. But the blowback that businesses are facing from the election uncertainty should subside once the policy path ahead becomes more clear, at which point we could start to see a rebound in hiring and capital investment businesses make, Meyer told CNN. The combination of these three major unknowns is shaping small business owners’ uncertain outlooks, said Holly Wade, executive director of the NFIB Research Center.

Bond market investors are having trouble figuring out an economy that looks good from 30,000 feet, but less so closer to the ground. Whether it's payrolls, gross domestic product or retail sales, or a host of other measures, growth looks solid, at the very least. On Wall Street, the general view was of concern: The Beige Book "showed no material improvement in a generally bleak outlook," Citigroup economist Andrew Hollenhorst wrote. However, if growth deteriorates, as the Beige Book indicates it has, that likely would push the Fed towards more reductions. "Despite recent stronger-than-expected data on U.S. employment, retail sales, and consumer inflation, the Fed's latest Beige Book signals a still weakening economy."

NEW DELHI, India — India and China have reached a deal on patrolling their disputed frontier to end a four-year military stand-off, the Indian foreign minister said Monday, paving the way for improved political and business ties between the Asian giants. India’s tougher vetting of all Chinese investment after the clashes effectively turned away billions of dollars from the likes of carmakers BYD and Great Wall Motor, and added more red tape in Indian companies’ interactions with Chinese stakeholders. However, Indian imports from China have surged 56% since the 2020 border clash, nearly doubling New Delhi’s trade deficit with Beijing to $85 billion. China remains India’s biggest source of goods and was its largest supplier of industrial products last year. Asked about the impact of Monday’s pact on trade with and investment from China, Jaishankar said: “It has just happened.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan’s defense ministry said Tuesday that live-fire Chinese drills in a province facing the island are routine annual exercises but also possibly part of China’s “deterrence effect” in the waters of the Taiwan Strait. China’s Maritime Safety Administration, in a notice late Monday, said an area around Niushan island in Fujian province would be closed off for four hours starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday (9 p.m. Monday ET) for live-fire drills. Taiwan’s defense ministry said in a statement that those exercises were part of routine Chinese training and were being closely monitored. “No matter how large the scale of the drill is, they should not be frequent and close to Taiwan,” he said. China detests Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who took office in May, as a “separatist” and has rebuffed his calls for talks.
