Airbus develops fuel-cell engine for hydrogen plane

Airbus has started developing a fuel-cell engine, it said on Wednesday, sticking with plans to introduce a hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft by 2035. The system is one of several options being considered for a potential zero-emission aircaft based on hydrogen, Airbus said. Jet engine makers Rolls-Royce , General Electric , Safran and Pratt & Whitney are among its biggest suppliers. An alternative approach based on combusting liquid hydrogen in more conventional jet engines depends on heavy cooling in larger and heavier tanks. Airbus will start ground and flight testing fuel-cell architecture towards the middle of the decade, the company said during a two-day sustainability event.

A spokesperson for Airbus said it had no comment on deliveries ahead of its next monthly bulletin in early December. At least one engine maker is experiencing renewed pressure to shift more engines away from supporting aircraft production to a pool of spares for existing customers, the sources said. Currently some 129 Pratt-powered Airbus jets and 55 fitted with CFM's LEAP engines are parked, according to Ascend by Cirium's head of global consulting Rob Morris. At the same time, engine industry sources insist snags on their side of the fence are not solely to blame for delays. In July, Airbus said it would reach an interim production goal of 65 A320-family narrow-body jets a month in early 2024 instead of summer 2023.

Today's EVs run on lithium ion batteries — mostly made with lithium, cobalt, manganese and high-grade nickel, whose prices have soared. The EVs of the future — those arriving after 2025 — could shift to sodium ion or lithium sulfur battery cells that could be up to two-thirds cheaper than today's lithium ion cells. China's CATL (300750.SZ) has said it plans to begin producing sodium ion cells in 2023. Michigan-based Amandarry and British startup AMTE Power (AMTE.L) are developing sodium ion batteries using sodium chloride — basically table salt — as the main cathode ingredient. Battery developers hope they can add sodium ion and lithium sulfur batteries to the range open to the auto industry.
Supply shortages have crippled aerospace's ability to meet a snapback in demand for travel. The supply of castings has been singled out as problematic by aerospace executives as manufacturing them is a labor-intensive process and it takes time to train new hires. Shortages are now prompting Raytheon to choose between making new engines and servicing old ones. TRAVEL DEMAND A 'WATCH ITEM'Raytheon, whose Pratt & Whitney engines power all of Airbus' A220 jets and about half of the A320neo aircraft, said it had not seen any signs of travel demand, which has turbocharged the industry's recovery, subsiding. However, he added travel demand remains a "watch item", amid recessionary fears.

The lawsuit filed on Thursday is the latest development in the high-profile case around Gabby Petito’s death. In doing so, the lawsuit alleges officers disregarded signs of violence they should have been trained to notice. The suit also alleges police officers “coached Gabby to provide answers that the officers used to justify their decision not to enforce Utah law,” which requires action be taken in response to domestic violence incidents. “Our officers acted with kindness, respect, and empathy toward Ms. Petito,” city spokesperson Lisa Adams said in a statement. An independent investigation in January faulted police for making “several unintentional mistakes” including not issuing a domestic violence citation after Petito told police she had hit her fiancé.
CNN —Rumor has it, Adele isn’t just a great singer – she’s also great at career advice. That is, at least, according to Jennifer Lawrence. Regarding her 2016 movie “Passengers,” which co-starred Chris Pratt and stands as one of the less acclaimed films of her decorated career, Lawrence said, “Adele told me not to do it! “I was like, ‘Oh no, you guys are here because I’m here, and I’m here because you’re here. Airlines have the passengers. Now they need the planes

But new planes are in short supply, they warned, limiting growth and keeping fares high. JetBlue Airways said Tuesday that it was supposed to receive 29 planes from Airbus next year but will only get about 22. That means airlines that had parked planes and slashed growth are now struggling to expand. Boeing and Airbus, which didn't immediately comment, are set to report results on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Raytheon's Pratt and Whitney engines fly on both Boeing and Airbus planes, and its Collins Aerospace unit supplies both manufacturers.

CFM International told media on Sunday that the company has no plans to build a supersonic engine for Boom. Colorado-based startup Boom Supersonic is developing an ultra-high-speed jet, known as Overture, that could catapult travelers from New York to London in less than four hours. But, there is one problem — no engine makers want to help Boom create a supersonic engine. Engine maker Rolls-Royce was at one point a contender, having signed an "engagement agreement" with Boom in 2020 to look into a supersonic engine. However, if Boom is able to pull off creating a supersonic engine, it could give the company a big advantage in the industry.
The Office of the Inspector General, under the leadership of Robert J. Devlin Jr., is one of multiple agencies investigating the officer's use of force. The suspected gunman fired more than 80 rounds during the siege, the Office of the Inspector General said. The Office of the Inspector General said Sunday that it appears the officer's use of force was justified. The Bristol Police Union did not immediately respond to a request for its response to the bodycam footage.
CNN —Video game purists expecting a faithful adaptation of the original Nintendo game might be somewhat surprised by first teaser for the new “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which debuted on Thursday. This is also when the game’s memorable music is finally heard, albeit briefly. The CGI-animated film, from Nintendo and Illumination, features several other big name stars, including Charlie Day as Mario’s brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The last time the iconic video game was translated into a feature-length studio film was almost 30 years ago, with the ill-begotten 1993 release of the live-action “Super Mario Bros.,” starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. The new movie is due to hit theaters on April 7, 2023.
"Foreign aircraft will drop out of the fleet," Rostec said in a written response to Reuters questions about its plans and the situation in Russia's aviation industry. "We believe that this process is irreversible and Boeing and Airbus planes will never be delivered to Russia," it said. Russian airlines, including Aeroflot, splurged on Boeing and Airbus aircraft as they sought to rebuild their fleets after the chaos of the 1990s. The MS-21 has been Russia's attempt to break into the main part of the jet market dominated by Airbus and Boeing. Then we will install PD-8 engines on this type of aircraft," Rostec said.
A worker cuts a cast at Mitchell Aerospace, Inc., a manufacturer of light alloy sand castings for the aerospace industry, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada September 9, 2022. REUTERS/Christinne MuschiMONTREAL/CHICAGO, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Canada's Mitchell Aerospace has a booming business - and a shop-floor shortfall that is reverberating from Boeing (BA.N) to Airbus (AIR.PA). A slowing global economy has started to unwind some supply chain shortages that hit manufacturers and contributed to inflation. But aircraft parts makers are still reeling from deep job cuts undertaken when planes were grounded during the pandemic, a sign of how uneven the supply chain crisis remains. Airbus' production target has declined, while Boeing warned supply chain pressures have capped its ability to ramp up output.
Sept 20 (Reuters) - United Airlines (UAL.O) removed 25 of its Boeing (BA.N) 777-200 airplanes from service this week after discovering it had failed to perform required inspections on the wing leading-edge panels. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the airline had disclosed the issue to the agency after an internal audit and proposed a plan to complete the inspections. "We've completed inspections on 10 of those aircraft, and are working with the FAA to return others to service while inspections are ongoing over the next two weeks," United said Tuesday. In May, the FAA cleared United's 52 Boeing 777 planes equipped with Pratt & Whitney (PW) 4000 engines to return to service. United said Tuesday the wing leading-edge panel inspections of some of those 777-200s are not related to engines or recent engine work.

Travel analyst Henry Harteveldt told Insider that Boom may build its own engine, which could be advantageous. However, Rolls-Royce told AIN Online in early September that it has since left the table. "We've completed our contract with Boom and delivered various engineering studies for their Overture supersonic program," Rolls-Royce said. "As a practice, we avoid commenting on any ongoing and confidential negotiation with our suppliers, until both sides are ready to announce jointly," Boom told Insider on Friday. "However, we can reconfirm our intention to announce Boom's selected engine partner and transformational approach for reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable supersonic flight, later this year."
