CNN —President-elect Donald Trump over the weekend suggested the US should retake the Panama Canal, an idea that was immediately rejected by the government of Panama, which has controlled the passage for decades. The US-built canal was opened in 1914 and controlled by the United States until a 1977 agreement provided for its eventual handover to Panama. The canal was jointly operated by both countries until the Panamanian government retained full control after 1999. Speaking to a crowd of young conservatives in Phoenix on Sunday, Trump said if the spirit of that agreement is not followed, “then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States. “As President, I want to express precisely that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belong to PANAMA, and will continue to be,” President José Raúl Mulino said in a statement Sunday.

CNBC Daily Open: Inflation and dot plots

This report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our international markets newsletter. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. But November's PCE came in cooler than expected. Would the Fed, then, have presented the world with a slightly different dot plot, if they'd had the chance to review the PCE data first? Even if November's PCE index did signal inflation returning to its downward trajectory, one month's data wouldn't have shifted the dots around.

The broad market S & P 500 and the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average , meanwhile, have risen 24% and 14%, respectively. Although the rally is widely expected to continue in 2025 , several prominent stocks may face declines. However, that rally could peter out in the new year, with analysts as a group believing that the stock could fall more than 43% in 2025. But analysts don't believe the stock will continue to gain next year, forecasting more than 7% downside potential. Other stocks on the list include Texas Pacific Land Corp ., which has advanced 116% year to date and entered the S & P 500 late last month.

Will You Have a White Christmas This Year? Three years ago, NOAA updated the average probabilities of a white Christmas across the United States. The song “White Christmas” was written during one of those long, snowless Christmas spells. But by the time Mr. Berlin wrote the song at the end of the 1930s, New York City had not seen a white Christmas since 1930. With flakes possibly late on Christmas Eve, New Yorkers have at least a chance of escaping the long white Christmas drought.

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks during the Tribal Nations Summit at the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., U.S., December 9, 2024. The Biden administration has withdrawn two major plans to deliver student loan forgiveness. The Education department posted notices in the Federal Register last week that it was withdrawing the plans, weeks before President-elect Donald Trump enters the White House. The Education department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump is a vocal critic of student loan forgiveness, and on the campaign trail he called President Joe Biden's efforts "vile" and "not even legal."

Aaron Goldsmid, head of product at Deel, has previously worked for Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter. This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Aaron Goldsmid, a 44-year-old from San Francisco about mistakes he made early in his career. I tell early career techies to ask themselves how their next role will get them to the role after that. You can accelerate quickly into a senior role, but taking a less fancy role and diversifying your experience might mean your upside long-term is much higher. As a senior leader at Deel, I'm very conscious about how I present myself to early career folks.

Representative Gaetz refused to answer questions about his relationships with the women involved. The woman asserted to Representative Gaetz that she was being “treated differently" than other women he was paying for sex. 53 Mr. Greenberg told the Committee that Representative Gaetz was aware that the women they had sex with and paid had met Mr. Greenberg through the “sugar dating” website. In 2017, using a pseudonymous account, Representative Gaetz made payments to women largely without a description of the purpose of the payment. Brisbane, Australia CNN —Australia is working to verify the authenticity of a video that purportedly shows one of its nationals captured by Russian forces while fighting in Ukraine. The man, whose hands appear to be tightly bound with silver tape, identifies himself on camera as 32-year-old Oscar Jenkins and says he lives in Australia and Ukraine. When asked about the reports of a Melbourne man captured by Russia, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters Monday the government was seeking information through the Australian embassy in Moscow. In the video, which CNN has been unable to geolocate, Jenkins appears to have trouble understanding questions put to him in Russian. Last month, Russian state media reported that a 22-year-old British man had been taken prisoner while fighting for Ukraine in Russia’s Kursk region.

Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, on Sunday compared tech mogul Elon Musk to a “prime minister,” praising Musk for speaking out against an early version of a stopgap funding bill last week. It feels like as if Elon Musk is our prime minister.”Gonzales added that he spoke with Musk “a couple of times” during a chaotic week for House Republicans as GOP leadership scrambled to pull together a package to fund the government that would garner support from a majority of the House GOP caucus. Shortly after Musk started speaking out against the bill, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance released their own statement against the bill, tanking already wavering support for the bill among congressional Republicans. At a Turning Point USA event in Arizona, Trump downplayed concerns that Musk is usurping control from the president-elect. The lead-up into the holidays will be heavy on precipitation for many Americans as another storm system moves in across the Great Lakes and Northeast regions, bringing rain and snow in the days before Christmas. Those in the Northeast were already treated to snow on Saturday, the first day of winter, and are expected to get another few inches between Monday and Tuesday. Showers are expected for Northern California and Washington later this week and potential for snow in the area's mountain ranges. But it will be the interior Northeast, Michigan, and Wisconsin that are expected to receive anywhere between two to six inches of snow before Christmas Eve. The warmth is expected to spread over the week until the entire contiguous U.S. is feeling high or above average temperatures by Friday.

The Summary The bird flu outbreak took several concerning turns this year, with the number of human cases up to at least 64. Experts outlined several indicators that the virus’ spread is going in the wrong direction. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the country’s first severe bird flu infection on Wednesday, a critically ill patient in Louisiana. “So many signs are going in the wrong direction.”No bird flu transmission between humans has been documented, and the CDC maintains that the immediate risk to public health is low. If someone gets co-infected with a seasonal flu virus and bird flu, the two can exchange chunks of genetic code.

Current and former University of Michigan students have filed a lawsuit against the school alleging that it targeted and disproportionately disciplined pro-Palestinian students involved in campus protests. The University of Michigan did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News. One such protest action included in the University of Michigan suit was a sit-in in the lobby of the president’s office in November 2023. Though the sit-in was a peaceful protest, the suit says, several students were injured as a result of police intervention. Students who were at the protest were alerted in May, months later, that a complaint was filed against them for alleged violations of the students rights and responsibilities code.
