It's been over a decade since I sat in the water of a Pyongyang public bathhouse, fielding questions from several North Korean university students. Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where the bodies of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are preserved for viewers to see inside. The show is the world's largest gymnastics display and one of the most important events in the North Korean calendar. What looked like tens of thousands of North Korean children and adults played music, gave traditional dance performances, and conducted intricate gymnastics routines. During my exchange, I spoke to young North Korean people, asking them about their ambitions.

North Korea will resume international tourism this winter, ending a COVID-era ban on travelers, according to operators that organize tours to the country. Family-owned candy giant Mars, whose brands include M&M's and Snickers, said on Wednesday it would buy Cheez-It and Pringles maker Kellanova in a nearly $36 billion deal, making it the biggest deal in the packaged food industry. Mars will pay $83.50 per share in an all-cash deal for Kellanova, representing about a 33% premium to Kellanova's close on Aug. 2, before Reuters first reported that Mars was exploring a deal for the Pringles maker. Kellanova, which split from WK Kellogg last October, is rooted in a salty snacks business and sells cereal outside of North America. WK Kellogg was left with the North American cereal business of Kellogg, the original parent company. Kellanova logged net sales of more than $13 billion in 2023.

Officials in North Carolina are searching for an inmate convicted of killing a 1-year-old girl after he escaped while being taken to a medical facility Tuesday in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Alston was convicted of first-degree murder in 2018 and sentenced to life behind bars, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. The department said in a statement that Alston arrived about 7 a.m. Tuesday in a prison transport van to the University of North Carolina Medical Center's gastroenterology unit, where he had a medical appointment. Keith Acree, communications director for the Department of Adult Correction, told NBC affiliate WRAL of Raleigh that Alston was wearing a waist chain and handcuffs when he fled. Authorities established a perimeter covering at least a one-mile radius around the location of the escape, the Department of Adult Correction said.

Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

Oklahoma City AP —A third set of remains with a gunshot wound has been found at a Tulsa cemetery in the search for graves of victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, according to a state official. “We have exhumed him, he is in the forensic lab and undergoing analysis,” on-site at Tulsa’s Oaklawn Cemetery, Stackelbeck said. The discovery comes nearly a month after the first identification of remains previously exhumed during the search for massacre victims were identified as World War I veteran C.L. Forensic anthropologist Phoebe Stubblefield said no gunshot wound was found in Daniel’s remains, but said the remains were fragmented and a cause of death could not be determined.
