The president has long resisted calls from Ukrainian officials to ease restrictions on the weapons. “We’re working that out right now,” Biden said when questioned this week whether he would permit Western-provided long-range missiles to target military sites like airfields, missile launchers, fuel tanks and ammunition depots inside Russia. Still, that the conversation over long-range weapons is happening at all is an indication of how stalled battlefield dynamics are causing western leaders to rethink their approach. The revelation that Iran has been providing Russia with ballistic missiles has changed the debate over Ukraine’s capabilities, Lammy said. Earlier in the week, the bipartisan congressional Ukraine caucus called on Biden to allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with the long-range weapons.

SYDNEY, Australia — Australia will strip military awards from a group of war veterans over allegations that those under their command committed war crimes in Afghanistan, Defense Minister Richard Marles said Thursday. As part of delivering the final recommendations of the inquiry, known as the Brereton Report, Marles had written to several officers who served in Afghanistan, to inform them that medals awarded for service would be withdrawn, the defense minister said. “The allegations which are the subject of the Brereton Report are arguably the most serious allegations of Australian war crimes in our history,” Marles told Parliament on Thursday. A former soldier was charged with war crimes last year. More than 39,000 Australian troops served in Afghanistan and 41 were killed.

“This will mean that NATO countries – the United States and European countries – are at war with Russia,” Putin told reporters on Thursday. US officials have expressed concerns that allowing Ukraine to strike deep inside Russia could escalate the conflict and cause Russia to further accuse the US of being part of the war. Blinken said he discussed the restrictions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and would report back to President Biden. On Tuesday, the bipartisan congressional Ukraine caucus called on Biden to allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with the long-range weapons. The United States already does provide intelligence to Ukraine, and has previously assisted in the targeting, although not with the long-range systems currently being considered.

On Tuesday, the Russian military launched large-scale naval and air drills in the Sea of Japan alongside China. It's the second time in only three months that the powers have held joint military exercises, with drills held near the southern Chinese port of Guangdong in July. The joint exercises are taking place in the Sea of Japan and Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk. Some analysts, though, are pointing to tensions between Russia and China that could weaken the alliance. But for now, the alliance is growing closer, and Thomson said that the US will be watching the latest military exercises between Russia and China closely.

CNN —Pressure is building on President Joe Biden, including from within his own party, to loosen the restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US-provided weapons to strike deep inside Russia. On Tuesday, the bipartisan congressional Ukraine caucus called on Biden to allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with the long-range weapons. A group of key House Republican also urged Biden to ease the restrictions in a letter on Monday. On Tuesday, asked if the US will lift the restrictions, Biden answered, “we’re working that out right now.”Two US officials later told CNN that the Biden administration is not anticipating any policy changes when it comes to lifting restrictions. Asked about Trump’s comments, Sybiha, the Ukrainian foreign minister, also downplayed them.

CNN —When members of Congress meet on Capitol Hill to certify the electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election, the process, on the anniversary of the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack, will have the full weight of the federal government behind its security. The certification process on January 6, 2025, was designated as a national special security event by the Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas in the last week following a request from Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser, according to the US Secret Service. The designation is reserved for significant events – including the Super Bowl, presidential inaugurations and this summer’s NATO summit – where security is required on a mass scale. The source told CNN that agencies are still in the early stages of determining the security measures that will be in place for the Electoral College certification. “National Special Security Events are events of the highest national significance,” Eric Ranaghan, the special agent in charge of the USSS Dignitary Protective Division, said in a statement announcing the designation.

Reuters —Ukraine struck the Moscow region on Tuesday in its biggest drone attack so far on the Russian capital, killing at least one woman, wrecking dozens of homes and forcing around 50 flights to be diverted from airports around Moscow. Russia, the world’s biggest nuclear power, said it destroyed at least 20 Ukrainian attack drones as they swarmed over the Moscow region, which has a population of more than 21 million, and 124 more over eight other regions. The drone attacks on Russia damaged at high-rise apartment buildings in the Ramenskoye district of the Moscow region, setting flats on fire, residents told Reuters. Tuesday’s attack follow drone attacks Ukraine launched in early September targeting chiefly Russia’s energy and power facilities. Authorities of the Tula region, which neighbors the Moscow region to its north, said drone wreckage fell onto a fuel and energy facility but the “technological process” of the facility was not affected.

The US-made armored vehicles, which offer maneuverability, versatility, and sufficient firepower, have proven valuable to Ukraine efforts on the battlefield — more so than the main battle tanks and other heavy armor it's received. The US announced a new military aid package for Ukraine valued at $250 million to meet Ukraine's critical defense needs. One reason is that its received more Bradleys than it has main battle tanks from Western nations.
