The number of prescription opioid pills shipped in the U.S. in the second half of the 2010s decreased sharply even as a nationwide overdose crisis continued to deepen, according to data released Tuesday. But Mougey pointed out that as prescription drug shipments decreased, illicit opioids — particularly heroin and illegally produced versions of fentanyl — increased. During that time, prescription drugs were the opioids linked to the most deaths in the U.S. The newly released data is the first deep look at what happened with prescription drug shipments later in the 2010s. By the early 2010s, policymakers and doctors were restricting access to prescription opioids.

Stock prices were mostly higher in Asia on Monday as investors awaited an update on U.S. inflation and China’s latest economic data. The futures for the S&P 500 and Dow were trading higher. That could lead the Federal Reserve and other central banks to keep interest rates higher for longer, which would hurt prices for shares and other investments. On Friday, stocks edged higher on Wall Street, but markets still ended their first losing week in the last three. High interest rates are supposed to slow the economy and hurt the job market, which should ultimately help undercut inflation.

"Kroger will continue to vigorously defend against any other claims and lawsuits relating to opioids that the final agreement does not resolve," the company said in the releaseThis is breaking news.

Background: Pharmacy chains have been settling opioid claims. Three large pharmacy chains that compete with Kroger — Walgreens, CVS Health and Walmart — reached similar settlements last year totaling about $13 billion. The claims against Kroger and its competitors have focused on the role of their pharmacies in flooding communities with legal painkillers. Why It Matters: Opioid settlement money is funding recovery efforts. Kroger said on Friday that the opioid settlement agreement would not impede the merger.

People walk near an Apple logo outside its store in Shanghai, China September 8, 2023. The stock appeared to stabilize in out-of-hours trade on Friday and Morgan Stanley analysts claimed China's iPhone bans would at most hit Apple revenues by about 4%. The upshot was the rates market calmed a bit - with the odds on another Fed hike in the cycle falling back below 50% despite the red hot jobless claims readout. That helped Treasury yields <US10YT+RR> fall back too, aided by the stock market wobble and an oil price coming off the boil. The stock exchange there halted trading in both securities and derivatives markets due to a black rainstorm warning.
