CVS also cut its unadjusted earnings guidance to a range of $4.95 to $5.20 per share, down from at least $5.64 per share. Myanmar’s junta has lost communications with senior officers at a major military base near the Chinese border, in a rare admission of battlefield failure after rebels announced they had taken control of the key regional army headquarters. Junta troops have been unable to contact an undisclosed number of officers at the besieged northeastern regional command, military spokesman Zaw Min Tun said Monday, following weeks of intense fighting in and around the town. “The rapid fall of the Myanmar army’s Northeastern Command makes it fully clear to the ranks of the resistance and to neighboring countries just how weak the Myanmar military has become,” said Jason Tower at the United States Institute of Peace. “For Min Aung Hlaing, the implications are existential,” he said, referring to the embattled junta chief. “We will also continue to fight as allies until the military falls,” said the statement from the Kachin, Karen and Chin groups.

LONDON — As a global market sell off continues amid fears of a looming U.S. recession, the Federal Reserve may have little room for manoeuvre, investor Cole Smead warned Monday. "The Fed is trying to fight a ghost in some respects. But it's a fiscal problem, and that fiscal problem's not ending," he said. The CBOE Volatility Index, also know as the "VIX" — a measure of expected market volatility — jumped to 41.65, according to LSEG data, hitting its highest level since October 2020, as risk fears returned to the market. "Whoever comes in, be it Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, there's going to be an interest in trying to prop up anything," he said.

The United States spent $43 billion annually on screening to prevent five cancers, according to one of the most comprehensive estimates of medically recommended cancer testing ever produced. The analysis, published on Monday in The Annals of Internal Medicine and based on data for the year 2021, shows that cancer screening makes up a substantial proportion of what is spent every year on cancer in the United States, which most likely exceeds $250 billion. The researchers focused their estimate on breast, cervical, colorectal, lung and prostate cancers, and found that more than 88 percent of screening was paid for by private insurance and the rest mostly by government programs. For Karen E. Knudsen, the chief executive of the American Cancer Society, the value of screening for the cancers is clear. It’s the right thing to do for individuals.”

The rise in violent weather events over the past few years are driving a decline in real estate values in Texas, Florida, and Louisiana, according to a recent note from Capital Economics. Related storiesAccording to data from MSCI, insurance costs in Florida have more than doubled from less than 2% of income receivable in 2017 to 4.5% at the end of 2023. And those higher costs have ultimately helped drag down property values in impacted regions, especially in the multifamily sector. Capital EconomicsBut there has been a sign of hope in that the rate of growth in insurance costs appears to have peaked, according to Pattison. But she says the ongoing trend of violent weather could still exacerbate the issue in the future, further driving real estate values down in the most impacted regions.

Homeowners on tracker mortgages, which follow the Bank's base rate, will be the first to benefit from the savings. Barclays , Santander, Metro Bank, Lloyds , Halifax, Nationwide and HSBC all cut repayments costs by 25 basis points shortly after the BOE's announcement. Those on standard variable rates, which typically take effect once a borrower's tracker or fixed rate deal ends, will also see savings. Given their more volatile nature, tracker and SVR mortgages remain a relatively niche part of the U.K. mortgage market. However, analysts suggest it may not be long until reductions feed through to the 6.93 million households on fixed rate mortgages.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks on Day 4 of the Republican National Convention (RNC), at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S., July 18, 2024. Donald Trump is set to field reporters' questions at the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, as he re-tools his presidential campaign to combat his likely rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. The Republican nominee's Q&A before a live convention audience is expected to focus on the biggest issues facing the Black community, NABJ said. The event gives Trump, who won just 12% of Black voters in his 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden, an opportunity to directly appeal to voters of color. The decision by NABJ, the nation's largest association of journalists of color, to host Trump quickly spurred a backlash both inside and outside the group.

The Basic Income Guaranteed: Los Angeles Economic Assistance Pilot, or BIG:LEAP, gave over 3,200 households $1,000 in monthly no-strings-attached cash payments for 12 months starting in January 2022. BIG:LEAP compared the outcomes of households receiving cash payments to nearly 5,000 households with similar incomes and family situations in the control group. In the last six months, participants were more likely to establish proximate safety and work toward protecting themselves in the future. Overall, it stands in contrast to what some critics of basic income argue, including that cash payments majorly reduce employment or don't prepare participants for the future. Housing cost burdens decreased among all study participants.
