Likely voters in Georgia divide 48% for Trump to 47% for Harris, and in North Carolina, Harris stands at 48% to Trump’s 47%. North Carolina, which narrowly supported Barack Obama in 2008, has voted Republican in the past three presidential elections. While the polls find similar political environments in Georgia and North Carolina overall, there are some significant differences. In both states, Harris leads among Black likely voters (84% to 13% in Georgia, 78% to 19% in North Carolina) and voters with college degrees (55% to 39% in Georgia, 53% to 42% in North Carolina). Interviews were conducted October 23-28, 2024, online and by telephone with registered voters, including 732 voters in Georgia and 750 in North Carolina.

Although sentiment is improving (more on that soon), poll after poll suggests that Americans hold largely negative views about the US economy. And the US economy remains a job-creation machine, adding 368,000 jobs per month on average during the Biden administration, a record high. But they’re still growing at a 3.9% adjusted rate, according to the Department of Labor. A recent study from the Brookings Institution, released last week, found a correlation between economic sentiment and political affiliation with the party in control of the White House. When Trump took office, Republican economic sentiment surged, while Democratic sentiment cratered.

North Korea fighting alongside Russia would be a serious escalation to the Ukraine war. Experts criticized a lack of decisive Western strategy in countering the threat. AdvertisementWestern allies have options to react to the threat of North Korean troops in Russia, but are hamstrung by fears of escalation, military experts told Business Insider. The fact that now a serious escalation looks possible thanks to North Korea is an indication of the failure of that policy, Hunter told BI. Western states are likely to have been quietly hoping that China might step in diplomatically and dissuade North Korea, Hunter said.

The Bristol Myers Squibb research and development center at Cambridge Crossing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US, on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023. Bristol Myers Squibb on Thursday reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that blew past Wall Street's expectations thanks to its blockbuster blood thinner Eliquis and a portfolio of drugs it expects to deliver long-term growth. Bristol Myers previously said it expected sales to rise in the "upper end" of the low single-digit range. The results come as Bristol Myers moves to cut $1.5 billion in costs by 2025 and funnel that money into key drug brands and research and development programs. Notably, the Food and Drug Administration approved Bristol Myers Squibb's highly anticipated schizophrenia drug Cobenfy during the quarter.

As a former acting U.S. trade representative who also served on the National Security Council, I’ve engaged in international economic policymaking firsthand. Trump’s main economic idea is to indiscriminately impose tariffs on U.S. trading partners, but it is American importers, exporters and consumers who will pay the price. When Trump last levied tariffs, the EU, Canada, China and other trading partners imposed their own tariffs in retaliation. While President Joe Biden left most of Trump’s tariffs against China in place, he managed to negotiate agreements that led to the easing of many retaliatory measures. As president, Harris would lead an economy that helps everyone, not just those at the very top.

“I have a plan and strategy,” Ivan Raiklin, a former Green Beret and political operative who has close ties to associates of Trump, told a group of Pennsylvania activists earlier this month. Four years ago, Trump’s unsuccessful efforts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden didn’t truly materialize until after the election. Brian Snyder/ReutersBut this time around, MAGA activists have been planning to undermine a potential Harris victory well in advance of the election, with some even arguing that state legislators should simply ignore the election results and award electoral votes to Trump by default. “Those looking to overturn the election are way ahead of where they were in 2020,” said Harris. Trump himself has echoed some of the conspiracy theories pushed by his supporters, suggesting that election fraud is rampant in 2024.

Election officials in pivotal battleground states including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Arizona have all tried – and largely failed – to fact-check Musk in real time. Election officials say they are simply outmatched up against Musk’s followers and the X algorithm. “Election officials, they have a very hard job – their job is to be election officials not to be Tweeters,” said Renée DiResta, an expert in disinformation and an associate research professor at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. Election officials in Pennsylvania are similarly attempting to fact-check Musk’s false claims on X but acknowledge those efforts are unlikely to stymie the spread of election lies. In Georgia, election officials see little point in trying to engage with Musk directly, instead turning to the method they relied on in 2020 to beat back misinformation: Regular press conferences with election officials rebutting the latest election falsehoods.

It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done.”The White House quickly insisted that Biden was not calling Trump's supporters "garbage." Biden's comments offered a welcome distraction for Trump, who had been facing heavy criticism for the Garden event, which was packed with a series of crude and racist comments. The move could prompt legal challenges, as a similar policy did in the first Trump administration. To pressure local law enforcement agencies to cooperate, the Trump team would cut off their access to Justice Department grants, the three sources said. After an appeals court sided with the Trump administration, the Democratic-controlled states appealed to the Supreme Court. And that legal maneuver, in essence, ran out the clock on the first Trump administration. In 2020, election week replaced election night: Joe Biden wasn’t declared the winner until Saturday. The truth is the Decision Desk cannot know until election night which scenario will unfold, regardless of how carefully we have analyzed the polls, early vote, and other election-related data. One thing is clear: The days of projecting a winner on election night itself are almost certainly over. North Carolina has a similar pattern in how it reports out the vote, with 99% of the vote counted by midnight in past elections. Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday distanced herself from President Joe Biden’s comments that seemingly referred to Donald Trump’s supporters as “garbage,” setting off a political firestorm a week before Election Day. “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said, pausing for a moment before continuing. Harris’ campaign was quick to try to publicly defend or explain those remarks publicly. As CNN has reported, there had been growing wariness among Harris campaign aides about Biden’s propensity for gaffes, at a moment when the campaign does not want to take any unnecessary political risks. Tuesday night’s “garbage” comments from Biden only ended up confirming those existing concerns for many Democrats.

Harris plays cleanup on Biden 'garbage' comment

Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday distanced herself from President Joe Biden's controversial comment that appeared to label supporters of former President Donald Trump as "garbage." Harris also said that Biden had "clarified" the comment he made Tuesday. "Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a 'floating island of garbage,'" Biden said on the call. In this version, it seemed that Biden was saying the "garbage" was Hinchcliffe's demonization of Latinos, not Trump supporters. In 2020, Biden beat Trump in the state by fewer than 81,000 votes, a margin of less than 1.2%.

Biden mentioned Puerto Rico, slandered as a “floating island of garbage” by a comedian at Trump’s event on Sunday night. “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said, pausing for a moment before continuing. She’s now almost certain to be asked whether she also regards Trump’s backers as “garbage.” Her answer will only prolong the story. In a neck-and-neck race that may be decided by mere thousands of votes in swing states, neither Harris nor Trump can afford mistakes. And as CNN reported on Tuesday, his gaffes have caused responses – from eyerolls to outright anger – from some Harris campaign aides.
