Image This year’s women’s race was oddly slow until the last few miles. Tola had arrived in New York with questions about his fitness after he dropped out of the marathon at the world championships in Budapest this summer. When she made her marathon debut in New York last year, she went out fast before struggling to a sixth-place finish. “Sometimes,” Obiri said, “you learn from your mistakes.”She put those lessons to use in Boston earlier this year when she won her first world marathon major. By then, only Obiri, Gidey, Lokedi and two others — Viola Cheptoo, the runner-up in 2021, and Brigid Kosgei, a five-time world marathon major champion — were still in contention.

The Earth Is Warming, but Is CO2 the Cause?

Journal Editorial Report: Paul Gigot Interviews Bjorn Lomborg. Images: AP/EPA Composite: Mark KellyIf this column has ever plagiarized itself, it’s by repeating the phrase “evidence of warming is not evidence of what causes warming.” A paper published by the Norwegian government’s statistical agency, written by two of its retired experts, touching on this very subject has called forth so many shrieked accusations of climate apostasy that you know it must be interesting. The authors ask a simple question: Are computerized climate simulations a sufficient basis for attributing observed warming to human CO2? After all, the Earth’s climate has been subject to substantial warming and cooling trends for millennia that remain unexplained and can’t be attributed to fossil fuels. As statisticians, their conclusion: “With the current level of knowledge, it seems impossible to determine how much of the temperature increase is due to emissions of CO2.”

For more than a year, the Environmental Protection Agency investigated whether Louisiana officials discriminated against Black residents by putting them at increased cancer risk. As attorney general, Landry fought the EPA’s investigation. Health officials, for example, wanted the unilateral power to decide if and when they had to do the EPA-proposed analysis. The AP reviewed a draft agreement edited by state health officials and sent to EPA in May, reflecting negotiations at the time. It has not reviewed any draft agreement that would show what Louisiana's environmental agency might have been willing to accept.

That's why more than 50 local officials signed onto a letter Tuesday calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to help municipal governments cut food waste in their communities. Tackling food waste is a daunting challenge that the U.S. has taken on before. In 2015, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the EPA set a goal of cutting food waste in half by 2030, but the country has made little progress, said Claudia Fabiano, who works on food waste management for the EPA. Researchers say households are responsible for at least 40% of food waste in the U.S. Chicago, for instance, just launched a city-wide composting pilot program two weeks ago that set up free food waste drop-off points around the city.

Destruction in northern Gaza after Israeli airstrikes is pictured on October 28. Catch up below on the latest developments in the war:Israel's goals in this stage: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Saturday the war in Gaza is "going to be long." Both those raids saw ground forces withdraw after a few hours. More than 2 million people live in the enclave, and for weeks people in the territory have faced Israeli airstrikes and a growing humanitarian situation, with shortages of water, food and fuel. I’m worried about their safety.” Several United Nations agencies have also reported losing contact with their local staff in Gaza.

However, it does not appear as though any major ground offensive aimed at seizing and holding significant amounts of the territory is yet underway. Hamas’ initial surprise attacks on Israel earlier in the month killed more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians. In its Saturday statement, the UN added that a ceasefire could facilitate the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Saudi Arabia “condemns and denounces any ground incursions” by Israeli forces into Gaza due to the impact on civilians, the country’s Foreign Ministry wrote in a Saturday statement. Citing the UN resolution calling for a humanitarian truce, Abbas said Israel responded “with more bombing and destruction.”This story is developing and is being updated.

Bernstein said he is hopeful “that as we remove lead pipes, we’re going to see the numbers continue to fall. “CDC’s work was used in other cities with elevated water lead levels to dampen citizen concerns,” the congressional report said. Joe Cotruvo, a former director of the Drinking Water Standards Division at EPA, said the existing regulations work and should be credited with significantly reducing lead in drinking water, they just aren’t properly enforced. Lead pipes in both cities were rapidly removed and lead levels dropped.

Google has bet big on AI as it tries to catch up to Amazon and Microsoft in the lucrative cloud-computing market. Photo: john g mabanglo/EPA/ShutterstockGoogle agreed to invest up to $2 billion in Anthropic, building on its earlier investment in the artificial-intelligence company and adding fuel to the race between startups trying to achieve the next big breakthrough in the emerging technology. Google invested $500 million upfront into the OpenAI rival and agreed to add $1.5 billion more over time, people familiar with the matter said. The investment follows a separate commitment Amazon made last month to invest $4 billion in the company, which was founded by former OpenAI engineers in 2021 with the goal of developing rival generative AI models.

Ford Pays Dearly for Labor Peace With the UAW

Journal Editorial Report: Paul Gigot Interviews Bjorn Lomborg. Images: AP/EPA Composite: Mark KellyPresident Biden praised what he called the “historic tentative agreement” that the United Auto Workers and Ford struck late Wednesday as a testament to collective bargaining. Perhaps, but the real test will be whether Ford can stay competitive, especially amid the government-forced electric-vehicle transition. UAW President Shawn Fain ’s strategy of staging strikes at select plants operated by all three Detroit auto makers appears to be paying off. The union was threatening to call off workers at a factory that builds Ford’s highly profitable F-150 pickup when the auto maker agreed to a generous deal that ends the nearly six-week walkout.

Mike Whitaker sailed through a confirmation hearing earlier this month, a contrast to the experience of President Biden’s previous nominee. Photo: Michael Reynolds/EPA/ShutterstockThe U.S. Senate confirmed President Biden’s pick to head the Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday, giving the air-safety regulator its first permanent leader in more than 18 months. Mike Whitaker , who previously served as deputy FAA administrator during the Obama administration, will confront a slew of problems—from short-staffed air-traffic control to outdated technology and heightened safety worries after a spate of close calls at U.S. airports earlier this year.

Tesla faces Justice Department probe of range claim
  + stars: | 2023-10-25 | by ( Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —The Justice Department is investigating whether or not Tesla cars can live up to the EPA’s official estimates of how far they can go on a single charge. But Consumer Reports has conducted tests that it said shows Tesla vehicles fall well short of the advertised range, no matter the weather. The organization conducted its own range tests on the Tesla Model Y as well as the Volkswagen ID.4, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The ID.4 and Mach-E both did slightly better than claimed in warm weather, the Ioniq 5 got within two miles of the claim of a 256-mile range. It went 274 miles in warm weather in the Consumer Reports test, compared to the official EPA stated range of 326 miles.

Chevron Bets on Peak Green Energy
  + stars: | 2023-10-24 | by ( The Editorial Board | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Images: AP/EPA Composite: Mark KellyThe climate lobby’s pronouncements that the end of fossil fuels is nigh appear as premature as warnings two decades ago that supply would soon run out. Chevron on Monday announced a $53 billion bid for Hess Corp. because it knows the world will need oil and gas for the foreseeable future no matter how much politicians subsidize green energy. Chevron’s Hess acquisition comes on the heels of Exxon Mobil ’s $60 billion tie-up with Pioneer National Resources this month. Higher interest rates are prompting consolidation across the U.S. economy, as smaller, less-capitalized companies struggle to borrow. Oil and gas giants are flush with cash owing to the run-up in prices over the past two years.
