The moderate West Virginia Democrat said Wednesday that he would never want to be a “spoiler” who contributed to getting any other candidate elected. Manchin said it would be “dangerous” to give Trump another term. “Because I Endorsed Big Jim Justice of West Virginia for the U.S. Senate, and he has taken a commanding lead, Democrat Joe Manchin has decided not to seek re-election. Manchin would have had a difficult path to reelection as the only remaining Democratic statewide officeholder in West Virginia, likely running against either GOP U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney or Gov. But it appeared to take Fox News' Trey Gowdy, a former GOP congressman who hosted Scott on his show Sunday, by surprise. "The voters, who are the most remarkable people on the planet, … they’re telling me, ‘Not now, Tim.’ I don’t think they’re saying, Trey, ‘no,’ but I do [think] they’re saying ‘not now,’” Scott said. But while Scott technically spoke the most during that debate, his quiet message was drowned out by others. After last Tuesday's debate, Scott brought his girlfriend of one year up to the stage, and the two briefly held hands while candidates' families mingled. “I’ll be honest with you, I ran for president to be president.

CNN —Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina is suspending his presidential campaign, he announced in an interview with Fox News on Sunday. “Tim ran an optimistic, hopeful message — but that’s not where the Republican base is right now,” a Republican official who supported Scott told CNN. Scott said he has no intention of accepting a vice presidential nomination, reaffirming a position he repeated frequently on the campaign trail. The South Carolina senator entered the race with a major cash advantage after he converted his Senate campaign account into a presidential fund. He held the seat for more than a decade before his election to the South Carolina House in 2008.

Manchin never defended the remark but was criticized by West Virginia Republicans for what his party’s nominee said. By 2022, coal mining employees in West Virginia made up nearly 30% of all coal employees in the country. John Deskins, director of the West Virginia University Bureau of Business and Economic Research, said 75% of West Virginia’s coal jobs were disappearing before coal production dropped because of mechanization. West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin said Trump never fulfilled his promise. Senator Joe Manchin, a maverick who has often bucked party leadership in the past two years, said on Thursday that he will not seek re-election, hurting Democrats' chance of defending their thin Senate majority in the 2024 election. The move by the 76-year-old lawmaker will make it very difficult for Democrats to defend his West Virginia seat. "We like our odds in West Virginia," Senator Steve Daines, the head of Republican senators' campaign arm, said in a statement. David Bergstein, a spokesperson for the Senate Democrats' campaign arm, said the party was confident in its chances of strengthening its majority. Manchin has insisted that his only motivation is the coal-producing state of West Virginia and an eye on fiscal responsibility.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Democratic Sen. Deon Tedder won a special election for the open Senate seat on Tuesday, picking up more than 81% of the votes to defeat Republican Rosa Kay, according to results compiled by the South Carolina Election Commission. Tedder will be sworn in when the Senate's regular session begins in January and at 33, he will be the youngest senator by nearly five years. Gillard had received 47% of the vote in the primary, but South Carolina requires a majority to win the nomination. Tedder won 39%.

Some of them are imprinted with the text of the Second Amendment, others a rallying cry: “We fight fascists.” Among the most eye-catching is an ad for N.R.A. memberships, with its promise of “$5,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance.”But what about intentional deaths? “Watch Night,” a new multigenre hybrid show, is interested in those, specifically the ones fueled by homegrown prejudice. He wrote the libretto for “We Shall Not Be Moved” (2017), an opera inspired by the police bombing in 1985 of a Philadelphia house occupied by Black activists, with an artistic team that included Jones and Lauren Whitehead, the “Watch Night” dramaturg. Mr. Scott, who grew up idolizing professional wrestlers, looked the part of the fan favorite on his way to the ring. “I am a huge fan of America,” Mr. Scott, 58, the Senate’s only Black Republican, said. “We are the greatest country on God’s green earth.”He delivered this message to an almost entirely older, white group. But there was a time when Mr. Scott represented the possibility that Republicans could draw a more diverse crowd. Early in his political career, Mr. Scott stirred excitement among South Carolina’s Republican establishment, which anointed him a rising star who could help broaden the party’s appeal to Black voters.

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA - SEPTEMBER 22: The container ship Maersk Bogor is guided by a tugboat as it prepares to enter the Miraflores locks while transiting the Panama Canal on September 22, 2023 in Panama City, Panama. The Panama Canal Authority is continuing to restrict the number of vessels that pass through the Panama Canal locks as drought has caused water levels at Gatun Lake to drop. Over one hundred ships are waiting to transit the canal and the backup could delay goods heading to the United States for the holiday season. The Panama Canal is popular for East Coast trade because it is faster than other options. Traveling through the Panama Canal takes only 35 days.

DETROIT (AP) — Pressure in rising on General Motors as the lone holdout in a strike targeting all three big Detroit automakers after a tentative contract agreement with Jeep maker Stellantis was reached with the United Auto Workers union over the weekend. The Ford agreement revives cost-of-living adjustments that the UAW agreed to suspend in 2009 during the Great Recession. At Stellantis, workers get cost-of-living pay that would bring raises to a compounded 33%, with top assembly plant workers making more than $42 per hour. Overnight, 8,200 Stellantis workers in Canada represented by a different union, Unifor, walked off the job. At the peak, about 46,000 UAW workers were on strike — about one-third of the union’s 146,000 members at all three companies.

(The church discourages these stories; a plaque on the grounds reads: “The only ghost at St. Philip’s is the Holy Ghost.”)Leaving race out of any history is a striking blind spot — even in a ghost tour. Born into slavery, Vesey had purchased his freedom in 1799 after winning a lottery, and became a prosperous carpenter. Some websites will tell you to look for Vesey’s ghost at the Old Charleston Jail, a structure that’s stood since 1802. DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union has widened its strike against General Motors, the lone holdout among the three Detroit automakers, after reaching a tentative contract agreement with Jeep maker Stellantis. About 14,000 UAW workers had been on strike at two Stellantis assembly plants in Michigan and Ohio, and several parts distribution centers across the country. Workers also will get cost-of-living pay that would bring the raises to a compounded 33%, with top assembly plant workers making more than $42 per hour. Historically, political realignment has occurred when groups of voters change their affiliation to a new political party or candidate, especially around presidential and midterm elections. Yet the period between 1852 and 1860 is crucial here, for it saw the last time a major political party collapsed (the Whig Party in 1854) and the dissolution of another political party (the Democratic Party in 1860). The 1924 Democratic Party famously went through 103 ballots before agreeing on a compromise candidate, John W. Davis of West Virginia. Of course, party realignment is a tricky thing since we only come to know that it has happened in hindsight. A failure to reach a majority consensus signals the doom of an American political party.

Chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan got an inside look at what it's like on the first day for new freshmen, known as knobs, at the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. Matriculation day marks the beginning of the knobs' seven-month journey to joining the South Carolina Corps of Cadets at the Citadel, one of the oldest public senior military colleges in the US, which has been at the center of controversy for decades because of allegations of racism, sexism, and hazing and its historical ties to the Confederacy. After saying goodbye to their families, the knobs encounter a group of upperclassmen tasked with leading the new class during matriculation. Despite the school's complicated past, we saw some cadets making progress toward changing the Citadel's culture in real time.
