In that light, the Fed's interest rate hiking cycle is close to an end. That is still well above the Fed's target, but the speed and direction of travel since June's four-decade high of 9.1% is clear. U.S. breakeven inflation rates - the gap between yields on inflation-protected Treasuries and regular notes - reflect this. The two-year breakeven inflation rate this week fell as low as 2.02%, the lowest since December 2020. This will drive down the average inflation rate, whatever the time horizon.

Dollar slips near seven-month lows after jobs data

But, with consumer inflation data due later this week, it's the outlook for price pressures that is still front and centre for investors. The dollar index , which measures the U.S. dollar against six major currencies, was last down 0.1% at 103.62, having fallen 1.15% on Friday as investors shifted into riskier assets. However, the labour market is still tight and likely to deter the Fed from slowing down any time soon, analysts said. The Japanese yen was the outlier among the major currencies, easing 0.2% to 132.33 per dollar. Optimism over a swift economic recovery sent China's offshore yuan towards five-month highs against the dollar on Monday.
The data is important since the Fed has been trying to slow the hot labor market in its fight against inflation. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones also expect that the unemployment rate remained at 3.7% in December, while average hourly wage growth slowed to 0.4% from 0.6% in November. "Their forecast has the unemployment rate rising. "If you need the unemployment rate to rise, you need jobs to fall below 70,000 to 100,000." The Fed has raised interest rates seven times since last March, and the fed funds rate is now at 4.25% to 4.5%.

LONDON, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Euro zone business activity contracted less than initially thought at the end of last year as price pressures eased, according to a survey which suggested the bloc's recession may not be as deep as expected. S&P Global's final composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for the euro zone, seen as a good gauge of economic health, rose to 49.3 in December from November's 47.8, above a preliminary estimate of 48.8. "Nevertheless, there is little evidence across the survey results to suggest the euro zone economy may return to meaningful and stable growth any time soon." Overall demand declined for a sixth straight month, albeit at a shallower pace than initially thought. The PMI new business index bounced to 47.0 from 45.8, comfortably above the 46.5 flash estimate.

Next week brings a raft of major central bank decisions, including those from the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England. The key question for traders and investors is whether inflation has reached a peak, giving policymakers more scope to deliver smaller interest-rate rises over the coming months. [1/2] Global airline industry body International Air Transport Association (IATA) Director General Willie Walsh attends an interview with Reuters in Doha, Qatar, June 19, 2022. Airlines lost tens of billions of dollars in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, but air travel has partially recovered and some airports have struggled to cope. DOWNSIDE RISKIATA believes global air traffic levels will return to pre-COVID or 2019 levels by 2024, led by the United States and with Asia-Pacific "notably lagging." If China does not loosen restrictions, airlines' profitability would be affected. Walsh said airlines had survived the worst of the downturns, though Europe's fragmented market remained an area to watch.

Amazon's Alexa was Jeff Bezos' pet project; now it's a target for the company's cost-cutting. The Amazon Echo debuted in 2014 and was the company's first real success as a hardware manufacturer. The stand-alone voice assistant was immediately useful, and by 2018, the company sold more than 100 million Alexa-enabled devices. It even licensed the Alexa voice assistant to other manufacturers, hoping to make the assistant ubiquitous throughout people's homes. But as Amazon faces a new era of cost discipline, a "glorified clock radio" can't lose $10 billion a year or employ 10,000 people.
In a surprise move, the Canadian government said earlier this month that it had decided to cease issuance of real return bonds (RRBs), citing low demand. That makes them an expensive form of financing for the government, but cost should not be the only consideration, investors say. The median allocation by defined benefit pension plans, a major category, to RRBs was 5.2% in 2021, data covering members of the Pension Investment Association of Canada (PIAC) shows. U.S. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) could act as a proxy but are not an exact hedge against Canadian inflation. Shares of DraftKings could surge 40% from their current level, according to Piper Sandler. Analyst Matt Farrell initiated research coverage of DraftKings with an overweight rating, saying it's time for investors to take another look at the online sports betting company. Because of those concerns, shares of DraftKings tumbled more than 45% this year. Still, Piper expects that DraftKings has a "clear and repeatable" path to profitability, as the company targets fourth quarter 2023 as a breakeven point, based on 2023 adjusted EBITDA estimates, according to the note. "Overall, we recommend investors own DraftKings for exposure to the rapidly growing online sports betting and iGaming markets," Farrell wrote.

Overall group revenue grew 17% to $3.2 billion in the quarter, beating analyst estimates. Sea is now working toward achieving Shopee’s adjusted EBITDA breakeven by the end of 2023. The improvements will shore up support for its decision to remain in Brazil, a big emerging market.
The Producer Price Index measures inflation at the firm level, showing the change in prices paid for the supplies, materials and services that businesses use, and for the final goods that retailers resell. Prices for final goods less volatile commodities and shipping costs rose 0.2% in October, continuing a slow pace for those "core" items. The model shows the Fed rate now rising only to 4.75%-5.00% in March, whereas a week ago it showed the Fed rate likely exceeding 5% by then. The breakeven-inflation rate on the 5-year Treasury Inflation Protected Security slid to the lowest in a month at 2.38%. Shepherdson has been focused on the producer price index as more important than usual because of market distortions driven by the pandemic, and said that a drop in the index's margin components would influence the direction of consumer prices going forward.

However, bitcoin futures are also financially settled, meaning there is no bitcoin that changes hands or is held in an account. He added that the roll costs for bitcoin futures have come down sharply since the ETFs launched.
