New York CNN —Trader Joe’s has issued another food recall — its sixth since July. Last week, the chain announced that it’s recalling its Texas Tamale Company Gourmet Black Bean Tamales because they might contain milk allergens. Trader Joe’s said that the tamales with “undeclared milk” were sold in nine states, including Texas, Colorado and New Mexico, with the UPC number 717725000580. Texas Tamale Co. issues a recall for undeclared milk in their black bean tamales. That price difference in 2016 arguably led to the overproduction of U.S. soybeans in the following two years, moderating soybean futures. The bean-corn ratio was also elevated in late 2013, a year which has been frequently compared with 2023, particularly for corn futures. Corn futures were declining at a faster rate than soybeans as U.S. corn supplies recovered significantly from the 2012 drought. 2024 ON HORIZONNext year’s December corn and November soybean futures already indicate heavier U.S. soybean acres for 2024 after declining 4.5% in 2023, hitting a three-year low. Prices were low by early 2015, causing both U.S. corn and soybean acres to contract that year.

The Pro Farmer Crop Tour has been following the same routes in seven major U.S. corn and soybean producing states for more than three decades. Pro Farmer on Friday pegged U.S. corn yield at 172 bushels per acre, below USDA’s 175.1 bpa and the year-ago 173.3. The advisory firm placed soybean yield at 49.7 bpa, below USDA’s 50.9 but above the 2022 yield of 49.5. For the past four years, Pro Farmer’s corn yield has correctly informed on the direction of USDA’s corn yield from August to September, but it had the wrong lean in the two prior years (2017 and 2018). For example, Pro Farmer’s 2022 corn yield suggested USDA’s September 2022 forecast should come in below that of August, and it did.

You can pick up the echo in “Fixer," the haunting second collection of poems from Edgar Kunz. The narrator of these poems bounces from one side hustle to another, each more absurd than the last. In “Model,” he’s paid to pose in jeans at a gas station. In “Shoulder Season,” he’s paid to slice window panes out of massive sheets of glass. I am notany of those things, but I amnot comfortedNo one will accuse Edgar Kunz of being out of step with the zeitgeist.

has a bumper crop!” — AmyIf you find eggplant inedible, either because of its texture or taste, you want recipes that use up as much produce as possible while making it largely undetectable. In Kay Chun’s eggplant and bean chili, eggplant is simmered in a garlicky tomato sauce until it collapses into a chile-spiced ragù. Pairing stewed eggplant with aromatics and protein-packed legumes is a solid strategy: Kay does it again in her recipe for eggplant dal, in which cumin, coriander, garlic, ginger and fresh chile season lentils and eggplant. Bitter eggplant is often undercooked eggplant. And if you’re frustrated with the results of sautéing and baking, try steaming: In about 10 minutes, strips of eggplant are rendered silky in Hetty Lui McKinnon’s recipe for liang ban qie zi, eggplant with garlic, ginger and scallions.

USDA’s August corn and soy yields were the season’s highest in three of the last 10 years, most recently in 2022 for both. Looking toward final yields, the August corn yield has a slight tendency to be too high. Final corn yield was lower than in August in six of the last 10 years and in 10 of the last 15 years. The last two times final corn yield was above the August figure were in 2021 and 2017. USDA’s July corn and soy yields were 177.5 and 52 bpa, respectively, and both would be new records.

But the Crop Watch producers are concerned that this heat could challenge the corn in particular as it continues to fill out kernels. Indiana picked up 2.5 inches last week, western Illinois 2.45 inches, Nebraska up to 1.4 inches, and South Dakota got 1 inch. That ties two other weeks out of the last six for the highest Crop Watch soybean yield prospects of the season so far. Groups connected to the meat industry have said for years that plant-based meats aren't healthy. But it also counters one of the most common criticisms of plant-based meats from the animal meat industry – that these products are highly processed and unhealthy to eat. The Center has ties to the meat industry, according to Fast Company. In its own ads and messaging, the Center said that plant-based meat was "ultra-processed" and that the products posed health risks. The ad comes as Beyond Meat, Impossible, and other plant-based meat makers deal with a slump in sales.

But some of its beans, known as unwashed or 'natural' arabicas, have not previously been used for high-end benchmark coffee contracts around the world. Unwashed coffee is so-called because its fruit is left to dry whole before the bean is extracted. He added that relatively little Brazilian coffee ends up in ICE warehouses because it usually fetches higher prices in the physical markets. The two companies declined to comment on whether they had got a mix of semi-washed and unwashed beans certified by ICE. Zooming out to inflation adjusted terms however, coffee prices in 1980 were equivalent to about $8 per lb - a whopping 500% higher than they are today, according to Reuters calculations.

Tired after eating? Here’s why, and how to fix it

The tendency to get tired after eating isn’t inherently suggestive of something amiss. If you had a meal high in fat — such as fried foods or pizza — that could make you feel tired. “That can really be an energy zapper.”Just like high-sugar foods, sugary drinks can also make you feel tired once the crash hits, Stefanski said. Choosing more balanced meals and snacks can help you feel less tired after eating, experts said. The test measures average blood sugar levels and shows how much glucose is attached to hemoglobin in red blood cells, Stefanski said.

The pace of new-crop U.S. corn and soybean export sales usually starts to increase in July and especially into August. That covers only 8% of USDA’s 2023-24 U.S. corn export forecast of 53.3 million tonnes (2.1 billion bushels), below the five-year average of 13%. New U.S. corn export sales, July 13New-crop soybean sales account for 10% of USDA’s 2023-24 export target of 50.35 million tonnes (1.85 billion bushels). New U.S. soybean export sales, July 13Both of those export outlooks, especially the one for corn, are considered too optimistic by some analysts since cheaper Brazilian supplies are seen increasingly eating in to U.S. export shares. China has purchased 1.87 million tonnes of new-crop U.S. soybeans, the lowest mid-July, non-trade-war-year volume in at least 16 years.

The AI boom is screwing over Gen Z

Now, with the advent of generative AI, organizations are starting to automate many "junior" tasks — stripping away their dubious last attempt to "teach" young employees. America's young workers are headed toward a career calamity. Nobody wants to teach anymoreEven before the rise of AI, young people were facing an early-career crisis. This lack of care is clearly weighing on the young workers who need career development the most. Humans can be enhanced by AI, helped by AI, but replacing them with AI is a shortsighted decision made by myopic bean counters who can't see the value in a person.

Over the last decade, U.S. corn yield in August was lower than in July four times, including the past two years. The recent years with higher August corn yields versus July have featured some sizable moves. The government's corn and soybean yields will rely heavily on survey data next month and field observations will be added in September. Last month was the Midwest’s driest June since 1988, though USDA left U.S. soybean yield untouched from the 52-bpa trendline. August soybean yield has come in lower than in July only twice in the past 10 years (2013, 2021).

It is always risky when all analysts are leaning the same way, though recent weather and the already-lofty nature of the corn yield seem to validate this thinking. However, lower yields may not be printed in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s report on Wednesday. All 25 analysts polled between Reuters and Bloomberg believe this month’s corn yield will come in below USDA’s trend-line of 181.5 bushels per acre. Eight of 25 analysts expect the 52 bpa to stand on Wednesday, though soy yield may be more likely than corn to come in lower this month. That leaves room for corn yield losses on the balance sheet but keeps bean supplies tight either way.
