6:59 a.m.: Citi raises AT & T price target A wave of improving outlook for telecommunications could benefit shares of AT & T , according to Citi. The firm upgraded the telecommunications company to neutral from sell and left its $350 per share price target unchanged. "Although our 2028 EPS is still c16% ahead of consensus, we now see less scope for earnings outperformance 2024/2025," the analyst added. The firm upgraded the home furnishings stock to buy from hold and increased its price target to $156 per share to $148. His price target of $105, down from $122, implies upside of just 8.7% from Tuesday's close.

The tech slide has many investors anxious to buy the dip, but now is the time for caution, some say. Communication services and information technology stocks are the two worst-performing S & P 500 sectors this quarter, after having fallen into a correction from their peaks in July. Communication services is more than 11% off its 52-week high, while information technology is more than 12% off its recent high. For much of this year, any dips in the high-flying tech stocks have proven to be a buying opportunity for investors, as the promise of artificial intelligence has traders unable to stay away from these names for long. Investors were buying the dip again midday through the trading session Tuesday.

Then on July 11, things really got started as June CPI came in below expectations and the outlook for the first Fed rate cut became significantly more likely. Let's drill down into the sectors that makeup the Russell 2000 to see who's leading and lagging since that July 5th turning point. Let's find out who is actually profitable and could maintain the rally after the initial shine of a fresh rate cut wears off. Where to look in small caps A big component of the Russell 2000 based on market capitalization representation is health care at 18.7%. Should the Fed strike a dovish tone after the first rate cut I will be shopping for quality names.

David Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs, during an interview for an episode of "The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations" in New York on Aug. 6, 2024. Goldman Sachs will post a roughly $400 million pretax hit to third-quarter results as the bank continues to unwind its ill-fated consumer business. CEO David Solomon said Monday at a conference that by unloading Goldman's GM Card business, as well as a separate portfolio of loans, the bank would post a hit to revenues when it reports results next month. It is the latest turbulence related to Solomon's push into consumer retail. Goldman's credit card business, in particular its Apple Card, allowed rapid growth in retail lending, but also led to losses and friction with regulators.

The U.S. Federal Reserve can afford to make a jumbo 50 basis point rate cut next week without spooking markets, an analyst has suggested, as opinion on the central bank's forthcoming meeting remains hotly divided. "I would not be surprised if they jumped all the way to 50 basis points," Yoshikami told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe." "That would be considered, on one hand, a very positive sign the Fed is doing what is needed to support jobs growth," he said. "I think the Fed at this point is ready to get out ahead of this." His comment follow similar remarks Friday from Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who said the Fed should deliver a half-point interest rate cut at its next meeting, contending that it went "too far, too fast" with its previous policy tightening.

Slowing rate of change in earnings growth There are two important trends to follow in earnings. In the case of Nvidia, earnings are continuing to increase, but the rate of change is decelerating. This earnings report will likely be the final time in this stretch that Nvidia will see triple-digit earnings growth. But the impact has been shrinking – just as the overall Mag 7 impact has been diminishing with second quarter earnings growth broadening out. Last season (Q1), Nvidia was responsible for a little more than one-third of the S & P 500's 8% earnings growth.

There's still time to boost 401(k) contributions and max out your plan account for 2024, but not everyone should, according to financial advisors. For 2024, employees can defer up to $23,000 into 401(k) plans, up from $22,500 in 2023, with an extra $7,500 for workers age 50 and older. Some 14% of investors maxed out their 401(k) employee deferrals in 2023, according to a 2024 report from Vanguard. Meanwhile, the average 401(k) savings rate in 2023 — including employee deferrals and company contributions — was an estimated 11.7%, which matched a record high from 2022, the same Vanguard report found. If you can afford to go further and max out your 401(k) for 2024, here are three things to consider first, experts say.

The team then tracked the prices of the recommended stocks from the day the videos were posted up until June 21, 2024. The most profit that an investor could have generated from a single stock would have been Nvidia, which grew 63.08% in the period surveyed. If a person invested $1,000 in every stock recommended in the one video that got the most bets right, the gains would have amounted to $4,860. On the other hand, putting money into all the stocks recommended in the video that got most bets wrong would have led to a loss of $1,517. "Furthermore, a single period coincident result does not translate to a definitive conclusion of predictability in the long run."

Swiss banking giant UBS on Wednesday smashed net profit expectations for the second quarter, as revenue came in higher than expected. Net profit attributable to shareholders came in at $1.136 billion for the period, versus a company-compiled consensus forecast of $528 million. UBS had swung back to profit in the first quarter after two quarterly losses, but it warned that its net interest income would fall in both its global wealth management and its personal and corporate banking divisions.
