“What he has said is that we would like ultimately there to only be voting on Election Day. Republican attorneys have filed an assortment of lawsuits across the county that vary in both what types of election rules they target and how seriously election law experts believe the case should be taken. The legal fight against mail voting has taken GOP lawyers to states beyond the typical presidential battlegrounds. In addition to the case targeting Mississippi’s post-election day mail ballot receipt deadline, Republicans filed a lawsuit challenging the major expansion of mail voting enacted by New York lawmakers last year. To arrive at the claim that the states’ voter rolls are bloated, Republicans are using a formula that has previously been rebuked in federal court.

Two months ago, I wrote a story entitled, "The IPO market is looking very shaky and facing challenges galore." Two months later, the IPO market is still shaky, but there are definite signs of improvement. Second, three $100 million IPOs have filed to go public in the past week, including Viking (the cruise line operator) and Rubrik, a data management platform. Greg Martin at Rainmaker Securities told me that the recent performance of Reddit and Astera Labs, "Were nice shots in the arm for the IPO market. Why Oil Prices Have Been Rising Recently
  + stars: | 2024-04-09 | by ( Stanley Reed | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Oil prices have climbed in recent weeks, spurred by concerns over supplies and geopolitical risks, including wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, has risen more than 20 percent since mid-December. Rising oil prices could make efforts by central banks to reduce inflation more challenging. Market watchers note that a short-term retreat in prices, after such a rapid rise, is also possible. The oil price also remains below the peaks reached in 2022, when prices jumped well above $100 a barrel.

The latest rumbling from the latter camp have pointed out that stocks look overvalued by the standards of none other than Warren Buffett. The so-called Buffett indicator compares the total market capitalization (share prices times outstanding shares) of all U.S. stocks with the quarterly output of the U.S. economy. Things are in normal territory if the total value of the Wilshire 5000 index (which measures the total market) is about on par with the latest quarterly GDP estimate. Stocks trading at about double the size of the economy is considered a major red flag. "If we're comparing a bubble to the late 90s and early 2000s, no this is not a bubble," she says.

So, I contacted Babak Tafreshi, a National Geographic photographer who has been snapping eclipse shots for 30 years. For photos of the partial eclipse, I used my iPhone camera, which I protected with a spare pair of eclipse glasses. One of my iPhone shots of the partial solar eclipse. Manual settings offer the dexterity you need to transition from photographing the partial eclipse to totality. Noting a number of potential upside risks to inflation, Bowman said policymakers need to be careful not to ease policy too quickly. "Reducing our policy rate too soon or too quickly could result in a rebound in inflation, requiring further future policy rate increases to return inflation to 2 percent over the longer run." The speech, to the Shadow Open Market Committee, comes with markets on edge about the near-term future of Fed policy. Weighing inflation risks, she said that supply-side improvements that helped bring numbers down this year may not have the same impact going forward. Fed officials will get their next look at inflation data Wednesday, when the Labor Department releases the March consumer price index report.

During the total solar eclipse on April 8th, the fiery green "Devil comet" could be visible too. The timing offers a rare opportunity to simultaneously see a comet and a total solar eclipse. For the first time in 71 years, Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, a.k.a the "Mother of Dragons" or "Devil comet," is coming relatively close to the sun. Time will pass quickly, and there are plenty of other spectacular phenomena to watch for during the event, besides the Devil comet. The longer it takes for Cannon to decide these issues, the more likely a trial would need to wait until after the November presidential election. But Cannon’s critics view the pace of the Trump prosecution with added suspicion because of how she handled a separate, 2022 lawsuit Trump brought attacking the FBI’s documents investigation. In that lawsuit, Cannon granted an extraordinary Trump request for a third-party review of the FBI’s 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago resort for the classified documents. Now, critics accuse Cannon of – purposely or not – playing into Trump’s strategy of delaying the trial until after the election. Hours after the hearing, Cannon rejected Trump’s first claim, that the national defense law he is charged under was too vague.

ISW emphasized that Russia is benefitting from Western countries that continuously withhold crucial weapons from Ukraine that can significantly incapacitate it. And even though gold prices are at an all-time high, many market watchers are still taking a shine to it. But even with a favorable outlook, gold should play a very different role in your portfolio than stocks or bonds, investing experts say. Why gold is up and could continue to riseDifferent investors cite different reasons for owning gold. In addition to a rising tide, a weakening U.S. dollar and falling bond rates have boosted gold prices of late, says Hayes. At lower rates, bonds and cash accounts "have less of a competitive advantage" over gold, he tells CNBC Make It.

Gold prices extended their rally and scaled to another record high on Monday, propelled by U.S. interest rate cut expectations and the metal's appeal as a safe haven asset. "I think it's a really exciting moment in gold," said Joseph Cavatoni, market strategist at the World Gold Council told CNBC on Monday. "What's really driving it is, I think, many market speculators really getting that confidence and comfort [in] the Fed cuts," he said. The key Fed inflation gauge for February climbed 2.8% year-on-year, according to data released last Friday — likely to keep the U.S. central bank on hold before it can start considering interest rate cuts. The Fed stood pat on interest rates at the conclusion of its recent March meeting, but stuck with its forecast for three interest rate cuts this year.
