Ongoing disruption to trade flows through the Red Sea could hit global economic growth, the head of one of the world's largest container shipping firms said Thursday. Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc said it remained unclear whether passage through the waterway would be re-established in "days, weeks or months," in comments first provided to the Financial Times and confirmed to CNBC. "It could potentially have quite significant consequences on global growth," Clerc said. The company announced Friday its vessels would be diverted from the Red Sea — which provides access to Egypt's Suez Canal, the quickest route between Europe and Asia — for the "foreseeable future." Vessels are instead traveling around the southern coast of Africa, which can add between two to four weeks to a Europe-Asia voyage, Clerc previously told CNBC.

Abu Dhabi CNN —Iran has seized an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman and is transferring it to an Iranian port in retaliation for the United States confiscating the same vessel and its oil last year, Tasnim News Agency reported Thursday. The Strait of Hormuz at the northern end of the Gulf of Oman is the biggest oil chokepoint in the world. A maritime monitoring website, Tanker Trackers, said the vessel seized Thursday was a Marshall Islands-flagged crude oil tanker named St Nikolas, formerly known as the Suez Rajan. Almost 1 million barrels of Iranian crude oil were seized by the US government at the time, the DOJ said. The Suez Rajan transported the contraband to the United States and “incurred the significant expenses associated with the vessel’s voyage to the United States,” according to the DOJ.

A cargo ship crew member fell asleep on watch as the vessel ran aground in 2021, a new report found. Members of the ship's crew had been drinking onboard prior to the incident, per the report. An alarm sounded 15 times as the crew member on watch was recorded snoring, per the report. He subsequently invited three other crew members back to his cabin for an "informal wake," including the second officer, a 37-year-old Ukrainian national. The crew members drank beer and Jägermeister in the man's cabin for about three hours, the report found.

When the cruise was first announced, prices were starting at $29,999 a year/The three-year cruise was initially set to depart from Istanbul, Turkey on November 1. The company had been trying to buy AIDAaura, a 20-year-old ship, which was sold in November to another cruise company. In a statement to the news outlet, Miray Cruises owner Vedat Ugurlu said the cruise wasn't canceled but postponed until May 2024. CNN —The world’s biggest cruise ship is now in the hands of its new owner, with Royal Caribbean accepting delivery of the 1,198-foot Icon of the Seas this week. Royal Caribbean says Icon of the Seas is the cruise line’s first ship that can be powered by liquefied natural gas and will have the first waste-to-energy plant at sea. “Images of Royal Caribbean’s ships have often elicited strong responses,” cruise expert Stewart Chiron told CNN Travel when questioned about the reaction in August.
