The 2024 presidential election, explained
  + stars: | 2024-10-29 | by ( Zachary B. Wolf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +16 min
For Democrats, President Joe Biden dominated the primaries and faced only token opposition. Vice President Kamala Harris speaks as former President Donald Trump listens during a presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on September 10, 2024. Trump was accused by the Justice Department of election interference after he tried to overturn the 2020 election results. The most populous states are California (54 electoral votes), Texas (40 electoral votes) and Florida (30 electoral votes). The total number of electoral votes, 538, is an even number, which means a tie is conceivable.

As Election Day approaches, former President Donald Trump has increasingly been warning that if he loses, it will be because of cheating. That’s all they want to do is cheat,” Trump said of Democrats during a rally this month in Juneau, Wisconsin. “They’re actually using it to cheat,” Trump said on the Los Angeles radio station KFI AM 640 on Oct. 8. “They have early voting, late voting, everything is so ridiculous,” Trump said onstage in Palm Beach, Florida, in July. The campaigns for Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump both have teams of clippers. (Coincidentally, earlier in the day, Harris had announced plans for an opportunity economy task force for the island.) Most clips aren’t so cataclysmic, but evidence of the “clippers election” can be found all throughout the campaign season. Trump’s campaign account on X, dubbed @TrumpWarRoom, pushes out promotional video clips day in and day out. The Harris campaign does the same with @KamalaHQ.

Robinhood is the latest platform to allow traders to wager on the 2024 election. A recent federal court ruling opened the door to wider betting on US elections. For now, only the 2024 election contracts will be available. Until a September federal court ruling, betting on US elections was largely limited to a narrow set of academics and students. It was exactly the kind of rhetoric that the Harris campaign believes could prompt moderate voters and disaffected Republicans to choose the vice president. Harris was in red-state Texas on Friday to highlight hardline GOP abortion policies she warns could spread countrywide if Trump wins. The CNN Poll of Polls shows no clear leader nationally with Harris at 48% and Trump at 47%. Harris’ rally will provide an emphatic exclamation point for an increasingly important theme of her campaign — that Trump represents an existential threat to American democracy. Both Trump and Harris are targeting strategic sectors of their core electorates in the final days.

She is one of those millennial parents who get no childcare help from their parents, whether due to distance or larger disagreements about raising kids. Americans are more atomizedFor those who live far from family, raising kids can be an expensive and isolating experience. They also spend around $1,500 a year on respite care, short-term care service for children with disabilities. Waldron limits how many clients she accepts because she has to take care of her son, too. While the UK also has high childcare costs, Waldron is drawn to options such as 15-30 hours of free childcare a week and low-cost extracurriculars.

Related storiesA 2022 George W. Bush Institute study found that US metros with the highest immigrant population growth scored the lowest construction costs. Without the supply of these workers, history suggests housing costs are likely to rise. These could be significant, given that the construction industry would be competing against other immigrant-dependent sectors. Trump's campaign has implied that cracking down on immigration will help ease housing unaffordability by effectively removing one source of demand. Meanwhile, Trump's platform is also pushing another policy initiative that's unlikely to help housing costs: tariffs.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have laid out a broad array of ideas aimed at making life more affordable and strengthening the economy, which rank at the top of voters’ concerns. Both Trump and Harris have rolled out pricey provisions without specifying how they would cover the cost. Though his campaign hasn’t released details on the proposal, Trump has indicated that he would eliminate both federal income taxes and payroll taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. Around half of beneficiaries – mainly those with higher incomes – pay federal income tax on their Social Security payments. Harris’ plan would also accelerate the speed of Medicare’s drug price negotiations so that the costs of more medications come down faster.

Sen. JD Vance on Saturday defended former president Donald Trump's comments calling Democratic leaders "the enemy from within," saying that inflation, slowing military recruitment and the migrant crisis are a "way bigger threat than any foreign threat." These problems, the Ohio Republican told NBC News' "Meet the Press," are "caused by broken leadership." Specifically, Vance mentioned former Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a catalyst for American decline. "Under Nancy Pelosi’s long life in public leadership, the United States has gone from the preeminent industrial power of the world to second, next to China," Vance told moderator Kristen Welker. We can handle foreign conflicts.”Vance's comments follow weeks of Trump asserting that Democrats, as the "enemy from within," are more dangerous to the U.S.' future than foreign adversaries.

Now, young men have emerged as a voting bloc that could potentially swing an election expected to see a razor-thin margin of victory for the candidate who wins. The trend has been especially pronounced among young men of color. Adding to the complexity is that younger men have actually experienced solid economic gains, at least on paper, during the Biden administration. Yet, some young men continue to express concerns about making ends meet, and say they consider current immigration policies to be an obstacle to their upward mobility. In the University of Chicago GenForward poll, young men named “economic growth” as their No.1 issue, with inflation not far behind.

Russian actors "manufactured and amplified" a recent viral video that falsely showed a person tearing up ballots in Pennsylvania, the FBI and two other federal agencies said Friday. In the video, a person is seen destroying what are purported to be filled-out ballots in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. “The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office will not tolerate any voter suppression, intimidation, or fraud,” the statement added. Darren Linvill, co-director at Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub, attributed the viral video to the Russian disinformation production team known to researchers as Storm-1516. The video’s quality and the use of actors who appear to have West African accents to pose as Black Americans were characteristic of the Russian campaign, Linvill said.

The former president is returning to his hometown on Sunday for a rally in one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks, Madison Square Garden. Harris and Trump have made clear the issues they’re highlighting in the campaign’s last days. That argument illustrates what a Harris administration would look like compared with the threat Harris says Trump poses, the official said. The vice president continued that celebrity-fueled push Friday night in Texas – a rare visit to a state that is not a presidential battleground. The Madison Square Garden rally will be one of the most-covered moments of the race – with media coverage reaching into all seven swing states.

Similar to Maureen, she's concerned about financial security for older Americans — but she will be supporting Vice President Kamala Harris. "He says that he's going to keep Social Security, but you never know with him," Klein told BI of Trump. CRP research suggests that's due to fewer older adults working traditional jobs and instead pursuing entrepreneurship to supplement their retirement incomes. AdvertisementJR Reed and Krista Geer, both in charge of county-wide aging agencies, have met with older adults in Pennsylvania to hear their top worries. Critics say it isn't tied to a measure that accurately reflects the spending of older Americans.
