Nov 7 (Reuters) - The number of newborns with syphilis in the United States surged more than 10-fold in the last decade, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Tuesday. The agency said 3,761 cases were recorded in 2022, the highest in over 30 years, up from 334 cases in 2012. The 2022 cases included 231 stillbirths and 51 infant deaths. Congenital syphilis occurs when a mother with syphilis passes the infection to her baby during pregnancy. The CDC recommends screening for syphilis at the first prenatal care visit to reduce perinatal transmission.

There’s no evidence fake Ozempic pens have been dispensed to patients from legal pharmacies and no indication any patients have been harmed, the EMA said in a statement. The fake pens were caught because they were packaged with real serial numbers that were flagged as inactive when the packs were scanned. “Check the patient information leaflet for Ozempic to see what the genuine Ozempic pens should look like,” the EMA said in its warning for patients. The fake pens were detected as Ozempic and similar medicines used for both diabetes and weight loss are in shortage in both the US and Europe. Walmart is expanding its virtual health care service to employees across the US. Roughly half of traditional health plan participants do not receive primary care, due in part to lack of access. AdvertisementAdvertisementMore Walmart workers across the US will soon have access to virtual health care services as the country's largest employer expands the offering to all states starting October 14, the company said Tuesday. Employees in 21 states were previously eligible for the telehealth benefit through a provider called Included Health, which rolled out its virtual primary care offering in 2020. Walmart's US health plan spent more than $6 billion last year on claims, premiums, and administrative costs, Bloomberg reported, citing Labor Department filings.
