Japanese auto maker Toyota will announce on Tuesday an 11 billion real ($2.2 billion) investment for the next few years in Brazil, the South American country's vice-president said on Sunday. Toyota said in a statement earlier on Sunday, after local media had first reported the new investments, it had no comment on potential future plans. Brazil's vice-president and minister for industry Geraldo Alckmin said on social media the investments will be unveiled at an event in Toyota's factory in the city of Sorocaba, Sao Paulo state. Toyota would be the latest global automaker to unveil plans for extra investment in Brazil this year, following companies such as Volkswagen, General Motors and Hyundai Motor.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel last month wrote to nine large automakers and three telecom providers seeking more information about their policies involving internet-connected car technology and domestic abuse. The federal Safe Connections Act gives the FCC authority to help domestic abuse survivors securely access communications, the letter said. In an interview with Reuters this week, Rosenworcel said issues involving connected cars and domestic abuse "seemed extraordinarily similar" to the work the FCC had already done implementing the Safe Connections Act. Meanwhile, Toyota said if a domestic abuse survivor on the title requests that connected services be disabled for another person, the company may ask for verification from law enforcement that the customer was a victim. "Through these steps, Toyota works to respond promptly to requests from domestic abuse survivors while also focusing on appropriate authentication in order to screen out fraudulent or abusive requests that could further harm the abuse survivor," the company said in its response.

CNN —Toyota is recalling 381,000 Tacoma pickups because bolts in the rear axle could loosen and fall off, which could eventually allow part of the rear axle to detach. Oil might begin to leak from the truck’s rear differential underneath the vehicle, according to Toyota. Owners of recalled trucks will receive letters advising them to take their truck to a Toyota dealer to have the rear axle inspected and the nuts retightened if necessary. Toyota recently recalled 280,000 trucks and SUVs for a different issue that resulted in trucks “creeping” forward when put in neutral. Late last year, Toyota recalled 1 million vehicles for a sensor issue that could make airbags deploy when they shouldn’t.

More than 600,000 Toyota pickup trucks and SUVs in the United States were voluntarily recalled over the past week because of different issues that could increase the risk of crashes, the vehicle manufacturer said. The first announcement, on Feb. 21, stated that about 280,000 vehicles, including certain Toyota Tundra, Tundra Hybrid and Lexus LX600 vehicles from the model years 2022-2024 and Sequoia Hybrid vehicles issued from 2023-2024, were recalled because “certain parts of the transmission may not immediately disengage when the vehicle is shifted to the neutral position,” Toyota said in a statement. The defect “can allow some engine power to continue to be transferred to the wheels and can allow the vehicle to inadvertently creep forward at a low speed when it is on a flat surface and no brakes are applied, leading to an increased risk of a crash,” Toyota said. Hybrid vehicles led the 2024 top vehicle rankings released Tuesday by influential product testing organization Consumer Reports. Such "electrified" vehicles, including plug-in hybrid models, represented six of the top 10 picks by the nonprofit consumer organization. Toyota's four vehicles in the top 10 rankings were all hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles. Both hybrids and plug-in hybrids have a traditional engine combined with EV technologies. Plug-in hybrids typically have a larger battery to provide for all-electric driving for a certain number of miles until an engine is needed to power the vehicle or electric motors.

New Delhi CNN —Toyota is recalling about 280,000 pickups and SUVs in the United States because the engine may not disengage entirely when in neutral. The recall includes certain Toyota Tundra, Sequoia and Lexus LX 600 vehicles manufactured between 2022-2024. The company will inform the owners of recalled vehicles by late April and update the software for the transmission, Toyota said. The recall is one of three in the United States that the company announced Wednesday. FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — A driver who plowed into a crowd on a Southern California sidewalk in 2019, injuring nine people, was convicted Thursday of hit-and-run crimes, but jurors deadlocked on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs. A mistrial was declared over the DUI charge in the trial of 27-year-old Christopher Solis, the Orange County Register reported. Several victims were trapped under the truck until bystanders lifted the pickup and pulled them free. Jurors convicted him of hit-and-run causing injuries, hit-and-run causing property damage and being in possession of a drug. The Orange County District Attorney's Office didn't immediately indicate whether it would retry Solis on the DUI charge.
