In a sea of income-generating exchange-traded funds, BlackRock 's actively managed Flexible Income ETF (BINC) seeks to stand out with a multisector approach that balances high quality and high yield. "The way we built this portfolio is marrying high yield, investment-grade credit, agency mortgages and securitized [products]," Rieder said in an interview. Rieder said he's investing more in European high yield these days because of the strong U.S. dollar. "That is really attractive — and European high yield is cheaper than U.S.," he said. In U.S. high yield, single-B-rated debt is the most attractive, the investor said.

Hitchon sat in her car as she relayed observations about Gen Alpha, which she had spotted as a parent in the "trenches" of the school pick-up line. Gen Alpha boys were embracing early 2000s haircuts, and hoodies were very much in all around. Indeed, investors get paid for taking a small step down in credit quality in the muni bond space. What's even sweeter is that municipal bond income is generally exempt from federal income tax. This also means high income investors would have to scoop up a higher yielding corporate bond to get the same tax-advantaged yield a muni bond would generate. A measured amount of risk Munis offer lower yields compared to their corporate counterparts, but they also carry significantly less risk. Lower risk, however, doesn't necessarily mean risk free.

(Both men already hold sizable amounts of Alibaba stock.) Alibaba itself bought back $9.5 billion worth of stock last year, reducing its share count by over 3 percent. The stock purchases will probably bring attention back to Ma, a former English teacher who helped start Alibaba as an e-commerce platform. Ma, who hasn’t held a management role at Alibaba or Ant in years but remains a lifetime partner in the Alibaba Partnership, now largely focuses on Bill Gates-style philanthropy. Some movers are giving up on Los Angeles and Dallas for smaller cities in Texas and Nevada. The cherry on top is the relatively affordable real estate compared to other cities. That lump sum of cash got some movers in the door, but the booming job market and relatively affordable housing are keeping them there. New Braunfels, Texas Regan Bender/ShutterstockPeople flock to the Lone Star state, but not always to the usual destinations. New Braunfels, Texas, attracts more movers than Austin and Dallas today with its relatively affordable homes and dearth of job opportunities.

The housing market is flashing signs of life, Compass CEO Robert Reffkin said. AdvertisementThe housing market is flashing a handful of bullish signals for the year ahead, according to Compass CEO Robert Reffkin. The founder of one of the nation's top real estate brokerages said he believed the housing market will be on the path to recovery in 2024. But more owners appear to be moving out of necessity or have warmed up to the idea of selling as mortgage rates head lower. At this rate, buyers are outpacing sellers in the market, Reffkin said, noting that Compass's real estate agents are seeing more business in the new year.

The prices of a barrel of Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, and West Texas Intermediate, the US oil benchmark, have barely moved. Now, however, analysts say economic factors — weaker demand in countries such as China and Germany, ample oil and gas supply — are superseding concerns about violence in the Middle East. Al Drago/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesGlobal oil demand growth is expected to almost halve this year, the International Energy Agency said in a report Thursday. At the same time, global oil supply is forecast to hit an all-time high, driven by record output from countries including the United States and Canada, the IEA said. Nan said relatively modest demand was also helping to prevent spikes in gas prices.

Economists were expecting the annual overall inflation rate to tick higher, to 3.2% from the 3.1% headline reading the month before, according to FactSet consensus estimates. Despite the acceleration, the annual rate of consumer-level inflation is down considerably from December 2022’s rate of 6.5%; additionally, a closely watched measure of underlying inflation slowed further. In December, core goods prices were flat, an apparent stalling out after six months of declines. Rising shelter costs have kept core services elevated. The central bank has a target inflation rate of 2%, as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, which has its latest reading due out later this month.

Homebuyers are facing a worsening affordability situation with mortgage rates hovering around the highest levels in more than a decade. Real estate agents, however, say they are starting to see a new surge in demand from buyers who were sidelined by the higher rate environment. More consumers also said they expect mortgage rates to fall further, according to a recent report from Fannie Mae. Mortgage rates increased again slightly to start this week, but remain in the 6% range. If it is higher than expected, signaling there is more to do to curb inflation, mortgage rates could move up even more.

While I don't think AI is going to solve everything, I'm really excited for the role that AI is going to play in making work better. AI is really going to help people balance their workday. I think that's really going to help people clear their day and stop spending so much time on those more routine tasks that could just be automated. I think it's also going to give us an opportunity to think about productivity in a much more meaningful way. You have to really think about how you're structuring your day in order to maximize productivity.

The Fed has a "loaded gun" it can use if the Goldilocks economy worsens, Apollo Asset Management's co-president said. That's as the central back has kept rates high, giving policymakers room to lower them. "I would argue that the Fed put is back, sort of, on the market right now," James Zelter told Bloomberg TV. AdvertisementZelter noted the Fed has maintained "fairly high rates," which currently stand at 5.25%-5.5% — the highest since 2001 . Those Goldilocks conditions have helped stocks rocket upwards, as markets bet on the end of the Fed's rate hikes.

Expect to work a little harder for those fixed income returns in the new year. As a result, it may be time to start unwinding those big cash positions and adopt a longer-term mentality for fixed income investments. A runup in bond yields is accompanied by a decline in prices, and the two move inversely to one another. The sector "remains well positioned to maintain its high credit quality, driven by solid state credit quality and strong state financial support, despite soft enrollment trends," analyst Kathleen McNamara wrote last week. Consider dollar cost averaging into those longer-dated positions, incrementally building up exposure to intermediate duration bonds.

After they recited a blessing that is part of the ritual, each woman added a prayer of her own. “I just want everybody to come back alive and in one piece, mentally and physically,” said one, her voice breaking.
