SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois sheriff whose deputy fatally shot Sonya Massey said Thursday that blame for her killing lay with the deputy alone. “We were satisfied that he could work as a police officer in Illinois,” Campbell said. Grayson worked for six law enforcement agencies in central Illinois in four years, in both part-time and full-time roles, before he was hired by Sangamon County, according to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Sonya Massey speaks with Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson at the door of her home in Springfield, Ill., on July 6. Campbell said Grayson and the other deputy who responded were not aware of Donna Massey’s call before they went to Massey’s home.

The Guardian said Brown wrote to police after documents that were recently made public during civil court proceedings reportedly showed Lewis met with detectives in 2011. After he was hired by the Post, Lewis also tried to kill a story about his alleged involvement in the phone hacking scandal coverup, offering an NPR reporter an interview in exchange for squashing the forthcoming article. In May, Brown wrote to the Metropolitan Police and said he was told that the “Met’s special inquiry team” would look into it. The security threats were believed to be genuine and were not devised as part of an alleged ‘cover-up’ and there is no evidence to show that is the case,” the News UK spokesperson said. The allegations swirling around Lewis have roiled The Washington Post newsroom in recent months.

Ms. Massey had called emergency services because she believed an intruder had entered her home, prosecutors said. Mr. Grayson, 30, was charged with murder and was fired last month. Body camera footage from the shooting shows that Mr. Grayson and his partner searched outside of Ms. Massey’s home before they followed her inside. After she provided the officers with her identification, she went to the kitchen to remove a pot of water from the stove. As she was handling the pot, several feet away from the deputies, Ms. Massey said twice to the deputies, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

I think it’s totally reasonable for the president to call that out, and that’s all he did,” Vance said. Trump’s remarks are false – Harris, who was born in Oakland, California, and attended the historically Black Howard University in Washington, has never downplayed her racial identity. “And I think it’s because bad guys all over the world recognize Donald Trump’s about to be back in office, so they’re cleaning house. It would not have solved any of the problems that Kamala Harris has caused.”He said the Biden administration should instead take executive action. “They just need to empower Border Patrol to tell people who want to come in illegally, ‘You’re not allowed to do that.’ They just need to use the authority that the border czar, Kamala Harris, has.”

In an unusual move, a British court on Thursday named the 17-year-old suspect in a stabbing rampage that left three children dead and eight injured in northwestern England early this week. The suspect, Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, appeared in a court in Liverpool to face three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder, and possession of a bladed article. Although the police said repeatedly that the suspect had been born in Cardiff, Wales, misinformation spread rapidly on social media claiming that he was an undocumented immigrant. The proliferation of those erroneous reports persuaded the judge, Andrew Menary, to lift the typical restrictions on the news media’s ability to report the identity of an underage suspect. “Continuing to prevent the full reporting has the disadvantage of allowing others to spread misinformation, in a vacuum,” Judge Menary said, according to the Press Association.

Yet in over half of the shootings we identified, ICE agents never made an arrest. But Ramos still became one of dozens of people on the receiving end of an ICE agent's deadly force. A significant number of the shootings documented in the logs happened while ICE agents were off-duty or in plain clothes.

The state’s police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun told CNN in a statement that operatives arrested 11 armed “hoodlums” who set fire to a government building after looting it. Activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju told CNN Thursday that there were counter-demonstrations by pro-government protesters who arrived in buses accompanied by a security vehicle. “In the northern part of Nigeria, the largest part of our country … the primary cause of hunger is insecurity. He added that Nigerians were also pained watching their leaders live in luxury while they struggled to make ends meet. CNN —JD Vance is making a second pass at introducing himself to America as the Ohio senator attempts to put his uneven rollout as Donald Trump’s running mate in the rearview mirror. Vance is also expected to begin holding news conferences with reporters as early as this week, the source said. At a closed-door fundraiser in Oklahoma City last week, Trump’s finance team was hoping the former president’s new running mate would raise $1 million. The campaign was well aware of Vance’s past criticisms of Trump and the deeply anti-abortion views he vocally defended. Still, people close to both Trump and Vance argue that America has yet to learn how effective the Ohio senator can be when in the spotlight.

Almost 40 police officers were injured in the northwestern English town of Southport on Tuesday evening after a day of mourning for children killed in a stabbing attack was disrupted by far-right protesters. A large group that the police say included supporters of the English Defence League, a far-right extremist organization, began attacking a mosque in Southport on Tuesday evening, according to a statement from the Merseyside Police Service, which covers the region. Officials said that the targeting of the mosque and the ensuing riot appeared to be linked to online disinformation about the stabbing on Monday, when an attacker killed three children and injured eight other children and two adults at a dance class in Southport. The police on Monday arrested a 17-year-old who was born in Cardiff, Wales, on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. In line with British law regarding minors, the police did not identify the suspect, and subsequently they warned that a name being circulated on social media was incorrect.

Reuters —A Tesla Model S car was in “Full Self-Driving” mode when it hit and killed a 28-year-old motorcyclist in the Seattle area in April, police said, making it at least the second fatal accident involving the technology on which Tesla CEO Elon Musk is pinning his hopes. Tesla says its “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” software requires active driver supervision and does not make vehicles autonomous. Previously, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said there was one fatal accident involving a Tesla vehicle using FSD software between August 2022 and August 2023. This year, Musk shelved Tesla’s all-new affordable cars and increased his bets on self-driving vehicles, saying he will be shocked if Tesla cannot achieve full self-driving capability next year. In December 2023, Tesla was forced to recall nearly all its vehicles on U.S. roads to add safeguards to the software.

About 80 merchants gathered on Monday on the 30th floor of the Guangzhou office building, with some eventually gaining entry to the company premises, Chinese outlet Yicai reported. The China Securities Journal, a Beijing-based outlet run by state agency Xinhua, wrote that merchants had approached the Guangzhou office about 10 times in July over their complaints. On China's social media, anger is mounting toward what is being seen as Western shoppers taking advantage of Chinese merchants. "Foreigners can buy products from Chinese merchants, receive the goods, and not spend any money," wrote one blogger based in Hebei.

It was one of the first days of summer break, and a group of young girls was dancing to Taylor Swift songs in a studio on a quiet street in Southport, in northwest England. As the class, which also included yoga and bracelet making, was drawing to an end on Monday morning, an attacker walked in and rampaged through the room with a knife, stabbing the children and two adults. Two girls — Bebe King, 6, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7 — died of their injuries on Monday, the Merseyside Police said in a statement, while a third, 9-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar, died in the hospital early Tuesday. Eight other children were injured, five of whom remain in critical condition in the hospital, along with two adults who had tried to protect them, the police said. The question of why such an unremarkable summer morning, filled with dancing and fun, had turned to horror was on the minds of many residents of Southport, a seaside town of about 95,000 people, on Tuesday as they grappled with the violence that had visited their quiet community.

A Harris campaign official said Monday she no longer supports a fracking ban.
