When asked once in a question-and-answer sit-down with the school to describe St. John’s, Carnesecca said: “home.”It was home where he coached St. John’s to 18 20-win seasons and 18 NCAA Tournament appearances. Carnesecca coached St. John’s to the NIT title in 1989, although by then the tournament had long been a poor cousin to the NCAAs. In 1958, he took an assistant’s job at St. John’s, his alma mater, where he had played baseball but not varsity basketball. Essentially, St. John’s was getting ready for a road trip to Pittsburgh in January and Carnesecca was under the weather. After he retired, Carnesecca was succeeded by a parade of coaches at St. John’s, Mullin among them.

CNN —Police in Australia said a woman was forced to fend off a deadly tiger snake in her vehicle while driving 50 miles per hour on a freeway outside Melbourne. The woman told the officers that she had been traveling 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour) when she felt something on her foot and looked down to find a tiger snake — one of the world’s most venomous serpents — slithering up her leg. Tim Nanninga of Melbourne Snake Control, who was called to the scene to capture and relocate the snake, said the woman in Melbourne was very fortunate. “It’s a miracle how she got off the road and safely parked the car,” he told CNN affiliate 9News. Experts say the recent tropical weather Melbourne has experienced is drawing snakes out of creeks and riverbeds, 9News reported.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the assault, which triggered retaliatory firing and arson by rival groups in several areas. But dozens from both sides have been killed in Kurram since July, when a land dispute turned into general sectarian violence. Kurram is in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where armed groups like the Pakistani Taliban operate.
