Neom's flagship city, known as The Line, has grand plans to be a futuristic "eco-city." Experts told BI that these plans offered exciting solutions for issues like urban sprawl, excessive carbon emissions, and inefficient energy use. AdvertisementLovgreen pointed to issues "such as disrupting natural habitats, carbon emissions from building materials, and the transferring of these materials to areas remote from where they are produced." "Transportation accounts for less than a quarter of global carbon emissions, while the construction and operation of buildings represent nearly 40% of emissions," Baum said. She added that it can be particularly difficult to maintain sustainable construction in hot and dry regions of the world.

The Labor Department will provide its latest snapshot of the job market on Friday when it releases its monthly employment report — one that will be watched closely as the Federal Reserve looks for further signs of cooling. The report is expected to show that American employers added 175,000 jobs in July, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists. That would be a healthy number but a downshift from June, when the labor market added 206,000 jobs. Economists and Fed officials will also pay intense attention to other data in the report. Fed officials left the benchmark interest rate at 5.3 percent at their meeting this week but suggested that a rate cut could be on the table at their next gathering, in mid-September.

Read previewAn Olympics ad from Google depicting a father using its Gemini AI assistant to help his daughter compose a letter to her favorite athlete has drawn sharp criticism from online commentators. Google's "Dear Sydney" spot first aired on TV during the broadcast of the opening ceremony on July 24 and is also available on YouTube. Related stories"It follows a coherent story, focuses on characters with agency and vitality, and prioritizes people over the product," said Jon Evans, System1 chief customer officer, of Google's ad. Still, several ad experts have said Google's marketing department — which created the ad in-house rather than using an ad agency — should have done a better job of reading the room. The "Dear Sydney" spot was still airing on US TV on Tuesday morning, according to the measurement firm iSpot.

Well, a new Google ad says artificial intelligence can now do that for you. It shows the young girl training to compete like her hero, thanks to hurdling technique tips generated by Google’s AI search feature. But many early AI tools seem to do the opposite, instead enabling computers to generate traditionally human creative outputs such as art, music and stories. And yet tech firms have forged ahead with rolling out AI tools that can create new emojis, speak and even generate videos. Earlier this month, the US and allies practiced taking out a large surface ship with long-range weapons, including, for the first time, a US Air Force B-2 bomber. It showed the US military can use one of its most survivable weapons platforms, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, to sink a major surface ship with a low-cost guided bomb. The Air Force says its stealthy characteristics allow it to penetrate heavily defended areas and also fly with a small chance of being detected by radar at high altitudes. Mating it up with relatively cheap and demonstrably effective precision-guided bombs with warheads of up to 2,000 pounds could give the Air Force bombers the “anti-ship lethality” of a submarine-launched torpedo without the liabilities of a submarine, according to a US Air Force website. The Air Force first tested QUICKSINK in 2022, when an F-15 fighter jet released a GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) that destroyed a full-scale surface target in the Gulf of Mexico, according to an Air Force statement.

Jessica Cuevas loved her job as a college counselor at a high school. She had been relying on her mother for help, but her parents have been spending more time in Mexico, leaving her without an affordable and reliable child care option. Ms. Cuevas, who is 35 and lives in Chicago, works part time from home for an education nonprofit, though the work is sporadic and the pay is inconsistent. She wants a full-time job — in part so she and her husband can buy a bigger house — but she is concerned that the expense of child care would wipe out any financial upside. “I feel like right now, considering the economy, considering just the cost of living, we feel stuck,” she said.

“This will be the first Olympics, since Sydney, where the total costs are coming in under $10 billion,” said Victor Matheson, a College of the Holy Cross professor of economics who has researched the financial costs of the Olympics. Workmen adjust banners on the 3x3 basketball venue located at La Concorde, in Paris, ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. Additionally, the Paris Olympic Village will be converted into offices and housing in a historically impoverished neighborhood. Still, economists say, it may take more drastic moves in the future for the Olympics to be truly sustainable and economically sound. “I love the Olympics, and I love sporting events, but I just really do not think that the way the Olympics works now is a viable business model,” Phalin said.
