CNN —Britain’s approval of its first new deep coal mine in decades was unlawful, London’s High Court ruled on Friday following a legal challenge brought by environmental campaigners. Friends of the Earth and South Lakeland Action on Climate Change challenged the previous Conservative government’s 2022 approval of a coking coal mine in northwest England. Britain dropped its defence of the legal challenges after a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year said planning authorities must consider the impact of burning, not just extracting, fossil fuels when deciding whether to approve projects. Developer West Cumbria Mining fought the case and said the project — which planned to extract coking coal for manufacturing steel, rather than to generate electricity — would be “a unique ‘net zero’ mine”. A spokesperson for West Cumbria Mining said the company “will consider the implications of the High Court judgment and has no comment to make at this time”.

Washington CNN —The Biden administration said Friday that it has finalized tariff hikes on certain Chinese-made products that the president first announced in May. The administration’s increases come as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have clashed over tariffs on the campaign trail. Trump implemented sweeping tariffs on about $300 billion of Chinese-made products when he was in office. “Today’s finalized tariff increases will target the harmful policies and practices of the People’s Republic of China that continue to impact American workers and businesses,” US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said in a press release. China is expected to retaliate by increasing tariffs on US-made goods.

CNN —As presidential politics cloud the outlook of US Steel’s merger with its Japanese rival, a national security review of the deal is now not expected to be decided until after the election, according to people familiar with the matter. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, during a White House visit in April, told reporters that the legal reviews would determine the deal’s outcome. US Steel put itself up for sale in 2023 after receiving an unsolicited, $7 billion takeover offer from Ohio-based Cleveland Cliffs. The $14.9 billion deal with Nippon Steel, Japan’s largest steelmaker, resulted from that sales process. The White House has said it would await the recommendation of the committee, which has yet to make a decision on the matter, CNN has learned.

TOKYO — U.S. opponents of a Japanese steelmaker’s $14.9 billion bid for U.S. Steel cite concerns about national security and a reluctance to relinquish a storied American company. Apple just unveiled the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which join the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus the company announced earlier. Apple's iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, and the Apple 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display, larger than those of previous models, which measured in at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively. The new models also have the "thinnest borders on any Apple product," Apple said, calling them "by far our best iPhone displays ever." The company also said the new iPhone 16 Pro Max has "the best iPhone battery life ever" but did not offer additional details. The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999, and the Pro Max starts at $1,199, Apple said.
