A soccer team consisting entirely of transgender men has made its debut in a regional league in Spain, overcoming administrative challenges and prejudice to become the first all-trans squad to achieve federated status in Europe. Spain passed a pioneering trans rights bill last year designed to make it easier to change a person’s legal gender identity. Hugo Martinez, 24, told Reuters he faced abuse when he began transitioning with gender-affirming hormone therapy and was forced to leave the women’s soccer team in which he had played. The experience prompted Martinez to put out a call online for other trans men seeking to play soccer in a safe environment. But for its fans and players, trans men having the right to play their favorite sport on equal terms is far more important than the score.

CNN —Canadian ice dancer Nikolaj Sørensen has been suspended for a minimum of six years for “sexual maltreatment,” Canada’s Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC) announced on Wednesday. It’s unclear whether the alleged assault was ever reported to police, or if an investigation by law enforcement ever took place. While the report made by the alleged victim to the OSIC has not been released to the public, Hogshead tells CNN the alleged sexual assault occurred after a party in Hartford, Connecticut, in 2012. Sørensen and Laurence Fournier Beaudry perform their free dance in the ice dance competition at the 2024 world championships. Sørensen competed at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, finishing ninth in the ice dance competition with Beaudry.

Two racing teams, one owned by basketball legend Michael Jordan, filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday, accusing NASCAR operators of being "monopolistic bullies" who line the pockets of the circuit's founding family. "The France family and NASCAR are monopolistic bullies," according to the lawsuit. A NASCAR rep on Wednesday morning said the motorsport organization was still reviewing the complaint and could not immediately comment. Pete Rose, Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader who was banned from the sport after gambling on his own team as a player and manager, died Monday. Rose played 24 seasons in the major leagues, the last three of which were as a player-manager. Former Major League Baseball player and manager Pete Rose in Las Vegas on Dec. 15, 2015. In the years following his ban from baseball, Rose applied several times for reinstatement but was never admitted. Rose admitted to having sex with her — but said it was in 1975, when he thought she was 16, Ohio’s age of consent, according to the filing.

Rose was one of baseball’s greats – a winning-obsessed sparkplug who topped MLB’s all-time hit list with 4,256 over a 24-season career. It wasn’t until 2004 that Rose publicly admitted betting on baseball and the Reds, though he denied ever betting against his own team. Sometimes, on the weekend of baseball Hall of Fame inductions in Cooperstown, New York, he also would hold autograph sessions at a nearby bookstore. While Cooperstown didn’t admit him into its Hall of Fame, the Reds got him into theirs with the commissioner’s permission. That was the perfect way to capture Rose, said Johnny Bench, the Hall of Fame catcher.

CNN —Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo – known for his shot-blocking and famed finger wave after denying opponents at the hoop – died Monday from brain cancer aged 58, according to the NBA. Dikembe Mutombo wags his finger during a game in Atlanta in 1998. In 1997, Mutombo established the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation with a mission to improve education and quality of life in his native DRC. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement, saying, “Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life.
