Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw denounced Ancora Holdings, the activist investor currently engaged in a proxy fight with the railroad company's board, during an interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday. "We've gone to the activist, and we've offered a settlement — their responses have been unreasonable at the determination of our board," he said. Norfolk Southern faced criticism over the past year after one of its freight trains derailed in East Palestine, Ohio in February 2023 and released toxic chemicals into the soil, water and air. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, 90 minutes from East Palestine, Ancora challenged Norfolk Southern in February, aiming to add eight directors to the board and oust Shaw as CEO. "We enhanced safety, we're making it right in East Palestine," Shaw said.

In his majority opinion in the case overturning Roe v. Wade, Justice Samuel Alito insisted that the high court was finally settling the vexed abortion debate by returning the “authority to regulate abortion” to the “people and their elected representatives.”Despite these assurances, less than two years after Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, abortion is back at the Supreme Court. In the next month, the justices will hear arguments in two high-stakes cases that may shape the future of access to medication abortion and to lifesaving care for pregnancy emergencies. These cases make clear that Dobbs did not settle the question of abortion in America — instead, it generated a new slate of questions. The first case, scheduled for argument on Tuesday, F.D.A. At issue is the law’s interaction with state laws that severely restrict abortion, like an Idaho law that bans abortion except in cases of rape or incest and circumstances where abortion is “necessary to prevent the death of the pregnant woman.”

When millions of AT&T customers across the country briefly lost their cellphone service last month, Francella Jackson, 61, of Fairview Heights, Ill., said she picked up her well-worn Southwestern Bell push-button landline phone and called her friends “just so we could laugh at the people who could not use their phones.”“Why, isn’t it great that we can talk and have a great conversation?” she recalled saying. “We had a good laugh.”Derek Shaw, 68, of York, Pa., said he has an Android mobile phone, but prefers talking on his black cordless landline at home. Some Microsoft insiders worry the company's AI strategy has become too focused on its partnership with OpenAI. Insiders say Microsoft is focused less on the internal services that previously made up Azure AI Services and more on the Azure OpenAI service. The Azure OpenAI service has hundreds of developers supporting customers of Microsoft's Azure cloud service who use OpenAI's GPT models. Some Microsoft employees work so closely with OpenAI that they have badges to get into OpenAI's offices, and some OpenAI employees can badge into Microsoft locations. When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last week that Colorado could not keep Donald Trump off its presidential primary ballot, it proved at least one thing: The court can decide a case both quickly and with a keen eye to the political calendar. The court handed down its decision just one day before Super Tuesday, when voters in Colorado (and Maine) were slated to cast their primary ballots. Through different processes, both states determined that Mr. Trump had engaged in insurrection, and therefore that he was constitutionally ineligible to serve as president and could not appear on the ballot. The states had put their determinations on hold pending Supreme Court review, which meant Mr. Trump remained on the ballot. This was not the first time that the court has shown sensitivity to the political calendar.

This article is part of our Design special section about innovative surfaces in architecture, interiors and products. Lucía Cano and José Selgas are architects who have no fear of color. Founders of the studio SelgasCano in Madrid, they designed a conference center in Cartagena, Spain, that looks like a translucent organ glowing orange from within as if it were coursing with alien blood. Their Serpentine Pavilion — one of the famed temporary experimental structures displayed in London each summer — was a sprawling, tentacled cocoon with misty rainbow bands. A decade ago, the couple took their head-snapping palettes and structural whimsy to Los Angeles, where they built a co-working space in Hollywood called Second Home, with dozens of free-standing, canary-yellow-capped pods surrounded by greenery.
