Confessions of a startup founder's wife
  + stars: | 2023-11-15 | by ( Melia Russell | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +20 min
I wished I had told Kyle that I would understand if he wanted to quit. That's as apt a description of Kyle's startup as it is of our relationship. I'm not sure Kyle has found as many perks to being a startup founder married to a startup reporter. Now Kyle's startup has pivoted a third time. The truth is, I don't know if Kyle's startup will make it.

“Climate change is affecting every aspect of our lives,” Hayhoe told CNN. Here are five significant takeaways from the federal government’s sweeping climate report. Climate change doesn’t cause things like hurricanes or wildfires, but it can make them more intense or more frequent. And hotter and drier conditions from climate change can help vegetation and trees become tinderboxes, turning wildfires into megafires that spin out of control. But it’s not happening nearly fast enough to stabilize the planet’s warming or meet the United States’ international climate commitments, the report explains.

It was late October and Tim Scott’s campaign manager, Jennifer DeCasper, was trying to rally the troops on an all-staff call, announcing that they would soon relocate to Iowa in a last-ditch move to salvage his floundering presidential bid. She broke the news from the back seat of an Uber, according to four people familiar with the call. As the car bumped through the streets of Chicago after a Scott speech had run long, Ms. DeCasper insisted, “We are not failing.”But by then, even many of those around Mr. Scott believed his candidacy had already run its course. And his super PAC had canceled its own television ads days before Ms. DeCasper’s staff call. From 2020 to 2022, Mr. Ellison donated $35 million to Scott-aligned groups, and a huge check had seemed a foregone conclusion when Mr. Ellison showed up at the Scott kickoff and got a shout-out from the stage.

New York CNN —Private equity executive Edgar Bronfman, Jr., whose family includes well-known supporters of Israel, is calling for the leaders the University of Pennsylvania to step down due to their response to the Hamas terror attacks against Israel, CNN has learned. College campuses have experienced a surge in tensions since the October 7 terror attack by Hamas and as the Israel-Hamas war continues. Last week, UPenn said it alerted the FBI to a series of threatening antisemitic emails sent to university staff. UPenn declined to comment on the Bronfman email. “This blurring of Hate speech as free speech is exactly what the University has enabled – even encouraged,” Bronfman wrote.

Tim Scott Ends Bid for President

But it appeared to take Fox News' Trey Gowdy, a former GOP congressman who hosted Scott on his show Sunday, by surprise. "The voters, who are the most remarkable people on the planet, … they’re telling me, ‘Not now, Tim.’ I don’t think they’re saying, Trey, ‘no,’ but I do [think] they’re saying ‘not now,’” Scott said. But while Scott technically spoke the most during that debate, his quiet message was drowned out by others. After last Tuesday's debate, Scott brought his girlfriend of one year up to the stage, and the two briefly held hands while candidates' families mingled. “I’ll be honest with you, I ran for president to be president.

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) speaks at the third Republican candidates' U.S. presidential debate of the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign hosted by NBC News at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida, U.S., November 8, 2023. Senator Tim Scott suspended his run for the 2024 Republican presidential election nomination on Sunday after months of burning through campaign cash at a blistering rate without making a significant dent in national opinion polls. "I think the voters, who are the most remarkable people on the planet, have been really clear that they're telling me: 'Not now Tim,'" Scott told Fox News in an interview on Sunday evening. The lone Black Republican in the U.S. Senate, Scott began his campaign in May, promising to present an optimistic, forward-looking vision for America. At the same time, Scott's finances began to deteriorate, an ominous sign for any presidential campaign.

(AP) — A federal jury is expected to hear attorneys' closing arguments on Wednesday in the perjury trial of a former top prosecutor for the city of Baltimore. Marilyn Mosby, who served two terms as state's attorney for Baltimore, declined to testify before her attorneys rested their case on the third day of her trial. Mosby's attorneys said she legally obtained and spent the money. Mosby told the truth when she certified on paperwork that the pandemic devastated her business, said the defense attorney, Maggie Grace. U.S. District Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby agreed to move Mosby’s trial from Baltimore to Greenbelt, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C.Mosby’s attorneys argued that she couldn’t get a fair trial in Baltimore after years of negative media coverage.

What is a debt-to-income ratio?
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( Jamela Adam | Paul Kim | Freelance Writer | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +8 min
Your debt-to-income ratio is the percentage of your monthly income that goes toward debt payments. Besides looking at your credit score, payment history, assets, and cash flow, they also consider your debt-to-income ratio. Debt-to-income ratio (DTI) is the percentage of your monthly gross income that goes toward paying existing debts. You can have a DTI ratio as high as 43% and still get approved for a mortgage, though Rose says lenders would ideally like to see a total DTI ratio of 36% or less with 28% going toward housing expenses (front-end DTI). Debt-to-income ratio frequently asked questionsIs 50% a good debt-to-income ratio?

A shutdown could worsen the repayment challenges student-loan borrowers are experiencing. AdvertisementAdvertisementA government shutdown is once again looming, and it's threatening an already precarious return to repayment for student-loan borrowers. Thousands of federal workers would be furloughed, meaning Americans could face delays with customer service in programs like Social Security, along with student-loan repayment assistance. Even before federal student-loan payments officially resumed in October, borrowers were experiencing severe delays getting help from their student-loan servicers due to hours-long hold times and issues processing paperwork. Further limiting the number of customer service representatives available in the event of a shutdown would place a greater strain on borrowers.

The Education Department is strengthening oversight by withholding pay from one servicer, MOHELA. It's unclear at this point how withholding pay from a servicer would impact its operations, and whether the impact would trickle down to borrowers. Buchanan noted that he's still determining how exactly withholding pay would impact operations and added that he's "not making any excuses for the mistakes here."

New York CNN —University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill, facing a backlash from donors calling for her to resign, launched a new effort on Wednesday to fight antisemitism at the Ivy League school. “This is an incredibly challenging moment in the world, and we are feeling its reverberations on our campus,” Magill wrote in a letter to the Penn community on Wednesday. “The engagement of Jewish faculty, students, staff and alumni has been an important part of the success of Penn as a leading University,” Magill said. Magill condemned antisemitism broadly before that festival and noted that some speakers had a history of making antisemitic remarks. Organizers of the three-day-long Palestine Writes festival denied that it embraced antisemitism, according to UPenn student newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Paul Sewald watched the end of his first World Series game in the Arizona Diamondbacks clubhouse and the trainer's room, not from the center of a celebration on the mound as he had imagined. Arizona won that thrilling classic in seven games, but now the team's last three World Series losses have all followed tying home runs in the ninth. The Diamondbacks' bullpen entered Friday with a 2.94 ERA this postseason and hadn't blown a save since the regular season. Arizona pitchers, however, lost their grip in the World Series opener. “You can’t walk 10 batters in a World Series game and expect to hold them in the situation that we held them in,” Lovullo said.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Republican presidential candidates professed their strong support for Israel on Saturday as they addressed an influential Republican Jewish group during a campaign stop that coincided with Israel’s stepped-up offensive in the war against Hamas and included the exit of a high-profile contender from the 2024 race. Israel has targeted the Palestinian enclave with airstrikes and cut off power and communications as it mounts an operation against the militant group. But this year's summit comes as Israel has been plunged in crisis and put on war footing. The organization's longtime benefactor, billionaire casino mogul and GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson, became a big backer of Trump and implored coalition members to support Trump in 2016. In their remarks, most of the candidates pledged robust support for Israel.

Student-loan company MOHELA said on its website that it's transitioning borrowers to a new platform. The switch could mean up to 30-day delays in posting new payments. MOHELA borrowers will have to establish a new account on the platform, and its mobile app will no longer be available once the transition is complete. The announcement of this change comes less than a month after federal student-loan payments resumed following an over three-year pause. His testimony sheds new light on how his office vetted the tip, and he disputed past Democratic claims that he “closed” the matter without recommending any further scrutiny. However, it doesn’t bolster the GOP narrative that Joe Biden or his son Hunter Biden were offered or accepted a bribe. The informant described his interactions with Mykola Zlochevsky, a Ukrainian oligarch and owner of the energy company Burisma, where Hunter Biden had served on the board. The saga of a once-trusted FBI informant bringing explosive but unverified claims about a presidential candidate is reminiscent of the Christopher Steele debacle in 2016. This time, the political roles are reversed: Republicans are championing the unproven bribery claims, as Democrats try to discredit the material.

All Blacks coach Ian Foster changed his lock combination again with Brodie Retallick restored to the lineup and Sam Whitelock returning to the list of replacements in the only change to the starting team. New Zealand believe the 35-year-old Whitelock, playing his third World Cup final, is most effective coming off the bench, and could bring an injection of energy at a time when South Africa are refreshing their forwards. Six of New Zealand's matchday squad for the game are previous World Cup winners and the 23-man team has a collective total of 1,387 caps, making it the most experienced All Blacks squad for any of their record five World Cup finals appearances. Sen. Tim Scott's presidential campaign, once seen as emerging force, has faltered in recent weeks. Scott has sought to offer an optimistic message to voters, but Trump remains on top in the GOP race. The rise of fellow South Carolinian Nikki Haley has also complicated Scott's path to the nomination. Over the course of Scott's campaign, his campaign has so far focused heavily on winning the Iowa caucuses, and during the summer he was seemingly clipping at Florida Gov. A leading Scott backer, who spoke to Politico anonymously, remarked that the senator's campaign team "fundamentally miscalculated what it means to run for president and generate news coverage."
