[1/2] Activists from the animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) protest against bullfighting near Vatican, in Rome, Italy, July 28, 2023. REUTERS/Antonio DentiVATICAN CITY, July 28 (Reuters) - A group of animal rights activists gathered near the Vatican on Friday dressed in red capes and fake horns to urge Pope Francis to denounce what they see as the barbaric practice of bullfighting. "Catholic Church: Silence is Violence! Denounce bullfighting," read a banner held up by the activists near the ancient Roman Castel Sant'Angelo fortress on the banks of the River Tiber, in view of St Peter's Basilica. Since bullfighting events "are often held in honour of Catholic saints or during holy Christian celebrations, the Catholic Church can and must help end this abuse by publicly condemning bull torture in the name of religion," animal rights group PETA said in a statement.

Rick Froberg, Singer of Artful Intensity, Is Dead at 55

Rick Froberg, the vocalist and guitarist best known for his work with the influential 1990s post-hardcore band Drive Like Jehu, whose urgent howl was one of rock’s most distinctive voices, died on June 30 in San Diego. Mr. Froberg, a beloved linchpin of the San Diego underground music scene that flourished in the 1980s and ’90s, sang in a raspy roar that segued smoothly between snarl and scream. Mr. Froberg particularly loved the gnarled growls of the Australian vocalists Bon Scott of AC/DC — his favorite band — and Chris Bailey of the proto-punk Saints, and he strived to follow them, Mr. Reis said. They bonded immediately and soon joined up in Pitchfork, with Mr. Froberg on vocals. The band was inspired, Mr. Reis said, by the noisy music being issued at the time on independent labels like Dischord, Touch & Go and SST.

Industry Ventures is one of the largest players in the VC secondary market, where shares of startups are bought and sold. Industry Ventures, a pioneer in the venture capital secondary market where shares of startups are bought and sold, has raised $1.4 billion for its latest flagship secondary fund, according to an SEC filing. The last time the industry saw a fund of this size was when StepStone Group closed its $2.3 billion secondary fund in 2021. "Everyone is gonna have to have a secondary strategy," said Ken Sawyer, co-founder of Saints Capital, another major player in the VC secondary market. This latest fundraise by Industry, which is backed by Goldman Sachs Asset Management among others, could be a sign of increased interest in the VC secondary market.

June 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court's conservative-majority ruling letting certain businesses refuse to provide services for same-sex marriages could impact an array of customers beyond LGBT people, according to the court's liberal justices. Smith said, for instance, she would happily serve an LGBT customer who wants graphics for an animal shelter. Critics said that distinction between message and status was not so clear-cut and could quickly veer into targeting people instead. The ruling takes LGBT rights backwards, Sotomayor wrote. The ruling's rationale cannot be limited to discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity and could exclude other groups from many services, Sotomayor said.

So much remains to be explored because reaching the bottom of the ocean is an incredibly difficult task. But the ocean depths have much to offer, including lifesaving compounds and the secrets of how life on Earth evolved. The event is nearly 10 months away, but people are already anticipating the total solar eclipse that will pass over Mexico, the US and Canada on April 8, 2024.

Abortion is ancient history and that matters today
  + stars: | 2023-06-23 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
This long view of abortion matters, according to Mary Fissell, a professor of the history of medicine at Johns Hopkins University. That’s because assumptions about how abortion was viewed in the past color present-day arguments about abortion rights. Abortion opponents portray the rights granted by Roe v. Wade and legal access to abortion as an historical aberration, according to Fissell, which is not accurate, historians say. Earliest references to abortionThe first written references to abortion are contained in an ancient Egyptian papyrus written about 3,500 years ago. For most of history, abortion has not been an issue about the fetus, like it is today, but rather about women’s behavior.

Public schools are closed for the summer in Utah, leaving their libraries quieter than usual. In this case, the titles in question are the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Utah is home to the world headquarters of the church and has the nation’s highest concentration of members of that faith. Both complaints followed the passage of state legislation prohibiting “pornographic or indecent” materials in public school settings. The December challenge against the Bible, which was reported by The Salt Lake Tribune, dripped with sarcasm.

VATICAN CITY, May 22 (Reuters) - Pope Francis will travel to Portugal from Aug. 2-6 to attend the World Youth Day and visit the Shrine of Fatima, the Vatican said on Monday. World Youth Day, a global gathering of young Catholics, is being held in Lisbon from Aug. 1-6. The Vatican said Francis would take advantage of the trip to travel also to the Shrine of Fatima in central Portugal on Aug. 5. The Catholic Church teaches that the Madonna appeared to three Portuguese children 100 years ago in what was then an impoverished farming village. The pope last visited the shrine in 2017 when he declared two of the children saints.
“Succession” has treated us to both a wedding and a funeral as fate of the Roy siblings spin out towards its finale (which is produced by Warner Bros. Discovery, parent company of CNN), and its penultimate episode gave us mourning dress codes in a grand Catholic setting. “I can do anything — my dad just died,” Shiv responds when asked for a favor at the mass. By episode nine, with the company in a shaky post-Logan transition, the optics of how the Roy siblings perform at the funeral hold a lot of weight. Emotions must be stamped down, they maintain a fragile façade, and getting too close to the truth of Logan Roy is met with a wall of cognitive dissonance.

It’s a story about my mother, and the White relatives who shunned me at birth—and still somehow became family. I now know one of the reasons my family didn’t tell me about my mom’s illness is because they didn’t know how. I vividly recall thinking as I looked at my mom: I didn’t know a White person could suffer like this. I saw White, Black, and brown people hug and call each other “brother” and “sister” after worship service. April 28 (Reuters) - According to some of the headlines after Manchester City's crushing defeat of title rivals Arsenal this week the sky blue ribbons can already be fastened to the Premier League trophy. But City boss Pep Guardiola is too long in the tooth to assume a fifth league title in six seasons is now a formality. It was their seventh successive league win and left them two points behind Arsenal with two games in hand, having trailed by eight not long ago. The two clubs immediately above Saints, Everton and Leicester City, meet on Monday in a true 'six-pointer'. Liverpool are seeking a fourth successive win and, belatedly, have joined the Premier League party.

Harris had previously promoted the QAnon conspiracy theory and authored a debunked report alleging mass voter fraud in the 2020 election. Harris did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did the Arizona Republican Party. Harris is the third state lawmaker to be removed from office by her colleagues this year.

Today’s partisan panic about democracy is brought to you by the state of Tennessee, where Democrats are making secular saints out of two state lawmakers expelled by the House for disrupting the legislative work of their colleagues. Will representative government survive? Yes, somehow we think it will. Tensions were high at the state capitol last week, amid protests calling for something to be done in response to the recent shooting at an elementary school in Nashville. Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson seized control of the House floor with a bullhorn, demanding action and leading the spectators in the gallery in chants of “Gun control now!” and “No action, no peace!”
