He and his son were arrested on Sept. 12 in the Pakistani city of Karachi during a raid on Afghan migrants. Mr. Gul, 30, was born and raised in Karachi and married his wife there. His wife, Ram Bibi, 29, also an Afghan citizen, sold valuables to hire a lawyer who could argue that Mr. Gul was a legal resident of Pakistan. But he was deported to Afghanistan on Nov. 13, after Pakistan set a deadline for all 1.7 million illegal migrants to leave, most of them Afghans. Mr. Gul is now stranded in a country he does not know, leaving his pregnant wife and his children at the mercy of impoverished relatives to survive.

According to Fain, workers at some nonunion plants, including the electric vehicle sales leader, Tesla, have contacted the UAW about joining the union, which hasn't even begun its organizing efforts. Fain declined to say which nonunion companies the UAW would target first. The union, Fain says, also will have to organize Detroit automakers' EV battery plants, which are joint ventures with South Korean companies. He noted the concessions the UAW agreed to in 2008 to help the automakers survive dire financial problems. This time, he said, union members negotiated for themselves but also won raises for nonunion workers in the South who would have received nothing without the UAW.

WESTCLIFFE, Colo. (AP) — Authorities in Colorado hunted Tuesday for a man they believe shot and killed three people and critically wounded a fourth in a property dispute. The 45-year-old suspect was believed to be driving a white Ram 1500 pickup truck with a camper shell, according to a Facebook post from the Custer County Sheriff's Office. The shooting took place on the property line in a wooded area and began with “a suspected property dispute,” the Sheriff's Office said. Some thieves are stealing vehicles, from cars to backhoes and driving them into stores that they want to rob. Retailers from Target to Home Depot have talked a lot lately about theft, though the extent of the problem is unclear. AdvertisementSome thieves who target retailers are stealing vehicles and smashing them through storefronts in a twist on retail theft known as "ram raiding." But some thieves aren't looking to steal merchandise at all: Instead, they steal ATMs inside of stores to break into them and steal the cash. But gauging the real impact of retail theft on retailers' stores and broader business is tough.

Some sailors off the Iberian coast are turning to heavy metal to deter orcas from ramming into their boats. The music will also add to human-made ocean noise, which is already a major issue for marine animals. AdvertisementSailors using heavy metal music to deter orcas from ramming into their boats could find that the strategy backfires. AdvertisementAdditionally, Trites told Business Insider that if sailors adopted this method, the most harmful result would be an addition to noise pollution in the ocean. Human-caused noise pollution comes from a variety of sources, including ships, energy production via wind turbines, underwater mining, and even low-flying planes.

United Auto Workers members rally outside Stellantis' Ram 1500 plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, after the union called a strike at the plant on Oct. 23, 2023. DETROIT – United Auto Workers members at Chrysler owner Stellantis have ratified a new labor contract following a historically contentious round of bargaining between the union and company, according to preliminary results posted Friday by the union. UAW members with Ford Motor are on pace to also ratify their agreement, but are continuing to vote Friday. The Stellantis deal received notable objection at the automaker's Jeep plants in Toledo, Ohio, with 55% of workers there opposing the deal. The contract ratifications come weeks after the automakers and the union reached tentative deals, ending roughly six weeks of targeted strikes by the UAW.
Persons: Stellantis, they've, ratifications Organizations: United Auto Workers, DETROIT – United Auto Workers, Chrysler, Detroit automakers, General Motors, UAW, GM, Ford, Stellantis Locations: Sterling Heights , Michigan, DETROIT, Illinois, Toledo , Ohio
Overall, 68.4% of Stellantis workers who cast ballots were in favor of ratification, and the contract was leading by more than 9,600 votes with only three small facilities uncounted. At Stellantis, workers at the large Jefferson North factory that makes Jeep Grand Cherokees voted 70.7% in favor of the agreement. Top assembly plant workers would get immediate 11% raises and earn roughly $42 per hour when the contracts expire in April of 2028. More than half of GM's 46,000 union workers get the top assembly plant wage. Longtime assembly plant workers also wanted to see larger pension increases as well as defined benefit pensions and health care in retirement for workers hired after 2007.

The final results from all the UAW members at GM were posted on the union’s Web site Thursday morning. If workers had rejected the deal, it could have brought about a resumption of the strikes at the company. Neither the union nor any of the companies had any immediate comment on the vote results, the final vote at GM, or preliminary votes at the other two automakers. Teamster members voted 86% in favor of that union’s deal with UPS in July. Others said that the union could achieve even better deals if members voted no.

The three contracts, if approved by 146,000 union members, would dramatically raise pay for autoworkers, with increases and cost-of-living adjustments that would translate into a 33% wage gain. Top assembly plant workers would earn roughly $42 per hour when the contracts expire in April of 2028. Several smaller facilities were still voting, many of them parts warehouses or component factories where workers got big pay raises and were expected to approve the contract. Full-time temporary workers liked the large raises they received and the chance to get top union pay, he said. In the deals with all three companies, longtime workers would get 25% general raises over the life of the contracts with 11% up front.

[1/2] Smoke rises in Gaza, as seen from southern Israel, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas, November 16, 2023. The match is being played in neutral venue of Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates, because of the conflict. "Everything changed after Oct. 7 with the start of the conflict in Gaza," Palestine Football Association (PFA) media manager Ahmed Rajoub told the National media outlet. "All sporting activities stopped completely in Palestine, and the football team was forced to move to Jordan. "We just can't get the players focused on the game when people are killed and injured every day since the conflict started," he said.

Nov 16 (Reuters) - Palestine drew 0-0 with Lebanon on Thursday in a World Cup qualifier played without fans in the United Arab Emirates due to the Israel-Gaza conflict. Despite starting official training only four days ago, the Palestinians started the game well. Karim Darwich missed a good chance for Lebanon three minutes into the second half and Palestine, ranked 94th by FIFA, had a Tamer Seyam shot saved by Lebanon goalkeeper Moustafa Matar. Lebanon's Ali Al Haj shot into the side netting after 87 minutes before Matar saved Oday Dabbagh's close-range shot with his out-stretched leg in the final minute. The Palestinians usually host games at Al-Ram's Faisal Al-Husseini Stadium on the West Bank but they will meet Australia next in Kuwait on Nov. 21.

A United Automobile Workers union vote on a tentative contract agreement with General Motors that provides record wage increases has run into unexpectedly strong resistance from veteran workers. A majority of workers at several large plants in Michigan, Indiana and Tennessee rejected the contract, though union members at a large sport utility plant in Arlington, Texas, voted in favor of it. G.M., Ford Motor and Stellantis agreed to similar contracts with the union after U.A.W. Workers walked off the job at the first three plants on Sept. 15 and stayed on strike for more than 40 days. The agreement appears to be headed for ratification at Ford and Stellantis, the maker of Chrysler, Jeep and Ram vehicles, by comfortable margins, according to running tallies the U.A.W.

New York CNN —Stellantis is offering buyouts to half of its salaried US staff in a cost cutting move. That comes to 6,400 of the 12,700 nonunion staff. “As the U.S. automotive industry continues to face challenging market conditions, Stellantis is taking the necessary structural actions to protect our operations and the company,” said the company’s statement. Stellantis has yet to put any pure EV cars for sale in the US market and has more to do to catch up. The West could live with a frozen Ukraine conflict
  + stars: | 2023-11-13 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Ukraine may be heading for a similarly frozen conflict with Russia. So a frozen conflict would help the West achieve – at least partly – its key geostrategic aim: to show hostile powers that it doesn’t pay to invade one of its friends. In a frozen conflict, Ukraine would still need to invest heavily in massive fortifications, anti-missile defence systems and technology to deter Russian attacks. ECONOMIC WARIn a frozen conflict, sanctions against Russia would probably remain more or less in place. REBUILDING UKRAINEIt will be harder to rebuild Ukraine’s infrastructure in a frozen conflict than if there was peace.

Smoke plumes were visible across the sky as revellers let off firecrackers in the evening to mark the country's biggest festival. Every year government authorities or India's Supreme Court impose bans on firecrackers - but only rarely do those bans appear to be enforced. Globally, air pollution was the worst in India's eastern city of Kolkata, while Delhi was the fifth-most polluted, according to Swiss group IQAir. Doctors say the air quality is likely to worsen on Monday as smoke from firecrackers lingers in the air, potentially causing itchy eyes and irritation in the throat. Some Hindus resent the Diwali firecracker bans, which they see as an attempt to interfere with them observing their religious festivals.

The Russian and Ukrainian militaries both lack junior officers who can lead large forces in battle. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe difference between an army and a well-armed mob often comes down to the presence of good junior officers. "The heavy attrition of experienced junior officers and trained field-grade staff has limited the scale at which offensive action can be synchronized." This same pattern can be seen today in Ukraine, where Russian operations have been characterized by rigid tactics and slow reaction times on the ground and in the air. Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

BELVIDERE, Illinois, Nov 9 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden on Thursday backed the United Auto Workers' efforts to unionize carmakers Tesla (TSLA.O) and Toyota (7203.T) and asked auto workers to reject his Republican opponent, Donald Trump. En route to the event, Biden told reporters that he “absolutely” supports the UAW's efforts to unionize Tesla and Toyota workers. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the remark by Biden, who has backed UAW efforts in other speeches. Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, visited a nonunion factory in Michigan in September while Biden joined a picket line with striking UAW workers, Biden reminded workers. MUSK'S ANTI-UNION STANCEBiden's comments may renew friction between the U.S. president and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, especially as the UAW seeks to organize Tesla workers.

He ordered up an economic analysis and spoke to company officials about the plant, according to White House officials. On Thursday, Biden will visit Belvidere to showcase that same auto plant, which has reopened as part of the settlement of a targeted strike by the United Auto Workers union. O'Malley Dillon said the UAW contracts and the auto plant reopening reflect a larger focus on workers by the president. The contracts, if approved by 146,000 union members in the coming weeks, would dramatically raise pay for auto workers. Top assembly plant workers would earn roughly $42 per hour.
