On Friday morning, eight of the cathedral’s bells tolled for the first time since April 2019, according to Alexandre Gougeon, who managed their installation. “Hearing the bells ring this morning was very moving,” Gougeon told CNN, adding that the project to install the bells had taken a year and a half. Three people were charged in relation to the death of singer Liam Payne, Argentina's public prosecutor announced in a statement Thursday. The prosecutor's statement said that during the investigation into Payne's death, "illicit conduct was discovered from which three people were charged with the crimes of abandonment of a person followed by death, supply and facilitation of narcotics." Someone who was with Payne on a daily basis while he was in Buenos Aires is charged with abandoning a person following death, Andrés Madrea's statement said. Forensic workers remove the body of British singer Liam Payne from the hotel where he died in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Oct. 16. Throughout the investigation, "exhaustive and meticulous actions and measures were taken to clarify the circumstances surrounding the artist's death," the statement said.

MUNICH — A U.S. citizen suspected of offering intelligence about the American military to China has been arrested in Frankfurt, German authorities said Thursday. Identified only as Martin D. under German privacy law, the federal prosecutors office said in a statement that the suspect “worked for the U.S. armed forces in Germany,” until recently. Prosecutors added that, as some point this year, the suspect “contacted Chinese government agencies and offered to provide them with sensitive U.S. military information for forwarding to a Chinese intelligence service.” They did not say when the offer took place. The suspect “obtained the information in question during his work with the U.S. armed forces,” prosecutors said, adding that investigators had searched his apartment. It added that she gave the information to a second Chinese national, named as Jian G., who is being prosecuted separately.

Prosecutors have said in court filings that four aggravating factors exist in the case against Kohberger, who turns 30 later this month, making the crime more severe and the death penalty warranted. In another filing last month, Logsdon countered the state's claim that a "future dangerousness" aggravator exists in Kohberger's case. "Aggravators are intended for deciding which First Degree Murderers merit the death penalty. The death penalty in Idaho, while it remains on the books, had lapsed as its last execution was in 2012; the state, like many others, has had trouble procuring lethal injection drugs. But the state abandoned the execution after prison staff failed to establish an IV line, exposing the difficulties with administering the death penalty.

BOISE, Idaho — A federal judge has temporarily halted the planned execution of an Idaho man on death row whose first lethal injection attempt was botched earlier this year. Thomas Eugene Creech was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection Nov. 13 — roughly nine months after the state first tried and failed to execute him. Execution team members tried eight locations in Creech’s arms and legs on Feb. 28 but could not find a viable vein to deliver the lethal drug. Creech’s defense team also has other legal cases underway seeking to stop him from being put to death. He has been in prison for half a century, convicted of five murders in three states and suspected of several more.

Caroline Ellison, the star witness in the prosecution of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, reported to a low-security federal prison in Connecticut on Thursday, according to a spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons. The federal Probation Department had recommended that Judge Lewis Kaplan sentence Ellison to three years of supervised release, with no time behind bars. Kaplan allowed Ellison to remain free on bail until surrendering to prison either on or after Nov. 7. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March and also was ordered to pay $11 billion in forfeiture by Kaplan. Both Bankman-Fried and Ellison had faced the same statutory maximum sentence of about 110 years in prison for their crimes.

NEW YORK — Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine struck a deal to end his current jail stint, agreeing to serve a month behind bars for violating the terms of his release after a felony conviction, prosecutors said Wednesday. The deal with federal prosecutors was described in a letter partially endorsed by a Manhattan federal judge. It calls for the entertainer to be sentenced to a month in jail, followed by a month of home incarceration, a month of home detention and a month of curfew. The terms of the deal also call for Tekashi 6ix9ine to submit to supervision from the court’s Probation Department for another year. CNN —The defense for Richard Allen, the man accused of killing two teenagers in Delphi, Indiana, in 2017, rested its case Wednesday after several days of calling witnesses, including a cell phone forensic expert and a psychiatrist, according to CNN affiliate WTHR. He has pleaded not guilty to four charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of felony murder, court records show. Liberty "Libby" German and Abigail "Abby Williams were found dead after going on a hike in February 2017 in Delphi, Indiana. FBIOn Tuesday, a cell phone forensic expert testified that data from Libby’s cell phone shows someone inserted a headphones cord into the phone on the night the girls went missing and then removed it five hours later, according to WTHR. Over the years, authorities released sketches and portions of a video recorded on Libby’s cell phone in hopes of finding a suspect.

SAN DIEGO — Former military defense contractor Leonard “Fat Leonard” Francis was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison for masterminding a decade-long bribery scheme that swept up dozens of U.S. Navy officers, federal prosecutors said. The Malaysian defense contractor was a key contact for U.S. Navy ships at ports across Asia for more than two decades. He pleaded guilty in 2015, admitting that he had offered more than $500,000 in cash bribes to Navy officials, defense contractors and others. While awaiting sentencing, Francis was hospitalized and treated for renal cancer and other medical issues. The felony convictions of four former Navy officers were vacated following allegations of prosecutorial misconduct.

A jury has found a man guilty of conspiring to steal a passenger jet and commit a 9/11-inspired attack under the direction of Somalian terrorist organization “al Shabaab.”Cholo Abdi Abdullah, 34, was found guilty Monday on six counts including conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and conspiring to murder U.S. nationals. Abdullah had sworn allegiance to Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mijahideen, the militant Islamist group commonly known as “al Shabaab,” based in Somalia, prosecutors said. He took part in a plot to hijack a commercial plane and crash it into a building in the U.S., reminiscent of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, prosecutors said. He also sent encrypted messages to his al Shabaab handler which included details on post-9/11 hijackings. On Monday, he was further convicted on counts of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, conspiring to commit aircraft piracy, conspiring to destroy aircraft, and conspiring to commit acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries.

Police in Germany arrested eight suspected members of a far-right militant organization early Tuesday, Germany’s public prosecutor said. It said its members, including the arrested suspects, repeatedly completed paramilitary training in combat gear, practiced specifically urban warfare, firearms handling and other skills. The group also procured military hardware, such as camouflage fatigues, combat helmets, gas masks and bullet-proof vests, the statement said. In 2022, a group of so-called Reichsbuerger planned to storm into the parliament building in Berlin and arrest lawmakers, according to prosecutors. German government and security officials have warned for years of the growing threat by far-right extremists to Germany’s democratic order.

Boston AP —A jury on Tuesday found an Alabama man not guilty of killing an 11-year New Hampshire girl more than 35 years ago. “I recognize the work and dedication of the jury during their long deliberations in this case,” Tucker said. The body of the Salem, New Hampshire, girl was found in a Lawrence, Massachusetts, trainyard on Sept. 12, 1988, a day after she was reported missing. The family, in statement, said they respected the process but believe McClendon was still guilty of murder based on the DNA results. Strasnick told the jury that the DNA evidence taken from under Tremblay’s fingernails excludes 99.8% of the male population.
