DETROIT – Ford Motor will expand production of its large Super Duty trucks to a Canadian plant that was previously set to be converted into an all-electric vehicle hub. The new plans include investing about $3 billion to expand Super Duty production, including $2.3 billion at Ford's Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada, Ford said Thursday. The remaining investment will be used to increase production at supporting facilities in the U.S. and Canada, the company said. Ford currently produces Super Duty trucks – the larger siblings of the F-150 full-size pickup used largely by commercial and business customers – at plants in Ohio and Kentucky. Ford said the Canadian plant, which is expected to come online in 2026, will add capacity of roughly 100,000 units annually.

Instead, Ford will turn the factory in Oakville into a third production location for its Super Duty pickup trucks, which are among its most profitable models. Jim Farley, the chief executive of Ford, said the company’s two other Super Duty plants, in Kentucky and Ohio, were running at full capacity but couldn’t produce as many vehicles as its commercial customers wanted. Two people were killed and at least nine others were injured after an apparently impaired driver plowed a pickup truck into a crowd of people celebrating July 4 in a park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the authorities said. Several of the injured were transported to hospitals, two of them in critical condition, the authorities said at a news conference on Thursday night. A police spokesman confirmed by phone that one person had been taken into custody. Speaking at the news conference, Mayor Eric Adams of New York said that though investigations were preliminary, the incident did not appear to be “terrorist related.” Officers responding to the scene smelled alcohol on the driver, and the police were conducting tests to confirm, officials said. Police said that just before 9 p.m., a Ford F-150 driving eastbound at high speed down Water Street sped through a stop sign, up onto the sidewalk and into Corlears Hook Park, where a crowd of people were celebrating the holiday.

The Biden administration reached a settlement with General Motors after determining that the automaker sold nearly six million cars that emitted more planet-warming carbon dioxide than the company had claimed, violating federal regulations. An investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency found that in those years G.M. had sold about 4.6 million full-sized pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles, and 1.3 million midsize sport-utility vehicles, that it claimed met the pollution standards, but in fact hadn’t. “E.P.A.’s vehicle standards depend on strong oversight in order to deliver public health benefits in the real world,” said E.P.A. “Our investigation has achieved accountability and upholds an important program that’s reducing air pollution and protecting communities across the country.”

New York CNN —Tesla sales fell for the second straight quarter. In the fourth quarter BYD briefly passed Tesla in global EV sales. But the better-than-expected Tesla sales were enough to lift shares of Tesla (TSLA) by more than 9% in midday trading. The strong EV sales were balanced by a slight drop - about 0.3% - in sales of traditional gasoline powered cars. Toyota’s US EV sales soared even more, rising 301% to 11,600.

The Detroit automaker on Tuesday reported sales of 696,086 for the second quarter, up 0.6% from a year earlier and its highest quarterly units sold since the fourth quarter of 2020. Still, EVs made up only 3.2% of its total second-quarter sales. Sales of GM's full-size pickup trucks were roughly 229,000 during the second quarter, up about 6% from a year earlier and the best quarterly sales since 2021. GM's second-quarter sales are expected to slightly outpace the overall industry. Kia, which reports sales on a monthly basis, reported a 6.5% decrease in its June sales.
