Phillip alleged Barclays owed her a duty to ignore her instructions if the bank had reasonable grounds to suspect she was being defrauded. "Where the customer has authorised and instructed the bank to make a payment, the bank must carry out the instruction promptly," he said. "It is not for the bank to concern itself with the wisdom or risks of its customer's payment decisions." James Levy, a partner at law firm Ashurst, said the onus was on customers to ensure payment instructions were bona fide. The Supreme Court, however, allowed Philipp to pursue an alternative case against Barclays on the grounds that the bank breached its duty by failing to take adequate steps to recover the money transferred to the UAE.

Spot gold was up 0.8% to $1,927.90 per ounce by 10:25 a.m. EDT (1425 GMT), after dropping to a more than three-month low earlier in the session. Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields slipped to a 10-day low, reducing the opportunity cost of owning non-yielding gold. Spot silver rose 0.9% to $22.44 per ounce, but was set for its biggest weekly drop since October 2022. Platinum was down 0.3% to $920.38, on course for its worst week since August 2022. One of Cootie’s first rebellions is his insistence on trying a Bing Bang Burger, whose comically unappealing commercials he sees constantly on TV. It is fastidiously, hilariously committed to the bit, constantly doubling down on the logistics of Cootie’s bigness. “I’m a Virgo” comes on the heels of a few ingenious experiments in TV surrealism, from “Atlanta” to “Undone” to the recent farce “Mrs. Its fantastical concept works in metaphor just the same way it works in fact, as it reminds us with proud bluntness. “I’m a Virgo” is a visual and ideological counterpoint to all this.

Stocks are once again in a bull market, with the S&P 500 now up more than 20% since October's lows. Nearly all of the recent rally can also be attributed to the index's top 10 stocks, he said. "During the late-90s tech bubble, over one-third of returns came from these mega-cap stocks," Wool said. "In the recent bull run, by contrast, almost the entire market return was accounted for by just ten companies' performance." A 15% decline would put the S&P 500 at 3,800.

Oil rebounded on Thursday after the previous day's plunge, as data showed a jump in refinery runs at the world's top crude importer China, though a weak economic backdrop capped gains. China's oil refinery throughput in May rose 15.4% from a year earlier, data showed on Thursday, hitting its second highest total on record. But a weak economic outlook capped price gains on Thursday, as China's industrial output and retail sales growth in May missed forecasts. The somber Chinese data weighed on oil prices, said Priyanka Sachdeva, a market analyst at Phillip Nova. A high-for-longer rate outlook may lead to further growth pressures and keep oil demand conditions in check, said Yeap Jun Rong, a market strategist at IG.

Previously, the Netherlands had said it aimed to start training Ukrainian pilots "as soon as possible", but had stopped short of specifying when such training could get under way. And we'll see if that's realistic" for the start of the training programme, Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren told Reuters in an interview. A final decision has not yet been taken on a request from Kyiv to supply dozens of F-16s, Ollongren said. Two sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters the training would begin with two groups of 12 Ukrainian pilots, already experienced flying Soviet-era MiGs. Ukrainian pilots would have to learn how to operate the F-16's so-called 'hands-on throttle and stick'.

REUTERS/Carlos BarriaJune 9 (Reuters) - The largest U.S. business group on Friday urged President Joe Biden him to intervene immediately and appoint an independent mediator to address a protracted West Coast ports labor dispute. West Coast ports stretching from California to Washington state are critical to U.S. supply chains and the nation's economy. U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Suzanne Clark in a letter to Biden cited "continued and potentially expanded service disruptions at these ports heading into peak shipping season." Workers reported for duty on Thursday and Friday at the Port of Los Angeles, officials said. "Operations going into the weekend seem to be the most normal they've been" since labor disruptions started late last week, Los Angeles port spokesman Phillip Sanfield said, adding that the port has limited weekend hours.

The "Dana Desa" village fund introduced by President Joko Widodo in 2015 and valued at $4.7 billion this year has long been criticised as prone to corruption. "So it's reasonable if the use of the village fund is somewhat loose and anyone can do what they want with it." "I have never seen a project funded by the village fund, not at all," said Bernadus Kobogau, a tourism official in Intan Jaya. Opinion | How to Fix the National Drug Shortage

If a drug manufacturer wants to supply a hospital, nursing home or other institution, it has almost no choice but to go through one of these organizations. The manufacturers pay fees to the group purchasing organization for access to its customers. The fees paid by manufacturers might ordinarily be considered illegal kickbacks under the federal anti-kickback law. That safe harbor sticks in the craw of the group purchasing organizations’ critics. “It’s the biggest scam in America, in my opinion,” Phillip Zweig, the executive director and co-founder of Physicians Against Drug Shortages, told me.

The state’s capital, Augusta (population 19,066), is near here, but no one feels slighted that the city isn’t afforded the cachet of Kennebunkport, or that tourist maps show routes up the East Coast that abruptly veer off to Bar Harbor and stop, ignoring the interior. The US could default on its debt as soon as June 5 if the debt ceiling isn't raised by then. That would translate to "7.8 million jobs lost from peak to trough," Yaros said. Other industries would see over half a million jobs lost in this scenario, including construction. "It's something closer to the 2001 recession that we had after the dot-com bubble, and you get about 1.5 million jobs lost from peak to trough," Yaros said. And 1.5 million jobs lost — that's still a huge human toll that was unnecessarily incurred."
CNN —“American Born Chinese,” the new Disney+ show based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name, transports viewers to two distinct realms: Heaven, via iconic Chinese mythology, and Earth, via an American high school. The first centers on Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a Chinese American teenager at a mostly White high school. One of the storylines of "American Born Chinese" is rooted in classic Chinese mythology. But having so much Chinese and Chinese American representation on screen and behind the scenes proved immensely helpful. Gold wobbles as sticky inflation drives up US rate hike bets

Why China and Japan are praying the US won’t default
  + stars: | 2023-05-25 | by ( Laura He | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
China and Japan are the largest foreign investors in American government debt. China was the largest foreign creditor to the United States for more than a decade. The falling value of Treasuries would lead to a drop in Japan and China’s foreign reserves. “If the United States defaults on its debt, it will not only discredit the United States, but also bring real financial losses to China,” it said. Analysts say Beijing has shown little willingness to fully integrate with global financial markets.
