The $15.50 per month price for Netflix's most popular streaming option in the U.S. will remain unchanged, as will a $7 monthly plan that includes intermittent commercials. The increase left Netflix with about 247 million worldwide subscribers, well above the 243.8 million projected by analysts surveyed by FactSet Research. Netflix has picked up more than 16 million subscribers through the first nine months of the year, already eclipsing the 8.9 million subscribers that it added all of last year. The crackdown also has boosted Netflix’s in another way – current subscribers can share their accounts with someone living outside their households by paying higher monthly fees. The higher prices for Netflix's premium plans also seems likely to divert more subscribers into the ad-supported option.

Christopher Luxon, Leader of the National Party arrives at his election party after winning the general election to become New Zealand’s next prime minister in Auckland, New Zealand, October 14, 2023. National won 50 seats and the right-wing, free-market ACT Party won 11, securing a majority of just one seat in the 121-seat parliament, according to provisional results from the Electoral Commission. If they do, National may need the support of populist New Zealand First and its leader Winston Peters to form a government. National's leader Christopher Luxon said he would wait for the final count to come in but was talking with both ACT and New Zealand First. Parliament has to meet with six weeks of the official election result but there is no date for when a government must be formed.

Christopher Luxon, Leader of the National Party waves to supporters at his election party after winning the general election to become New Zealand’s next prime minister in Auckland, New Zealand, October 14, 2023. He said he had spoken with the leader of the conservative ACT New Zealand, David Seymour, twice on Saturday and believed the two parties would work constructively. National "will be coalescing with the ACT party and also with New Zealand First and we just don't know yet what dynamic that's going to bring." National's campaign manager Chris Bishop warned the party might lose at least one seat when the special votes are counted. If National and ACT lose a seat, they would need to reach an agreement with the populist New Zealand First.

CNN —Hackers aligned with Vietnam tried to use social media platforms X and Facebook to install spyware on the phones of dozens of high-profile targets, including US lawmakers, United Nations officials and CNN journalists, Amnesty International said Monday. Researchers with Google’s Threat Analysis Group, which tracks state-backed hackers, told CNN the Twitter account spreading the spyware appears to be based in Vietnam. For years, cybersecurity researchers and human rights activists have documented the proliferation of spyware designed to break into mobile phones and steal their contents. “Clearly these tools are being exported from the EU to states with terrible human rights records,” Ó Cearbhaill, of Amnesty International, told CNN. “Meanwhile, if European lawmakers won’t bring consequences to reckless vendors, they need to get comfortable with being targeted,” Scott-Railton told CNN.

Amazon Prime members in the US will soon be able to get free grocery delivery orders from Amazon Fresh when they spend over $100 on the site, Insider has learned. In an email to Insider, Claire Peters, Amazon's worldwide VP of Amazon Fresh, said the change will go into effect Thursday afternoon. Amazon offers grocery delivery to Prime members in more than 3,500 cities and towns across the U.S. Non-Prime members in a dozen metro areas, including Austin, Boston, and San Diego, can also receive grocery deliveries. Amazon is considering a separate, standalone grocery subscription service for Prime members, as Insider previously reported . The internal document about the new Fresh fee structure reflects Amazon's willingness to keep investing in the Fresh grocery business.

Netflix replaced its top advertising executive, Jeremi Gorman, after just a year, in a surprise shakeup of its nascent ads business. Insiders said they believed the choice of Reinhard to replace Gorman was a move designed to help sell the advertising business internally. This summer, the company eliminated its lowest-priced ad-free tier to incentivize customers to sign up for the ads tier. Trading data shows that retail investors are focused on funds that generate income and are relatively insulated from the moves in interest rates, the firm said in a note on Thursday. "As bond prices continue to drop we've seen a surge in Treasury ETF purchases from the retail community over the past week. Vanda also pointed out that gold stocks and ETFs have also been climbing in September, another sign of a defensive mindset for investors. Investors have been buying stocks, too, but in the form of broad market ETFs such as the SPDR S & P 500 Trust (SPY) rather than individual stocks, according to Vanda. "When the stock market is performing poorly, retail investors tend to favor these products because the equity market tends to rise in the long term, and as a result, the retracement offers a 'safe' upside potential.

Value investing can be challenging, humbling, and even lonely, as fund manager Sam Peters has learned over the last three decades. Markets are usually efficient, Peters acknowledged, meaning that stocks usually trade near their fair value. Thanks to this method, Peters' portfolio often has an unconventional combination of companies that offers diversification with the potential to compound abnormally large returns over time. Peters added: "I think we're going to be in a higher nominal rate environment, higher inflation environment, higher rate environment. Such a setup would favor value stocks over their growth peers, Peters said.
