Sept 13 (Reuters) - A convicted murderer who escaped from a Pennsylvania jail last month was recaptured on Wednesday after eluding an expanding manhunt for weeks and unnerving residents in the suburbs west of Philadelphia, state police said on social media. School districts canceled classes for a day after Cavalcante was seen on security-camera video on a public garden trail. More than a week after his escape, he stole a van and drove about 25 miles (40 km) before abandoning the vehicle. He also stole a rile from a garage as the owner of the house who fired several shots at him. After his escape from the county jail, authorities had offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

“Our nightmare is finally over and the good guys won,” Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said Wednesday. The theft and shooting ultimately may have been a turning point in the intense search by hundreds of law enforcement officers. About 500 law enforcement officers – including the Pennsylvania State Police, FBI, ATF, and the US Marshals – searched the area of the shooting. At 8:18 a.m., a Chester County dispatcher said they had their man. “The radio room, Chester County government and the various other agencies working on the prisoner escape are proud to announce the subject is in custody.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A group photo of about two dozen law officers in tactical gear posing with escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante minutes after his capture Wednesday in southeastern Pennsylvania drew criticism from policing reform advocates and some members of the public. Policing experts said the celebratory moment after the grueling 14-day search for the armed suspect was inappropriate and dehumanizing. Photos of Cavalcante immediately after being arrested, with the police dog pinning him down, circulated widely on social media Wednesday in the hours after the arrest was announced. The photos did not include information about who took them, but they were taken inside the secured perimeter where only law enforcement officers were allowed. If I was on the scene as the public affairs officer representing a law enforcement agency, I would have discouraged it.”

Pennsylvania State Police posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that the department was pursuing Danelo Souza Cavalcante in South Coventry Township. Cavalcante slipped out of the 8-square-mile (13-square-kilometer) search area over the weekend, stole a dairy delivery van that had been left unlocked with the keys in it. He abandoned it more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of the search area, after unsuccessfully seeking help at the homes of two former colleagues late Saturday, police said. Even though Cavalcante slipped through the perimeter, it won't make things easier, Caine suggested. Bivens declined to discuss whether Cavalcante has received assistance from others, but he said no such arrests have been made.

Cavalcante shed the sweatshirt he was seen wearing on security cameras and was now believed to be shirtless, Bivens said. There have been multiple sightings of Cavalcante who has stolen a vehicle and has attempted to contact several people for help.
