When it comes to Donald Trump, House Republicans do a convincing pantomime of love. They grovel for his favor, gush about getting his endorsement and speak and vote in line with his desires. They’re half partisan, half courtesan. That’s the truth of the Trump era, and that’s the moral of the 2024 exodus from Congress. More than two dozen House Republicans, along with more than two dozen House Democrats, have headed or are headed for the exits, but the largeness of those numbers — which track with those in other election years over the past decade — don’t tell the story.

In some ways, this is classic behavior from Trump and follows multiple previous social media threats to judges, political opponents and anyone who angers him. Trump’s attacks on the judiciary play into the foundation of his political career — that he’s a rebel outsider tearing down a political system his supporters believe disdains them. In itself, the tape is an affront to the legal system and the judiciary. If the principle were applied to its full extent, it could destroy the nonpartisan legal system. In his “State of the Union” interview Sunday, Lawler, an up-and-coming New York Republican, demonstrated how Trump’s rhetoric overshadows his party.

CNN —A federal court said Thursday that it will allow a US House election in South Carolina for Republican Rep. Nancy Mace’s seat to proceed under a map it had previously declared unconstitutional. In a brief order, the judges in the case said they had little choice, given a fast-approaching deadline to prepare for the primary election for the state’s down-ballot contests. South Carolina officials appealed to the US Supreme Court, and the justices heard arguments in the case in October. They said they recognized that it’s unusual to allow an election to proceed under a map they had deemed invalid. Mace won reelection in 2022 by 14 points, after winning the seat under the previous map by a single point two years earlier.

On the surface, this double dislike seems puzzling: Shouldn’t one of the two parties have figured out how to elevate a more popular general election candidate?
