CNN —A trio of endangered gray wolves were found dead in southern Oregon and federal officials are offering a $50,000 reward for information about their deaths. The reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest, criminal conviction or civil penalty assessment related to the animals’ deaths. Gray wolves that live in the western two-thirds of Oregon are a protected species because they are listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service. CNN has reached out to the US Fish and Wildlife Service for more information about the circumstances of the deaths. Anyone with information about the case should contact the federal agency or Oregon State Police, the service said.

CNN —A jury has awarded climate scientist Michael Mann more than $1 million in a defamation lawsuit he brought against a former scholar and a media personality who lampooned Mann’s work. A jury in the Washington, DC, Superior Court civil case awarded Mann $1 million in punitive damages and a dollar from each defendant in compensatory damages. Mann had also sued the National Review and Competitive Enterprise Institute. Mann intends to appeal that 2021 decision, which said the Competitive Enterprise Institute and National Review could not be held liable for defamation, according to multiple reports. However, Mann’s is the latest in a recent string of defamation trial victories for plaintiffs or large settlements – most notably including E. Jean Carrol’s $83.3 million verdict against former President Donald Trump.

It's a story increasingly familiar in the energy industry: Some utility companies don't properly assess the risks wildfires pose to their operations. The primary purpose is to prevent power lines from igniting a wildfire during periods of high fire danger. The lawsuit also alleges the company "inexcusably kept their power lines energized during the forecasted high-fire danger conditions." A PG&E utility worker locates a gas main line in the rubble of a home burned down by wildfire in Paradise, California, Nov. 13, 2018. Several of those agencies track statewide wildfire information, but most did not keep track of the names of utility companies associated with wildfire incidents.

A contrarian indicator from Bank of America implies the S&P 500 will rise 14% over the next year. Although US stocks have been on a tear lately, professional investors aren't getting too excited. The S&P 500's rally to record highs in late January has been met with skepticism by Wall Street, according to Bank of America. That could be a reason for caution — or a sign that stocks have more room to run. An elevated reading on the SSI suggests that professional investors advise shifting toward stocks — a sign of excessive optimism that warrants selling.

Beyond fear of pain and temporary disfigurement from missing teeth, I had another major concern: I was addicted to heroin in my 20s. As an expert on addiction, I knew that a return to compulsive drug use wasn’t inevitable with medical opioid exposure. As a result, some languish in extreme pain because they believe that drug exposure will cause them to lose control and immediately return to active addiction. There is much misinformation about how opioid pain treatment affects people in recovery and those at high risk of addiction. Understanding how psychoactive drugs and addictions really work is crucial for better managing medical opioid use — and ending policies that interfere with both prevention and recovery.
