NEW YORK (AP) — Retailers are kicking off the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season on Friday with a bevy of discounts and other enticements. The group has forecast that U.S. holiday sales will rise 3% to 4% for November through December, compared with a 5.4% growth of a year ago. For the holiday 2021 season, sales for the two-month period surged 12.7%. WASHINGTON (AP) — Illegal border crossings from Mexico fell 14% in October from a month earlier, U.S. authorities said Tuesday, ending a three-month streak of big increases. U.S. officials highlighted the resumption of deportation flights to Venezuela on Oct. 18, shortly after Venezuelans replaced Mexicans as the largest nationality appearing at the border. Arrests for illegal crossings totaled 188,778 for all nationalities in October, down from 218,763 in September, which was the second-highest month on record. Arrests had more than doubled over the previous three months as migrants and smugglers adjusted to new asylum regulations introduced in May. Including those legal pathways, migrants crossed the border 240,988 times in October, down 11% from 269,735 in September.

The market is beginning to price in the effect of the new El Niño weather pattern, Morgan Stanley said. Mentions of "El Niño" in earnings conference calls have also been on the rise. That's because the upcoming El Niño phenomenon has come into clearer focus, allowing Wall Street to predict who the top winners and losers could be. "Extreme weather events are broadening and strengthening," Morgan Stanley analysts led by Javier Martinez de Olcoz wrote in a note issued Tuesday. On the flip side, insurance stocks as well as Brazilian sugar and ethanol producers trading way higher.
