☆ Eiffel Tower ticket prices to rise by 20% to help cover renovation costs

CNN —France’s iconic Eiffel Tower is increasing its ticket prices by 20%, CNN’s affiliate BFMTV has reported, to help cover the costs of renovation work and financial losses during the coronavirus pandemic. An adult ticket including an elevator ride to the summit of the Parisian landmark will cost €35.30 ($38.31) from June 17 onwards, rising from €29.40 ($31.91), BFMTV reported. In both years, operating costs were around triple that of the the landmark’s overall turnover, SETE said. Renovation work is also behind the cost increase, including “lead prevention measures” related to the painting of the tower, BFMTV reported. The painting work is expected to last until 2027 while work is also planned on the elevators, which will lead to occasional closures.

The 1989 “Study for Portrait of José Capelo” is the fourth painting to be recovered of the group, which is estimated to be worth a combined €25 million. Designed and engineered in collaboration with the Italian race car manufacturer Dallara, it’s low and wide with an enormous rear wing and a large vertical rudder. For the commission, which marks the 20th BMW Art Car, Mehretu chose to adapt one of her most famous works: The painting “Everywhen,” which is now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The first woman to take on a BMW Art Car was South African artist Esther Mahlangu, who in 1991 painted a 525i sedan. In 1996, Holzer covered a BMW Le Mans race car in the words “Protect Me From What I Want,” among other provocative phrases. Esther Mahlangu's 'Art Car' featured the bold colors and geometric patterns used in the traditional arts and crafts of the Southern Ndebele people.

CNN —Kehinde Wiley, the American artist best known for painting former US President Barack Obama’s official portrait, has denied accusations of sexual assault. In an Instagram post shared Sunday, British-Ghanaian artist and curator Joseph Awuah-Darko alleged Wiley sexually assaulted him twice in 2021. Awuah-Darko said the first incident occurred on June 9, 2021, at a dinner held at the Noldor Artist Residency in Ghana, to celebrate Wiley’s work. In Sunday’s Instagram post, he wrote that reporting the assault in Ghana “would have been problematic at best — dangerous at worst,” given the country’s broader attitudes towards LGBTQ people. Over the course of his monthlong criminal trial, the evidence against Donald J. Trump has piled up. And a parade of 18 witnesses who together told a compelling story: that Mr. Trump orchestrated a conspiracy to suppress sex scandals during the 2016 election, and after winning, sought to bury a porn star’s story for good. But the 19th and final witness of their case — the only one to directly link Mr. Trump to the 34 business records he is charged with falsifying — is Michael D. Cohen. Though Mr. Cohen got off to a strong start, Mr. Trump’s lawyer eventually hammered his credibility, highlighting his criminal record and painting him as a serial liar bent on taking down the former president. CNN —King Charles III’s first official portrait was unveiled this week, and I’m sure his majesty would agree it’s a stirring sight. Unfortunately for Yeo, Charles and the butterfly, nothing about the portrait has garnered nearly so much comment as its dominant color. Besides these ceremonial outings, Charles has recently been less prominent in British public life than ever, particularly following the announcement in February of his cancer diagnosis. Charles’ private wealth dwarfs that of any other member of his family. While public auction sales are declining in the art world, private sales — done behind closed doors between discreet buyers and sellers — are growing. Classic cars are also seeing a shift to private sales, especially with the most expensive and rare models. But its newly formed RM Sotheby's private sales division has seen its sales more than quadruple over the past four years, according to Shelby Myers, global head of private sales for RM Sotheby's. The rise in private sales for classic cars, art, real estate and other markets is being driven by social media, technology and cooling prices for collectibles. "They're leaving money on the table," said real estate broker Noble Black of Douglas Elliman.

CNN —Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa — one of the most famous paintings in the world — is shrouded in mystery; from questions around the figures identity, to her puzzling, enigmatic expression. Now, at least one of the artwork’s secrets has been revealed, according to a geologist based in Italy. Ann Pizzorusso, who is both a geologist and an art historian specializing in Leonardo and the Renaissance era, believes she has deduced the location of the Mona Lisa using her geological expertise. “Because when the glacier moved it scoured out certain pieces of land.”Pizzorusso believes Lake Como, the glacial lake dating back around 10,000 years, is in the background of the Mona Lisa. “We don’t know who (Mona Lisa) is, some believe she was a rich Tuscan merchant’s wife,” she said, referring to a popular historical theory that proposes the figure was based on Italian noblewoman Lisa Gherardini.

Police officers on Thursday night raided a complex at the University of California, Berkeley, that had been occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters, taking several people away in handcuffs. A university spokesman said at least 12 people had been arrested, but that the number was expected to grow. The new encampment sprang up at the Anna Head complex on Wednesday after demonstrators dismantled another larger camp earlier this week following a tentative agreement with university officials. Some in the splinter group remained overnight in the complex, a fire-damaged structure near People’s Park, while others camped in tents outside it, hanging Palestinian flags and spray-painting the area. Around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, dozens of officers from the California Highway Patrol and local police and sheriff’s departments began surrounding the area, using bullhorns to order protesters to disperse within 30 minutes or face arrest.

Rinehart has reportedly called for the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) to remove her portrait, one of 21 individual works that make up a single piece in Namatjira’s exhibition “Australia in Colour,” from display.
