According to Drew, industry practice now involves detailed notes of the materials and techniques used to restore a piece. The hope is that these notes will stay with the painting into its new life for years to come. Sometimes it is a faulty repair, like in the painting Drew is working on, or sometimes the material simply ages poorly. "[People] would use materials that would change differently from the original materials because they weren't thinking about reversibility, they could be quite difficult to remove," Khandekar said. "Now, we want to use things that stay soluble that can be easily taken off without damaging or changing the original material."

Make It New and Difficult: The Music of Arnold Schoenberg
  + stars: | 2023-07-28 | by ( John Adams | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
SCHOENBERG: Why He Matters, by Harvey SachsIn 1955 Henry Pleasants, a critic of both popular and classical music, issued a cranky screed of a book, “The Agony of Modern Music,” which opened with the implacable verdict that “serious music is a dead art.” Pleasants’s thesis was that the traditional forms of classical music — opera, oratorio, orchestral and chamber music, all constructions of a bygone era — no longer related to the experience of our modern lives. Composers had lost touch with the currents of popular taste, and popular music, with its vitality and its connection to the spirit of the times, had dethroned the classics. One could still love classical music, but only with the awareness that it was a relic of the past and in no way representative of our contemporary experience. While Pleasants’s signaling the ascendance of popular music was right, much of the rest of “The Agony of Modern Music” was fallacious, not least its way of according value to a work of art based on the size of its audience. And for a large part of its public, no composer is more emblematic of that persistent feeling of alienation between composer and listener than Arnold Schoenberg.

Artist-Designed Party Hats, and How to Recreate Them
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( Coco Romack | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In the United States, party hats — those ubiquitous, cone-shaped signifiers of children’s birthdays and summer picnics — have their roots in a less celebratory phenomenon: the pointed dunce caps used as disciplinary tools in schools throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. It’s a reminder that even the most unassuming objects can have complex meanings — something that artists, several of whom have turned to party attire for inspiration, have long known. The students of the Bauhaus, the influential German design academy founded in 1919, took their costume parties as seriously as their studies, dressing up as monstrous creatures and mechanical humanoids. And in 1972, the Spanish painter Salvador Dalí designed several fantastical ensembles for the infamous Surrealist Ball, a lavish gathering held at the French estate of the baroness Marie-Hélène de Rothschild. From there, imaginations ran free, yielding headdresses that resemble, among other things, a rainbow-colored palm tree, a coral reef and an otherworldly drinking helmet.

In “The Slip,” Prudence Peiffer’s tenderly researched group biography, six visual artists in different seasons of life and seeking different aesthetic ideals met Barr’s challenge with an unlikely spirit of concert. Beside him is his art school friend Jack Youngerman, painter of shaggy color fields in organic, almost floral forms. Grown bored in postwar Paris, the Jersey boy and the Kentuckian relocated to the abandoned sail-making lofts of Coenties Slip, an old manufacturing block in the toe of Manhattan. From 1956 to around 1964, an artist colony and some truly epochal art took shape there. That scene has long fascinated critics but never been the subject of a researched narrative history until now.

When Gabi Jimenez, a French Spanish Romani painter, first heard several years ago that a major museum in France was planning an exhibition on Romani culture and history, he said he thought it would be “a mess.”The story of the Roma, Jimenez said, has long been told by outsiders who depict them at best as itinerant slackers and at worst as unhygienic thieves. Past shows about Romani people have typically featured pictures of bedraggled children and women breastfeeding near caravans. “I told myself: ‘We’re going to get all the stereotypes again,’” he said. Except this time, Romani people were shaping the narrative. The exhibition — which runs through Sept. 4 at the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean, in Marseille, France, and features some 200 artworks and objects — is billed as the first of its kind, bringing together contributions from multiple Romani artists and curators who share their culture on their own terms.

Everything changed when Ryan Gosling, the twice-Oscar-nominated star of “Half Nelson,” “La La Land,” “The Notebook,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “Drive” was sent the script for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie. His platinum, almost white-bleached hair has lit up every interview, radiating the “Kenergy” he references like punctuation. Asked by one reporter how we might “find our Kenergy,” Gosling replied without missing a beat: “It’s there the whole time… Look no further. LONDON, July 20 (Reuters) - More than 150 works of art have been brought together for what auction house Christie's says is the largest exhibition of Arab art to take place in London. Titled "Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World", the show is divided into two sections and features items from across the region, spanning 80 years and various mediums. The non-selling "Kawkaba: Highlights from the Barjeel Art Foundation" is a gender-balanced collection featuring some 100 pieces. "It's usually the quiet season for us because we don't have sales, so we decided to organise this exhibition to bring people to discover Arab art and culture," he said. The exhibition, with free entry, runs through Aug. 23 at Christie's London headquarters.

The 10-episode series, “The Banksy Story,” includes a recording of what may be the graffiti artist’s voice from a recovered 2005 interview with US National Public Radio (NPR). “You can’t make an omelet (without breaking eggs),” he replies, before adding: “That’s the thing: Mindless vandalism takes a lot more thought than most people would imagine.”Since the 2005 interview, Banksy has become a household name. Bansky’s street art is currently featuring in his first official exhibition in 14 years. “Banksy: Cut & Run” at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, Scotland, features stencils used in work throughout his career, from the late 1980s to recent pieces made this year.

Northeast of Paris, Pantin is the base of the Hermès luxury brand and some cultural powerhouses as well, notably the Centre National de la Danse and an exhibition space from Thaddeus Ropac, one of Paris’s most well-known art gallerists. Staying in Pantin also offers quick access to top cultural venues in Paris’s 19th arrondissement. The Philharmonie de Paris complex includes a Jean Nouvel-designed concert hall and music museum, while the nearby Grande Halle de la Villette hosts exhibitions and performances. You get the same kitchen, cooks, dining room and savoir-faire, but the whole package is easier to reserve — and to pay for. The lines to get into the Pantheon, one of Rome’s most famous ancient sites, were high-season typical, snaking past the obelisk-topped fountain in the middle of the square to the cafes at the back. But they were especially slow-moving on Monday, the first day that the Italian Culture Ministry introduced an entrance ticket, priced at 5 euros, to enter the 2,000-year-old monument. Hotly debated for years, the ticketing plan was announced in March by the culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, who said that charging a small fee to help maintain the most popular cultural site in Italy — with about nine million visitors a year — “was an objective based on common sense.”The equivalent of about $5.50 might be a small price to pay to see one of the world’s most iconic monuments — where the painter Raphael is buried — but the new fee has been accompanied by stumbling blocks.

Shares will be valued at around $100 each and will trade on a newly formed art stock exchange in Liechtenstein. By splitting a work's cost into more-affordable shares, retail investors can join the market without having to pay millions of dollars. While other companies have offered fractionalized ownership for artwork before, Artex is the first to take a piece public, allowing shares to be traded more easily.
