Temu, the U.S. shopping app owned by Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo , aired a commercial during the Super Bowl. But Temu's effort highlights its ambition to crack the U.S. e-commerce market, following in the footsteps of another Chinese online shopping company Shein. Chinese e-commerce companies from Alibaba to JD.com and now Pinduoduo have looked to expand overseas in the past few years. Auto ads, usually among the most popular during the Super Bowl, were mostly absent this year in another sign of reduced spending by automakers grappling with a tough economy and shrinking consumer wallets. Data from research firm Edo showed that Warner Bros Discovery's (WBD.O) 45-second "The Flash" trailer with two Batmans - Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck - was 24 times more effective than the median Super Bowl LVII ad. The Super Bowl is one of the most lucrative hours for advertisers hoping to grab the attention of over a 100 million people watching the game. On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs secured a dramatic 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles to claim their second Super Bowl victory in four years. The average cost of a 30-second Super Bowl spot this year was about $7 million, an 84% surge from ten years ago, data from Statista showed.

Premarket stocks: Bonds are back, but for how long?

New York CNN —Stocks soared on Friday to their best day in more than a month. But the big turnaround story during the short first week of the year isn’t just about equities, it’s also about bonds. Bonds are particularly sensitive to those increases — as rates are hiked, the price of existing bonds falls as investors prefer the new debt that will soon be issued with those higher interest payouts. This time around, investors are scooping up bonds as they anticipate the pace of Fed interest rate hikes will soon ease. Core bonds, or US investment grade debt, tend to perform well during Fed rate hike pauses.
Hong Kong CNN —Chinese tech giants are witnessing a dream start to the year. US-listed shares of Chinese e-commerce firms Alibaba (BABA), JD.com (JD) and Pinduoduo (PDD) added $53 billion to their combined market value on Wednesday. The surge comes as investors are feeling optimistic that Chinese regulators will go easy on tech firms this year and also introduce measures to boost growth in the industry. The change in sentiment comes after Jack Ma’s Ant Group won a key approval for capital expansion. Chinese tech companies have faced a sweeping regulatory crackdown since late 2020, which drove investors away.

The S&P index recorded no new 52-week high and one new low, while the Nasdaq recorded 73 new highs and 23 new lows. Pinduoduo's revenue increased 65% to 35.50 billion yuan ($4.99 billion) in the quarter ended Sept. 30, surpassing estimates of 30.94 billion yuan, according to Refinitiv data.
