Tired after eating? Here’s why, and how to fix it
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
The tendency to get tired after eating isn’t inherently suggestive of something amiss. If you had a meal high in fat — such as fried foods or pizza — that could make you feel tired. “That can really be an energy zapper.”Just like high-sugar foods, sugary drinks can also make you feel tired once the crash hits, Stefanski said. Choosing more balanced meals and snacks can help you feel less tired after eating, experts said. The test measures average blood sugar levels and shows how much glucose is attached to hemoglobin in red blood cells, Stefanski said.

Relics of an ancient Roman cargo ship were found near Rome on Friday. The vessel was filled with hundreds of Roman vases, and is estimated to be more than 20 meters long. The vessel, dating back to the second or first century BC, was found loaded with hundreds of ancient Roman terracotta jars, also known as amphorae. The ship was likely part of the Cura Annonae, an ancient Roman body that was charged with importing and distributing grain to the residents of the cities of Rome. Last year, archaeologists discovered a similar shipwreck dating back nearly 2,200 years stocked with jars used to transport food off the coast of Palermo, Sicily.

Olive oil may lower risk of death from dementia
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
Whether olive oil is linked with risk of dementia-related death had never been studied until now, according to the authors. Over a follow-up period of 28 years, regardless of diet quality, eating more than half a tablespoon of olive oil per day was associated with a 28% lower risk of dying from dementia, compared with participants who never or rarely consumed olive oil. Additionally, replacing a daily teaspoon of mayonnaise or margarine with the same amount of olive oil was correlated with an 8% to 14% lower risk of dementia-related death, the authors found. “It is also possible that olive oil has an indirect effect on brain health by benefiting cardiovascular health,” she added. Besides cooking with olive oil, you can also use it to make salad dressings or vinaigrettes, mayonnaise, pesto or bread dip.

Cristina Quicler | Afp | Getty ImagesSEVILLE, Spain — The day-to-day reality of scorching summer heat in Spain is taking its toll. The mercury in the southern Spanish city of Seville hit 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) on July 20, shortly before national elections failed to produce a clear winner. "During the day I work here where I have air conditioning but the walk home is ... agony," Sánchez told CNBC. Tacho Rufino, economist at the University of Seville, told CNBC that when classes are not in session, he lives in Cádiz in the southwest. Olive oil prices soared further into record-breaking territory this month and analysts have told CNBC that high prices could be here "for some time to come."

This Hummus Holds Up After 800 Years
  + stars: | 2023-07-26 | by ( Ligaya Mishan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
You take chickpeas, hard and dry, and boil them until their skins loosen and they reveal themselves, tender little hulks with souls of butter. For much of human civilization, recipes were rarely written down, and of those that were, almost none have survived. You might recognize this as hummus. Notably absent from the recipe is garlic, despite its ubiquity in the cooking of the Arab world at the time. It’s not certain exactly when garlic was introduced to the dish: Nasrallah notes that there is no documentation of hummus recipes after the 14th century until the late 19th century.

The advantage of using ChatGPT is that it can take you down any track you want. It's even possible to uncover hidden gems – if you ask the right questions. To uncover a genuine Tuscan experience, use prompts such as: "Can you recommend authentic restaurants locals love that are known for quality and flavor near Val d'Orcia, with websites and reviews?" ChatGPT understands queries about where locals like to eat, and being specific gets better results. To find "hidden gem" restaurants in Val d'Orcia, the more specific the question, the better, says travel writer Lisa Lucas.

CNN —Results are in from the highly anticipated clinical trial on the Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay or MIND diet — a diet designed specifically to boost the brain — and they are less stellar than anticipated. Actually, the MIND diet did improve the brains of those who followed it for three years. Past studies have shown both the MIND diet and the Mediterranean diet significantly reduced the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. The MIND diet also assimilates elements of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (or DASH) diet. The DASH diet has been shown to reduce blood pressure and is the American Heart Association’s top diet.

The Martini Has Lost Its Mind
  + stars: | 2023-07-13 | by ( Becky Hughes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Consider the paradoxical thought experiment known as the Ship of Theseus: If Athenians removed and replaced every plank of Theseus’s ship so that none of the original wood remained, would it still be Theseus’s ship? Alternatively, take a dirty martini: gin, vermouth, olive brine and a garnish. Is it still a dirty martini? Jazzton Rodriguez, the creator of what he calls the chicken soup martini, believes it is. “People are starting to explore what the dirty martini can be, as a template,” said Mr. Rodriguez, who co-writes the blog Very Good Drinks.

"The government is there and is ready to do its part to help Italians in the best possible way", Meloni said in a message that presented the 500,000-euro scheme as relief against high inflation. However, the card is reserved for households with at least three members, preferably with children, in a move seen as favouring traditional families. Noting that the allowance amounts to about one euro per day for a year, she described it as a "zero impact" policy. "Being in need is no longer enough, now you need to be in need and also be a certain type of person considered deserving of help," he said. But it was the tart, earthy, tingly, subtly sweet notes provided by the sumac and Aleppo pepper that made such a lasting impression. Extra-virgin olive oil, yogurt and feta cheese are dietary mainstays, along with seasonal produce, legumes, whole grains and lean proteins. Made from deep-red Halaby chile peppers, Aleppo pepper is named for the Syrian city where it once grew in abundance. Dukkah, a blend of nuts, seeds and warm spices, makes a savory, crunchy topping on everything from soups to salads. Baharat is just one of a combination of warm spices that can punch up a chicken dish the Mediterranean way.

UPS handles about a fourth of packages shipped each day in the United States, according to the Pitney Bowes Parcel Shipping Index, many of them for small businesses like Ms. Keeler’s company. The recipe is in his book “ The Blue Zones American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100 ." “If you want to avoid gas, the way to start with beans is with a couple tablespoons a day,” Buettner said. For quicker soup, Buettner suggests using a pressure cooker for 25 minutes — except for lentils, which only take about 5 minutes. “If you want to store it more than 2 days, it’s better to freeze it.”This recipe is adapted from “The Blue Zones American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100” by Dan Buettner.

Calling itself the green heart of Italy, the landlocked region of Umbria is known for its truffles and olive oil, roast pork and sausage, wine and cheese. It also has great cultural riches — many of them in hill towns like Orvieto, Perugia and Assisi. The cultural and culinary treasures of the region can easily be reached by train from Rome, which lies just to the south, or from Florence, to the north. From Rome, a logical starting point is Orvieto, only a little over an hour away, with trains available about once an hour. It's been a tough go for investment bankers recently. As if all that wasn't bad enough for bankers, The Wall Street Journal recently reported that even lawyers are now making more money than them. It turns out the culprit, as is often the case on Wall Street, is inflation. It's getting really tough these days to make the case for getting into investment banking. That begs the question: Why bother getting into investment banking at all?

You Don’t Have to Wait for Peak Tomato

While it has been summer for me mentally since the first warm weekend of May, the season officially kicked off yesterday with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. I’ve anticipated this time of year with equal parts enthusiasm and dread. (Being a summer baby who can’t stand the heat leads to some complicated feelings.) Then there are the meals that punctuate these summer pursuits: tomato sandwiches in the sand, chilled tomato salads in the grass, icy pitchers of gazpacho passed around a rickety wrought-iron table. In a few weeks, when tomatoes are at their most delicious, I’ll adorn them with olive oil, red wine vinegar and a Parmesan and olive bread-crumb mixture flecked with fennel seeds, a recipe courtesy of Christian Reynoso.

Luciano Spalletti and the Power of Walking Away

Luciano Spalletti’s farm sits high on a ridge outside Montaione, a peaceful, strikingly pretty Italian village set on a hilltop an hour or so southwest of Florence. It is picture-perfect Tuscany: cobbled piazzas lined with cafes; echoing, cobbled streets; a panorama of deep blue skies and verdant olive groves on rolling hills. The stretch of the Tuscan countryside Spalletti calls home is not quite so well-touristed as, say, Chianti. But Spalletti grew up here, in the medieval walled city of Certaldo, and he saw in the farm the chance to draw more people to the region. The view stretches all the way from Pisa, in the west, to the Apennines in the east.

Grocery prices in Europe have been on the rise. Britain — where food inflation has reached 45-year highs — is discussing a similar move. In comparison, U.S. food prices rose 7.7% in April from a year earlier, 8.2% in Japan and 9.1% in Canada. Such controls could actually make food inflation worse by increasing demand from shoppers but discouraging new supply, he said. "The current food price shock does not warrant such intervention," Shearing said.
