The most memorable event of the 2023 baseball season took place on Tuesday night, over a week before the MLB regular season is set to begin. With a full count and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of a one-run game, Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani stood on the mound in Miami and faced his Angels teammate, Mike Trout. It was the U.S. against Japan in the title game of the World Baseball Classic. But it was also the marquee moment baseball fans have been hoping to see since Ohtani made his MLB debut in 2018: The two greatest baseball players in the world, performing in a high-leverage moment in a championship game. The twist was that they were opponents, not teammates.

LOS ANGELES, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno on Monday said he was no longer interested in selling the team he has owned for 20 years after announcing in August that he was looking for buyers. "This offseason we committed to a franchise record player payroll and still want to accomplish our goal of bringing a World Series Championship back to our fans. The Angels won their lone World Series in 2002, shortly before Moreno purchased it, and the team has struggled in recent years with its last postseason appearance coming in 2014. "Despite strong buyer interest in the Angels, Arte Moreno's love of the game is most important to him," Manfred said. CNN Business —The near collapse this week of FTX, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has sent shockwaves throughout the crypto startup and investment community. Like other crypto companies, FTX has invested heavily in sports sponsorships, including partnerships and naming rights in professional basketball, baseball and Formula One racing. In 2021, FTX inked a reported $135 million, 19-year deal with the NBA’s Miami Heat to rename the American Airlines Arena as FTX Arena. Sports partnership experts say the stadium naming rights are the biggest headache. In a hiring announcement earlier this year, Binance CEO Zhao “CZ” Changpeng said: “It was not easy saying no to Super Bowl ads, stadium naming rights, large sponsor deals a few months ago, but we did.”
