Investors will contend with earnings results from five of the Magnificent Seven companies next week. .SPX 1M mountain S & P 500 "I sort of refer to this period that we're in right now as like a strange brew," said Mark Malek, investment chief at Siebert. On Friday, the Nasdaq Composite hit an all-time high , but the S & P 500 snapped a six-week win streak. In fact, the high concentration of the mega-cap leaders in the S & P 500 spurred Goldman Sachs' David Kostin this month to release a dim long-term forecast for the overall market. HSBC head of equity strategy Nicole Inui upped her S & P 500 year-end target to 5,900.

The Nasdaq Composite index finally made a new all-time high on Friday, its first since July. But history shows there may be more than 10% upside ahead as stocks enter the third year of a bull market, according to DataTrek statistics. DataTrek co-founders Nicholas Colas and Jessica Rabe said they "remain bullish" on U.S. large-cap tech stocks because the average third year of a bull market has brought an increase of just 4.4% for the tech-heavy Nasdaq, the firm's data shows. The data, too, shows that another positive year for Nasdaq is no sure-fire bet. A two-year bull market after a losing year, the pattern we are currently in since the 2022 debacle, has continued into a third year just 60% of the time since 1971.

A torrent of big-name earnings hit the stock market this week — and the majority did not live up to analysts' muted expectations. Of the S & P 500 companies that have reported so far, about 74% of companies have beaten earnings expectations . But their blended earnings growth rate, which includes the reports already out and estimates for those on the docket, is 3.4%, falling short of the 4.2% estimate. The growth rate of just the companies that have posted so far is 3.1%, according to FactSet. Tech stocks buoyed the market on Friday ahead of their looming earnings reports, lifting the Nasdaq Composite to a record high.

Automotive revenue increased 2% to $20 billion from $19.63 billion in the same period a year earlier and is about flat since late 2022. Energy generation and storage revenue soared 52% to $2.38 billion, while services and other revenue, which includes revenue from non-warranty repairs of Tesla vehicles, jumped 29% to $2.79 billion. Earlier this month, Tesla reported third-quarter vehicle deliveries of 462,890. While deliveries increased 6% from a year earlier, they fell shy of analysts’ expectations and followed two straight quarters of year-over-year declines. “Despite ongoing macroeconomic conditions, we expect to achieve slight growth in vehicle deliveries in 2024,” the company said in its earnings deck Wednesday.

S&P 500 futures are muted Thursday night after the broad index ended a three-day negative streak. Futures tied to the broad index added less than 0.1%, as did Nasdaq 100 futures . The Nasdaq Composite joined the S&P 500 in finishing the session in the green, with both lifted by Tesla' s post-earnings rally. A slide in Treasury yields also gave the S&P 500 and Nasdaq upward momentum, according to Megan Horneman, chief investment officer at Verdence. The Dow has fared the worst with a drop of more than 2% as of Thursday's close, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have shed 0.9% and 0.4%, respectively.

Investors should be wary of Tesla 's post-earnings rally, JPMorgan said. The electric vehicle maker reported adjusted earnings per share of 72 cents, topping the expectation of 58 cents from analysts polled by LSEG. Still, the earnings beat appeared to be enough to send shares nearly 16% higher Thursday, making it the best performer in the Nasdaq 100 as the trading day kicked off. Yet JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman has some qualms. While the analyst lifted his price target by $5 to $135, that still suggests the stock can tumble nearly 37%.

Shares of Lilium tanked Thursday after the air taxi firm said in a filing that its two main subsidiaries will file for insolvency in the coming days. The German aerospace startup's shares plunged more than 60% before paring losses to 45% following the news. Lilium was seeking to raise 50 million euros ($54 million) of loans from the state coffers, however its request was rejected by lawmakers. In all, Lilium was trying to raise a convertible loan of 100 million euros. The subsidiaries' planned insolvency filings could result in Lilium ultimately delisting from the Nasdaq Global Select Market, or having its shares suspended.

This, despite the fact that younger investors were more optimistic about the economy, their incomes, their living situations, and their investments. Millennial investors have been deeply scarred by two life-changing crises in their young lives. But if you look at hard numbers from the Federal Reserve about what millennial investors actually own, you can see that this stereotype is misguided. When you compare millennials' cash levels with Gen X's cash levels at the same age, though, the risk aversion becomes clear. But when it comes to younger investors, I think the scars run deeper than worries about a coming downturn.

Investors have been increasingly on edge about the prospect of former President Donald Trump winning the election, a possibility for which Wall Street has been preparing to a greater extent. While polls remain effectively dead-even, Trump’s prospects have grown since the start of this month in political betting markets. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led the decline, ending the day down by 1.6%; while the S&P 500 and Dow both fell about 1%. Recent strong economic data has led traders to question whether the central bank might maintain higher rates for longer than anticipated. The current market environment suggests continued volatility ahead, said Torres, warning of the potential for further yield curve steepening and increased market turbulence ahead.
