The bank's derivatives research team, led by Vishal Vivek, found several stocks reporting next week whose options look relatively cheap. "We find, while the absolute level of implied moves are high, when adjusted for one month realized volatility, implied moves are only in their 18th percentile relative to the past 17 years; we look for names where implied moves are most under-priced heading into earnings. Our past studies have shown implied moves to be correlated with historical earnings-day moves," Vivek wrote. One of the biggest names on the list is Ford , which is scheduled to report on Oct. 26. Straddles are slightly more expensive than directional bets, but they can profit regardless of which way a stock moves.
All 57 House votes against a bill providing more than $40 billion for Ukraine in May came from Republicans. Anderson said some Republicans have viewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's administration as corrupt since Trump's first impeachment trial. House Democrats voted to impeach Trump in 2019 on charges he held up military aid for Kyiv to put pressure on Zelenskiy to investigate one of Biden's sons. Several defense industry executives said they viewed the Republican comments on Ukraine aid as political rhetoric ahead of the midterms, not a threat. A Reuters/Ipsos opinion survey this month showed 73% of Americans felt the United States should continue to support Kyiv.

By pointing to 2027 as the moment when East Asia's power balance may tip in China's favour, Japan's government can rally support for greater defence spending, he added. At a congressional hearing last year, U.S. Indo-Pacific commander Admiral Philip Davidson said that China's threat against Taiwan could "manifest" that year. Japanese defence ministry officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In July, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida won national upper house elections with a pledge to "substantially" increase defence spending. The splurge of defence spending should also benefit U.S. suppliers such as Lockheed, Boeing Co (BA.N) and Northrop Grumman Corp (NOC.N).
Investors should hold off on buying Northrop Grumman in the near term after its strong year-to-date outperformance, JPMorgan says. Analyst Seth Seifman downgraded the defense and aerospace stock to neutral, highlighting the stock's nearly 30% rally this year among his reasons for a downgrade. Northrop Grumman shares are trading at 16.5 times forward earnings relative to peers L3Harris and Lockheed Martin trading under 13 times. Despite these near-term concerns, the defense contractor retains strong cash flows and offers an attractive long-term growth profile, Seifman said. The bank's $490 price target suggests a modest 2% decline from Thursday's close price.

Defense company Lockheed Martin is not expected to grow as much as competitors do in the coming years, according to Wells Fargo. Lockheed Martin will be in particularly bad shape if it doesn't win the Future Vertical Lift contract, which has a role in producing future long-range assault aircrafts. This underlies the fact that defense stocks can slide depending on the volatility of geopolitics, Akers said. Shares of Lockheed Martin currently trade at a premium compared to peers, Akers said. Akers also downgraded L3Harris Technologies to equal weight from over weight, while remaining equal weight on Northrop Grumman and overweight on General Dynamics .
The S & P 500 never really got out of control back then — and, relative to bonds, it didn't either. The Fed chairman, correctly, feared the economy was going to crash, and he would have been right. I think that's certainly how people act. I think that most participants have decided there's no hope and they are using an analogue that's 2000-2001 (dot-com bubble bursting) or even 2007 (before the financial crisis and the Great Recession). Autos have been hurt by supply chain but I think that's coming to an end.
