Dec 5 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly (LLY.N) on Tuesday said its recently approved obesity treatment Zepbound is now available in U.S. pharmacies and could cost $550 a month for customers whose health insurance does not cover the drug, or half the list price. Wall Street analysts expect sales of Zepbound to reach about $2 billion in 2024, and for sales of Novo Nordisk's (NOVOb.CO) rival obesity drug Wegovy to hit around $7.5 billion. Still, Schinecker’s obesity bet could turn successful if it ends up undercutting obesity pioneers on prices. With over 1 billion people globally classed as seriously overweight, other drugmakers will follow Roche on the obesity bandwagon.

After encouraging Phase I trial results, the drug is ready to be tested on humans in the second of three trial stages, Roche added. Among recent deals to acquire obesity drug development projects, AstraZeneca (AZN.L) last month agreed to pay up to $2 billion for the rights to an experimental pill from China's Eccogene. Roche will obtain access to Carmot's current R&D portfolio including all clinical and preclinical assets.

Compounding pharmacies prepare custom-made versions of commercially available treatments to meet the specific needs of a patient. Novo Nordisk first sued Brooksville Pharmaceuticals over copycat versions of Wegovy and Ozempic in July. Including the newest lawsuits, Novo Nordisk has filed 12 legal actions against compounding pharmacies, medical spas and weight loss clinics allegedly selling dupes of Wegovy and Ozempic. That puts patients "at risk of taking drug products that are less effective than expected based on their labeling," according to Novo Nordisk. The blockbuster diabetes drug Mounjaro is more effective for weight loss than another highly popular treatment, Ozempic, in overweight or obese adults, according to a large analysis of real-world data published Monday. The results come as both drugs and similar treatments approved for weight loss soar in demand in the U.S. for their ability to help patients shed unwanted pounds over time. Previous head-to-head studies have similarly suggested that Mounjaro is more effective than Ozempic for weight loss and controlling blood sugar in adults with Type 2 diabetes. But Monday's study confirms Mounjaro's edge over Ozempic in a real-world setting, specifically among adults who are overweight or obese. Eli Lilly is pitting Mounjaro against Wegovy, a higher-dose version of Ozempic approved for weight loss, in an ongoing clinical trial in obese or overweight patients.

After 3 months of treatment, patients on Mounjaro had lost an average of 2.3% more body weight than those taking Ozempic, the study also found. By 6 months, the difference had widened to 4.3%, and by 12 months, the Mounjaro group had lost an average of 7.2% more weight. An Eli Lilly spokesperson said the company does not promote or encourage the off-label use of any of its medicines, although its drug is now approved for weight loss. A trial is underway comparing the weight loss formulations of the two injected medicines in patients overweight or obese but without type 2 diabetes.

Thousands of Americans inject them weekly to cut pounds—and are seeing success. Researchers are finding that this class of drugs is changing the world’s understanding of obesity. Their popularity has led to shortages, leaving some patients unable to consistently take them, which has led to the return of cravings and pounds, doctors say. A Reuters analysis of earnings transcripts for the third quarter showed "GLP-1" or alternatives like "obesity" or "weight-loss medications" were mentioned 256 times across 29 U.S. and European healthcare and consumer companies. That's more than double the mentions for the second quarter, when those phrases came up 127 times. While some consumer companies have talked about factors such as fewer calories being consumed, "these kind of large extrapolations" seem to be a bit of a stretch, said BMO Capital analyst Evan Seigerman. For big pharma manufacturers like Pfizer (PFE.N) and Amgen (AMGN.O), analyst questions were aimed at their obesity drug candidates.

In October, Lilly agreed to acquire Point Biopharma in an all-cash deal valued at $1.4 billion to gain access to its experimental therapies that enable precise targeting of cancer. Lilly, which has offered to buy Point Biopharma shares at $12.50 a piece and has all regulatory approvals for the deal, said the price will remain the same during the extended period. The tender offer has been extended in order for the companies to satisfy the minimum tender condition.

Use of Ozempic for weight loss has caused shortages across Europe. Novo Nordisk, which has earmarked $6 billion to boost production in Denmark, said last week the industry was far from being able to produce enough weight-loss drugs to meet global demand. The German association of drug wholesale distributors PHAGRO said in a statement that there was no certainty that exports were causing the shortages. Portugal, Poland, Romania, Belgium, Slovakia and Spain, in turn, have rules in place that likely make it impossible to export the drug, Affordable Medicines said. It also urged "all relevant actors" not to export the drugs.
