LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Federal law that prohibits insurers from denying healthcare based on preexisting conditions, or kicking dependents off their parent’s coverage until age 26, is now codified separately into Michigan law. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Thursday that attempts to duplicate the Affordable Care Act, known as “Obamacare,” into state law. Earlier this year, a federal judge struck down the ACA preventive care provision. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 150 million people in private health plans have benefited from the no-cost preventive services. A number of other states have codified Affordable Care Act provisions into state law.

GM will report third-quarter results Oct. 24, with Ford following on Oct. 26. The strikes have costing GM and Ford more than $500 million, JP Morgan analyst Ryan Brinkman estimated in a note Monday. Ford is now losing $44 million a day, while GM is losing $21 million a day, Brinkman estimated. GM and Ford shares have fallen sharply since July as the standoff with the UAW has intensified. GM has set up a new, $6 billion credit line as insurance against an expanded UAW strike.

Ford, who has been a part of UAW negotiations since 1982, pleaded with union members and leaders to work with the company, instead of against it, to reach a tentative deal to "end to this acrimonious round of talks." Such comments by the great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford are uncharacteristic during contract talks with UAW. Ford, ahead of speaking on stage, told reporters he wanted to "elevate" the conversation about the contract negotiations. This should not be Ford versus the UAW," Ford said. "It should be Ford and the UAW vs. Toyota and Honda, Tesla, and all the Chinese companies that want to enter our home."

“I don’t think there is any way of discussing Teju Cole’s aesthetic without putting front and center this idea of his relentless inventiveness,” the writer Amitava Kumar wrote by email. Cole calls his new novel “a reiteration of my faith in fiction.” But it didn’t come easily or quickly. After “Open City,” Cole began to conceive of a big work of nonfiction on Lagos, his hometown, in the vein of Suketu Mehta’s book “Maximum City,” about Mumbai. That’s thanks to the Home Mortgage Interest Deduction, which lets you write off the interest you pay on your mortgage loan throughout the year. What is the mortgage interest deduction? The mortgage interest deduction is a type of itemized tax deduction that has been around in some form since a federal income tax was introduced in 1913. Mortgage pointsMortgage points—an upfront fee you can pay at closing to lower your interest rate—are another form of mortgage interest, just prepaid. Whether you should take the mortgage interest deduction comes down to the age-old question of itemizing vs. using the standard deduction.

Fain also wants workers at the plants to make top UAW assembly plant wages, which now are $32 per hour. And if lower-paying battery plants aren't union, workers won't have anywhere to get the same wages and benefits. But they also see a future where buyers could switch, and they think wages at the battery plants should match what they make. The UAW, he said, will use this to try to organize other Korean-owned battery plants.

BEAVER ISLAND, Mich. (AP) — A pilot's error during landing caused a 2021 plane crash that killed four people on a Michigan island, federal investigators concluded. The National Transportation Safety Board, which investigated the Nov. 13, 2021 crash on Beaver Island, said in a report released Thursday that the pilot lost control during landing and crashed 300 feet (91 meters) from the airport's runway. While approaching the airport, the plane was observed flying slowly and “‘wallowing’ as if nobody was flying,” the report said. The pilot and three others were killed in the crash; a young girl survived. The pilot was flying for Island Airways, which takes travelers between Beaver Island in northern Lake Michigan and Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan judge is expected to decide Friday morning whether to drop charges against two defendants accused of participating in a fake elector scheme after the state attorney general said the group was “brainwashed” into believing former President Donald Trump won the 2020 election. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, however, may have derailed the case by saying during a virtual event last month that the electors "legit believe" Trump won the election. But it's the only state where the accused false electors face criminal charges. At a Sept. 18 virtual event organized by liberal groups, Nessel said the group would never plea guilty because they “genuinely believe” Trump won the election. Henry and several others, including former Michigan GOP co-chair Meshawn Maddock, are scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination hearing on Oct. 12.

A new Bloomberg model shows a better-than-50% chance a recession could begin this year. According to Anna Wong and Tom Orlik, two chief economists at Bloomberg Economics, the model works "fairly well" at matching previous calls of recession. The loss of workforce and closing of plants were due to the UAW’s contract agreements and restrictive work rules, agreed to by the company under duress. These helped make Detroit uncompetitive.

Michigan is one of seven states where false Electoral College certificates were submitted declaring Trump the winner, despite confirmed results showing he had lost. On Sept. 18, Nessel, a Democrat, told a liberal group during a virtual event that the false electors had been “brainwashed” and “genuinely” believed Trump won in Michigan’. George MacAvoy Brown, an attorney for Henry, said in a statement that the charges require proof that Henry “intended to cheat or deceive someone” and that Nessel's comments show that wasn't the case. SWARTZ CREEK, Mich. (AP) — About five people picketing in the United Auto Workers strike outside a Flint-area General Motors plant suffered minor injuries Tuesday when a vehicle leaving the plant struck them, police said. The striking workers were blocking a driveway, and an employee was trying to leave the Flint Processing Center in Swartz Creek when the collision occurred just before 4 p.m., Chief Matthew Bade of the Metro Police Authority of Genesee County said. The employee drove through the picket line to leave the plant, Bade said. “These people are out here, you know these are my membership, and they’re out here doing a peaceful, legal demonstration." Ford Motor, in the midst of tense contract negotiations with striking United Automobile Workers, said on Monday that it was suspending construction of a battery factory in Michigan because of concerns that the plant might not be able to make products at a competitive price. It was unclear whether the halt was related to negotiations with the union, or to other issues. Ford has come under attack from Republican lawmakers because it plans to manufacture batteries at the plant in Marshall, Mich., using technology licensed from CATL, a Chinese company that is the world’s largest maker of batteries for electric cars. At the same time, Ford has warned that increases in pay and benefits sought by the U.A.W. If unions got all that they were asking for, “we would have to cancel our E.V.

CNN —Few media figures in the last 27 years have had a larger and more profound effect on American political and media life than Rupert Murdoch. Ailes, who helped Richard Nixon get elected president in 1968, specialized in the political use of media. Again, Murdoch is not the only reason for the lack of trust in the media and the flood of disinformation and misinformation. But union leaders say Trump's record in the White House speaks for itself. While the United Auto Workers union has withheld an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race, its leadership has repeatedly rebuffed Trump. Despite Trump's history of success in courting blue-collar workers in previous elections, union leaders say their members would do well to believe their own eyes. Unifor’s talks with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Jeep and Ram, started on Aug. 10 but have been overshadowed by the U.A.W. Ford has an assembly plant and two engine plants in Canada. Unifor selected Ford as the “target” of its talks, meaning it focused on securing the best deal it could from the company before turning to the other two automakers. Ford’s deal in Canada appears to have little bearing on the U.A.W. ; a Ford truck and sport-utility vehicle plant in Wayne, Mich.; and a Stellantis S.U.V.

During the training, the quintet of pooches and their trainers walked through a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint, rode an elevated tram and boarded an airplane. It was all part of an effort to acclimate the dogs to one of the many settings they may experience later in life. The training was led by Paws With A Cause — a Wayland, Michigan-based nonprofit that oversees the custom training of puppies that become assistance dogs for people with disabilities. The group pairs puppies with volunteers who raise and socialize the dogs for the first year of their lives.
