Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Friday that Poland wants to seize Western Ukraine. Russia has often deflected from its own invasion by claiming Poland has its own imperial ambitions. "Emboldened by the current circumstances, Poland has decided that the chance to absorb the remnants of Ukraine is to be taken now, or never," he wrote on Twitter. Speaking Friday, Putin — who launched the 2022 invasion with the hope of overthrowing Kyiv's government — claimed he would not "interfere" in internal Ukrainian affairs. But he accused Poland of also desiring parts of Belarus, a close Russian ally.

Ukraine War Analysis Sea drones and the counteroffensive in CrimeaOn Tuesday, Russia reported its forces had repelled a Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea. The reports highlight Ukraine’s counteroffensive in Crimea, which is being mostly waged through drone and long-range missile strikes. In the Black Sea, Ukraine has opened a new era of naval warfare by employing suicide sea drones — drones armed with explosives designed to ram into targets and detonate. On October 29, 2022, Ukraine used naval drones to attack Russian warships in the port of Sevastopol, home of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. The Crimean Peninsula is connected to Russian-occupied southern Ukraine through just three vulnerable main roads that pass through swampy areas.

Alcaraz needs new rivals for a new era

Certainly the prospect of another showdown at the U.S. Open in a few weeks is exciting, but whether or not 23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic can stretch his career long enough to battle Alcaraz on a regular basis is questionable. 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash said after Alcaraz ended Djokovic's 34-match winning run at the grasscourt slam. Italian Jannik Sinner, 21, beat Alcaraz at last year's Wimbledon but has reached only one Grand Slam semi-final so far, losing to Djokovic in straight sets last week. Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, was outclassed by Alcaraz in the Wimbledon semi-final, lasting less than two hours on Centre Court. Between them they won 65 Grand Slam titles and it has to be hoped that Alcaraz finds a couple of adversaries to share the load as tennis moves into a new era.

This is how Komsomolskaya School Number 1 is marking the opening of a new school desk, a so-called “hero desk” emblazoned with the face and biography of one of Russia’s war dead, once a pupil at this very school. The desks are part of a pan-Russian initiative called the “New School Project” and are funded by “United Russia,” a staunchly pro-Putin party. As of early May, United Russia said there were more than 14,000 desks in 9,000 schools across the country. Local news reports suggest some schools use the desks to reward good behavior or good grades. The desks across the country are standardized: green, with military photographs, a biography, medals awarded (often posthumously) and the soldier’s date of death.

LONDON, July 15 (Reuters) - Carlos Alcaraz will have to kick Novak Djokovic off his Wimbledon throne in Sunday's final because he will not be given an inch, according to seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander. Alcaraz is already world number one and claimed last year's U.S. Open by beating Casper Ruud, but the challenge of Djokovic is "another universe", according to Wilander. "It's really important that Carlos Alcaraz beats Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam final before (Djokovic's career) is over. "Of course Djokovic can lose but I don't think he cares less about that any more," Wilander said. "He's going to come in and play at about 90% the whole time, dipping to maybe 85% and sometimes up to 95%.

If Carlos Alcaraz were more patient, perhaps he could just wait for Novak Djokovic to fade away. At 20, Alcaraz is 16 years younger than the great champion, and the day is likely to come when Djokovic is either retired or in decline, and Alcaraz can claim the tennis kingdom as his own. 1 ranking, and he was the second youngest, after Pete Sampras at 19 years 28 days, to win that tournament in the Open era. It features a potentially riveting matchup between Alcaraz, who defeated Daniil Medvedev, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, in their semifinal on Friday, against Djokovic, who also dismissed Jannik Sinner in straight sets. 2 — the 23-time Grand Slam tournament winner, who is 7-1 in Wimbledon finals, against a young Spaniard playing in his first.

I'm not going to lie, it's a very great match to watch but I'm not going to watch it because I'm going to be too disappointed to not be there," Medvedev told reporters. "But if I watch it on TV, I'm probably going to digest my loss worse because I'm going to be like, 'My God, this forehand, this double-fault, this return, I should have done better'. I'm going to be interested in the live score, but I'm not going to watch it. After being thoroughly outplayed by Alcaraz, Medvedev placed the Spaniard in lofty company, comparing him to the game's old 'Big Three' of Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, winners of 65 Grand Slam titles between them. I would say in general to compare like the Big Three, they're amazing, they win so many Grand Slams, they win so many matches.

"Maybe some people think that it would be a huge relief for me winning Roland Garros, being the only men's tennis player with 23 slams. Alcaraz admitted that the stress and tension of facing Djokovic brought on the debilitating cramps that ruined his chances of winning that showdown just five weeks ago. Djokovic, locked at 1-1 in their head-to-head record, was looking forward to the challenge too. We're both playing well," added Djokovic as he looks to become the oldest man in the Open Era to win the grasscourt major. Majestic Djokovic eases past Sinner to reach Wimbledon final

The 21-year-old Sinner was outclassed, falling flat on the big occasion and allowing Djokovic, 14 years his senior, to turn the screw at key moments in the contest. He let break points slip through his fingers, including two set points in the third, while Djokovic was clinical as usual, applying constant pressure on the Italian's serve and pouncing on opportunities when they arose. Sinner then spurned another chance to break in the fifth game, leaving Djokovic to cruise through the rest of the opener. Djokovic won only six points on the Sinner serve in the first set, but that was all he needed, celebrating with a clenched fist as he strolled back to his chair. The Serbian set up three further break points in the third game of the second set, with Sinner saving the first two before sending a forehand long to fall behind again.

LONDON, July 14 (Reuters) - Spain's Carlos Alcaraz described his thrashing of Daniil Medvedev in Friday's Wimbledon semi-final as one of the best matches of his career but warned there is still more to come. The world number one will now aim to become the first player to beat Novak Djokovic on Centre Court for a decade when he takes on the reigning seven-time champion on Sunday. Asked to evaluate his mauling of Medvedev, Alcaraz said: "I mean, this one probably was one of my best matches, not only on grass but on the Tour. "Probably one of my best matches." "I'll try to get into the court with not as much nerves as I probably had in the French Open semi-final," Alcaraz said.

The Serbian has not lost on Centre Court for 10 years, but Alcaraz said he is ready for the challenge. I dreamed of this since I started to play tennis, to play in a final here. Alcaraz lost to Medvedev in the second round on his Wimbledon debut in 2021, when he was then ranked 75th. Medvedev surrendered serve tamely at 3-4 to allow Alcaraz to bag the first set. Russia has been imprisoning Ukrainian civilians since the early months of the invasion. A document shows that Moscow plans to build 25 more prison camps in Ukraine by 2026, per AP. War analysts previously noted how Russia is prepared for a protracted war. The plan is another reflection of what war analysts have described as Russia's vision for a prolonged war after Ukrainian resistance dashed Moscow's hope for a swift victory. The think tank also added that a prolonged war is a narrative that Russia would want to push to discourage the West's support for Ukraine.

Medvedev clung on stubbornly, however, and as the fire in the Eubanks racket began to fade he took charge to reach the semi-finals at the grasscourt slam for the first time. Eubanks used his sledgehammer forehand to break the Medvedev serve to lead 3-1 in the second set -- beaming broadly and imploring the crowd for more noise. Medvedev looked bewildered and out of ideas as Eubanks kept swinging for the hills, landing blow after blow. Medvedev looked close to boiling point as he whacked a ball dangerously close to the fans, argued with umpire Damien Dumusois and received a warning. Eubanks cut a dejected figure in the deciding set as his dream faded away and the end came quickly.

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - It was billed as the battle of the 20-year-olds but Carlos Alcaraz pulled rank on his childhood buddy Holger Rune as he doused the Dane's fireworks to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time with a 7-6(3) 6-4 6-4 victory on Wednesday. The two tyros who were born six days apart were contesting a men's Wimbledon quarter-final that for the first time in the professional era featured two players aged under 21. After Alcaraz missed out on converting his first three match points, including producing a double fault on one of them, he sealed a semi-final showdown with Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev when Rune slapped a service return long. "Today there are security guarantees for Ukraine on the way to NATO," he said. "The Ukraine delegation is bringing home a significant security victory for Ukraine." Speaking earlier alongside Zelenskiy, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Ukraine was closer to the alliance than ever before, and brushed aside new warnings from Russia about the consequences of supporting Ukraine. The security assurances for Ukraine had to be "credible", he said, in order to deter Russia from future attacks. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was "potentially very dangerous" for the West to give Ukraine security guarantees.
