Roche said Thursday that its Wegovy rival weight loss drugs will be part of a suite of medicines aimed at combatting the effects of obesity. CEO Thomas Schinecker welcomed positive early stage trial results from the firm's two weight loss drug candidates as showing "best in disease potential." "We do believe we have two next generation GLP-1/GIPs that have a best in disease potential," he said of the obesity drugs. GLP-1s, or glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists, are a group of drugs used to treat diabetes and obesity. They form the basis of weight loss drugs such as Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Zepbound.

CNN —Two shots a year of a drug currently used to treat HIV infections were dramatically effective at preventing infections in a study among young women and adolescent girls in Africa. The twice-yearly injection of the drug lenacapavir can provide total protection against HIV infections, demonstrating 100% efficacy in Phase 3 trial data released by drugmaker Gilead and published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. The twice-a-year injections of lenacapavir could add another option at preventing HIV infections to the toolbox. The latest Phase 3 findings are part of Gilead’s PURPOSE program, which comprises five HIV prevention trials around the world. “While Gilead awaits additional phase 3 clinical trial data and the potential regulatory filings for HIV prevention administered twice-yearly, it is too early to state the price of lenacapavir for PrEP (prevention).

Read previewHold the butter — the rise of weight loss medications may be signaling an end to popular high-fat, low-carb diet trends. But interest has begun to wane in recent years, with the number of people on keto diets dropping by 4% in 2023. Some doctors have called keto the worst diet for healthDespite hitting its stride in the mid-2010s, the keto diet has been around for at least a century. Both saturated fat and processed meats are popular in low-carb diet variations like "dirty keto," full of junk food. GLP-1 drugs work for weight loss by mimicking various hormones that naturally occur in the human body and help regulate appetite.

Bipartisan lawmakers introduced a new bill on Tuesday that aims to crack down on the business practices of drug supply chain middlemen who are widely accused of inflating prescription medication prices and harming U.S. patients and pharmacies. The legislation aims to ensure community pharmacies can provide care to patients enrolled in federal health-care programs while being reimbursed "fairly and transparently" by so-called pharmacy benefit managers, or PBMs. Those middlemen also create lists of medications, also known as formularies, that are covered by insurance and reimburse pharmacies for prescriptions. Auchincloss said those practices have allowed PBMs to trap $300 billion in revenue in the middle of the drug supply chain between manufacturers and patients. Legislation targeting PBMs advanced through House and Senate committees with bipartisan support last year, and one proposal overwhelmingly passed the House in December.

The Biden administration, along with congressional Democrats, broadened access to health insurance by temporarily beefing up the federal premium subsidies for Affordable Care Act policies. Providing middle class tax reliefAs a senator, Harris proposed providing middle-class and working families with a refundable tax credit of up to $6,000 a year (per couple) to help keep up with living expenses. Harris also campaigned on the measure – titled the LIFT the Middle Class Act, or Livable Incomes for Families Today – during her earlier presidential run. Like Trump, Harris proposed allowing the federal government to set “a fair price” for any drug sold at a cheaper price in any economically comparable country, including Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Japan or Australia. As California’s attorney general, Harris joined other states in pursuing several drugmakers for their pricing or practices, winning multimillion-dollar settlements.

If he asks you why, simply tell him you want to keep things strictly professional and avoid more casual interactions. The pandemic accelerated the rise of telehealth, which these DTC companies are a part of both culturally and legally. Hims & Hers Health has a market cap of over $4 billion. Those at the forefront of the DTC health revolution have American guys right where they want them: insecure, on edge, and ready to open their wallets. Plenty of doctors have sounded the alarm about DTC telehealth companies, and some firms have gotten into legal trouble, too. For all the issues with DTC companies, it's fair to note that traditional healthcare settings are far from perfect.

BALTIMORE AP —When Trea Ellinger left a Baltimore drug rehab facility last summer, he assured his anxious mother that everything was fine. His mother, Lori Ellinger, questions the autopsy’s findings and wants to know why paramedics decided to use an injectable sedative. “As long as he’s not lying face down, that would be great,” one of the medics says. Four minutes later, the medics discussed getting Ellinger repositioned, but they didn’t act immediately. Ellinger was unhandcuffed and placed on his back as medics began performing chest compressions, according to the report.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday gave his take on Hims & Hers Health , a digital platform that offers telehealth services, particularly for sexual health, mental health, weight loss and skin care. Cramer suggested it might be worth starting a position in the stock now that it's pulled back some from recent highs. "While it makes sense that the stock roared on this compounded GLP-1 news, I don't love that it's now trading on what's essentially a temporary business," he said. Those great first quarter numbers didn't have any benefit from knock-off GLP-1s, and I bet the business stays strong." Hims & Hers Health did not respond immediately to request for comment.

CNN —The care that comes after a cardiac arrest should include supporting mental health — especially for women, new research has found. The team compared the data on patients’ socioeconomic status and mental health with those in the general population, according to the study. The amount of women taking anxiety or depression medications after cardiac arrest was also greater than in women in the general population, said Smits, a postdoctoral researcher at Amsterdam University Medical Center in the Netherlands. “Mental health and stress make cardiac events worse and more frequent, and we know that cardiac events make mental health worse,” he said. Around 8 in 10 people infected with West Nile virus don’t show symptoms. These symptoms can often be confused with those of other viruses, so the majority of West Nile cases are never diagnosed. CNN —GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy may help lower the risk of certain cancers, a new study suggests. About 40% of new cancer diagnoses are associated with excess weight, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The risk was cut by more than half for gallbladder cancer, meningioma, pancreatic cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma, a kind of liver cancer. It was also significantly reduced for ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, multiple myeloma, esophageal cancer, endometrial cancer and kidney cancer. And GLP-1 medications interact with systems related to insulin production.
