David Willard has been checking the grounds of Chicago's lakefront exhibition center for dead birds for 40 years. Researchers estimate hundreds of millions of birds die in window strikes in the United States each year. When they see plants or bushes through windows or reflected in them, they head for them, killing themselves in the process. Pre-dawn rain forced the birds to drop to lower altitudes, where they found the McCormick Center’s lights on, Willard said. The first buildings at McCormick Center were constructed in 1959.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday said the stock market is currently at the mercy of the bond market. Stocks can't soar, Cramer said, until bond prices go up and yield rates come down. "Until rates go down — meaning until bond prices go up in price — this cascade's going to continue. Although Cramer admitted the bond market can seem boring, he asserted this bond market is hardly that with its inverse relationship to the stock market. To Cramer, the company's stock might have soared in different market conditions but fared poorly because of a "relentless tsunami of selling."

The U.S. Federal Reserve building is pictured in Washington, March 18, 2008. That thought was echoed by Cleveland Fed chief Loretta Mester, who said: "I suspect we may well need to raise the fed funds rate once more this year." Either way, this is not the sound of a Fed who thinks the inflation battle is won. McCormick (MKC) is increasingly becoming an attractive investment opportunity, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Tuesday, as shares of the spice maker sank after a mixed before-the-bell earnings report. McCormick shares, which ended 2019 at roughly $85 apiece, traded around $68 each Tuesday. Overall, Cramer said he believes McCormick's business is doing well while acknowledging some pain points in the company's third-quarter results. The recent weakness in McCormick's stock may be tied to U.S. government bond yields reaching multiyear highs, Cramer suggested.

Matt Cardy | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesLONDON — The British pound suffered its worst month against the U.S. dollar for a year in September, and strategists show little optimism for the rest of the year, as growth expectations weaken once again. Sterling fell 3.75% against the dollar through the month, logging a decline not seen since the end of last summer. The pound also slid 1.26% against the euro last month, notching its weakest performance since December 2022. Exchange rates have been impacted over the past two years by interest rate expectations, with higher rates generally making a currency more attractive for foreign investment.

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is sinking sharply Tuesday as it focuses on the downside of a surprisingly strong job market. Stocks fell as the pressure on them cranked even higher from rising Treasury yields in the bond market. Tuesday's report on the U.S. job market could give the Fed more reason to keep rates high. They and other high-growth stocks are seen as some of the biggest victims of high interest rates. The resumption of student-loan repayments could drag on spending by U.S. households, which has been strong enough to help keep the economy out of a recession despite high interest rates.

Wall Street closed out the final week of the third quarter lower as Friday's initial rally on tame inflation data ended largely in losses. Notably, Representatives Wesley Hunt of Texas and Ken Buck of Colorado came back to Washington at Mr. McCarthy’s request to vote in his favor for speaker. And Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia aligned herself with Mr. McCarthy during the speaker fight and was ousted from the Freedom Caucus over the summer. With far-right members of his caucus in revolt over suspending the debt ceiling, Mr. McCarthy was forced to negotiate a deal with President Biden, further enraging the already volatile faction. In another blow to Mr. McCarthy, the bipartisan measure passed with more Democrats than Republicans. They did so to punish Mr. McCarthy for making a deal with Mr. Biden to suspend the debt limit.

Jim Cramer's week ahead: Focus on September jobs report

CNBC's Jim Cramer said next Friday's nonfarm payrolls — the employment data over the past month — may decide if October will see a market rally. On Tuesday, spice and flavor manufacturer McCormick will report earnings, and beverage company Molson Coors will have an analyst meeting. Cramer said the tech company is coming off the report of a great quarter and forecast, and he thinks the stock could have more room to run. Cramer again emphasized Friday's labor report, saying in order to have a "strong October," the nonfarm payrolls need to show some slack in the workforce. Cramer noted the jobs report will not come out if the government shuts down.

A government shutdown looming on the horizon could dampen sentiment to start October even as Wall Street wraps up what's been a challenging month and quarter. Many market participants expect that the financial markets and economy will broadly shake off concerns from a shutdown as they have in the past. "The market's probably going to set it aside until or unless it starts to have a larger impact on behaviors." Economic impact Historically, government shutdowns have been relatively short-lived, though they have been longer and more disruptive recently. Meanwhile, Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, expects the government shutdown is "all bark and no bite" when it comes to market reaction.

The death cross has come calling for some stocks. A death cross is a price chart pattern that forms when a stock's 50-day moving average crosses below its 200-day moving average. A handful of stocks, ranging from well-known food names to a lesser-known energy company, are close to drawing a death cross. But analysts are bullish on the stock, according to LSEG, with an average rating of buy and price target implying shares could rally more almost 20%. BlackRock also made a death cross and is similarly down more than 9% on the year.
